If i'm starting a team, and you give me a choice of Cris Carter or Tim Brown, first I chuckle to myself, then I take Carter.

Sorry Id take Thurman , Bettis , and probably Ricky Watters if I was starting a team over Martin in that time frame.
Never once thought he was an elite back. Very good yes but elite...never.
Cris carter was easily the 3rd best WR of the 90s maybe even 2nd (depending on your stance on Irvin or Sharpe). Best hands of all time , and arguably best goal line WR ever.
Set single season reception record , led the league in TD 3 times and was almost always in the top 3. Even in that clusterfuck of WRs he stood out.
He was a much better WR than Martin was a RB. CM led the league in rushing once. Only notable IMO because he was over 30 , and didnt have a single rush over 20 yards.
I like Martin but its clear Carters douchbaginess is coming into play. I dont have a problem with holding a guy back but putting in "very good" players I dont like.

Curtis Martin once dated a relative of mine. Incredibly nice guy. Once bought the flowers she took to my fathers grave. But still I dont put guys in because theyre sweeties.

It's becoming clear as the years go by just how much better the WR's of 10-20 years ago were than they are today.
Carter, Rice, Bruce, Irvin, Holt, J.Smith, Sharpe, Moss, Harrison even guys like Herman Moore, Rod Smith, that era was just loaded with top notch, multi talented WR's who had to actually work to get open against DB's who were allowed to breath on them.
I think what is happening to guys like Carter and Andre Reed, is they are being punished by the loaded era they played in. Things don't bode well for the next group of guys coming up (Bruce, Holt, J. Smith) based on this either, and it's probably not fair. It was a great time for WR talent, I don't understand why this should count against them and why they are struggling to get in.

Agree with a good deal of this, except I take Martin over The Bus every day without hesitation.
And the bolded part is not quite true. His long that season was a 25 yard TD run (so says nfl.com, espn & football reference). That's still pretty short for the rushing leader's longest run of the year, though.

This is bullshit. How does Curtis Martin get in on his second try yet Cris Carter can't get in on his fifth? Does the Hall of Fame voters just hate wide receivers? How does the most consistently above-average running back in all of the NFL get in over one of the greatest wide receivers in the NFL whom accounts for more offense than Martin?
I'm not discrediting Martin because he consistently fit the mold of what everyone wants their running back to be (3-4 yards every down running north-south), but even with that, he is not better than Cris Carter. All Cris Carter did was catch touchdowns. He had some amazing seasons and caught practically everything and all he needed was one hand. Before Randy Moss, he was the freak wide receiver of the NFL. Before Marvin Harrison, he was the best at sideline catches. He was (outside of the GOAT) the most dominant receiver of his time. If Art Monk got in over Carter because it took too long to get him in, WHY ARE WE MAKING THE SAME MISTAKE WITH SOMEONE FAR BETTER THAN HIM?

I think it's obvious that Chris Carter isn't getting in for the way he was off the field, and maybe even the way he still is now. It's unfortunate that media types hold grudges like that, but it happens.

With that said, you have to let him in based on his numbers, consistency, and longevity. 10 straight 1000 yard seasons. 7 career 1200+ seasons. At a position where the average career is 2-3 years. I don't think that should be overlooked so quickly.
