Defending champion BJ Penn is 14-5-1 and hails from Hawaii. Diego Sanchez, the challenger, is 21-2 and fights out of San Diego.
Penn hasn't lost at this weight in 8 years. The crowd seems a bit more energized after Frank Mir's quick night.
Sanchez is heading to the octagon. He looks perturbed. He makes two running circles around the octagon before starting to pace. The lights go down and the champion makes his way in to much different -- and more soothing -- music than the pounding salsa beat that accompanied Sanchez. Penn enters and focuses on Sanchez.
ROUND 1: The introductions are deafening. Penn can't wait. It's the Prodigy (Penn) vs. the Nightmare (Sanchez). We have instructions. Soon we'll have fighting. A BJ chant is everywhere, but is not longlasting. Penn takes the first offensive, knocking Sanchez down and moving in.
Now they're back to standing, with Sanchez not too much worse for wear. They paw at each other until Sanchez forces Penn back into the cage. Penn protects against the takedown. They break with missed punches on both sides out of the clinch.
Sanchez lands a high kick. Sanchez circles before stepping in, Penn is satisfied to be cautious. Less than a minute remains and neither has put his mark on the round. Penn scores late in the round but hard to see much advantage on either side. In the between-round replay, the crowd hoots at a right hand from Penn that shook Sanchez a bit.
ROUND 2: Sanchez misses wildly and goes for a double leg, but Penn blocks. Sanchez picks up Penn's left leg, looking for a takedown, then breaks with a big left uppercut that grazed the champ. So far, the second round looks like the first, with each countering the other. The BJ chant starts again.
Penn keeps attacking high, possibly to set up a knee later. Sanchez is bleeding from the right ear as the action is all standup. As the round ends, Sanchez is also bleeding from the bridge of the nose.
ROUND 3: Like several times earlier, Sanchez dives for a single leg, forcing Penn back into the cage. Penn pounds away at the side of Sanchez's ear while Sanchez keeps working the leg. Penn is unmarked. Sanchez is not. Penn continues to block Sanchez's sweep attempts.
Penn is countering well on his feet, as Sanchez charges in with both fists. Neither fighter seems ready to take a chance yet. Sanchez goes for the single leg/into the fence move again, but Penn answers with late punches at the horn.
ROUND 4: Between rounds, Sanchez's corner works on his cuts. Penn's corner just chats with him. Penn eludes Sanchez's punches and steps into short strikes. Penn seems to have an answer for Diego's moves so far. Penn's trunks are smeared with Sanchez's blood, if not his spirit.
The repetitive single-leg-into-the-cage move is annoying the crowd, which lets the fighters know.
Penn scores with a big right knee before the horn. Sanchez is a bleeding from various locations of his face.
ROUND 5: The crowd is on its feet for the final round. Sanchez needs to make something happen. They finally go to the mat with 3:35 left but quickly resume standing. A big right foot, followed by several more has Sanchez in trouble and trying to stay safe. The fight stops to check Sanchez's face, which is a mass of red and the referee stops it.
The winner by ref stoppage from cuts, including a four-inch gash on his forehead, is BJ Penn, who is lifted to the shoulders of a cornerman in celebration.
The time in the final round is 2:37 of the fifth round. The undisputed lightweight champion is still BJ Penn.
