CJ Spiller isn't exactly a typical running back. And considering Williams is retiring next year and Brown is a RFA...

An RFA with a history of Knee injuries at that. As I said, I think Brown can still produce next year, but Spiller in the Wildcat would have a lot of potential.

Yeah, I forgot he said that...I don't agree with the Goldson remark, I actually like him. But Michael Lewis has to go, and Thomas/Mays is a good fit for that spot. And yes, they're both "worth drafting" at those spots.

As far as guard...no, it doesn't look like there will be anyone available who will deserve that spot, but right tackle is also an area of concern. I'm a firm believer that a solid offensive line is the most important part of an offense. Give me an o-lineman over Golden Tate any day of the week. And I think that a tackle "worth drafting" at that spot will be available.

And at DE/OLB...this is really an area that I believe we'll draft if there's no one available in the secondary or o-line. It's low on the list of priorities, but certainly higher than wide receiver. Here's my list:

2. Secondary (Safety & Cornerback)
3. DE/OLB

I think we're just a few pieces away from being playoff contenders. But we still have weaknesses on both sides of the ball. Instead of going the Detroit route and just taking the best player on the board, let's take the best player on the board as it pertains to our team needs.

I think it'd be comparable to the AZ route when they had a great rookie in Anquan Boldin than grabbed Fitzgerald the next year. We have the luxury of two first round picks and the chance to upgrade a terrible offense. Go T or BPA at #13 and grab Tate at 16/17 or maybe even CJ Spiller. The 9ers need a return man and the ability to score on offense.

I guess we have different views of the team. I see a top 10 defense and a bottom-feeding inconsistent offense. While I do expect growth out of the young players on offense, I see exponential growth if we get another playmaker on that side of the ball.

But past the #2 you don't need great receivers! How many teams have a great, well-known #3 wideout? Teams get extra WR's deep in the draft and in free agency, NOT IN THE FIRST ROUND! Not to mention they have the best pass-catching TE in football in Vernon Davis. Now why on earth would they burn their FIRST ROUND PICK on another wideout when they don't even have a reliable quarterback to get them the ball? Come on dude, get a grip.

Wtf are you high? The seahawks would not use their first three picks on someone thats not an offensive lineman. We draft Bradford but our line is still shit and it wouldnt matter whose throwing (see Matt Stafford). I would rather us grab Berry with the 6th pick and snag a lineman with our 2nd first round pick.


Edit: I see Berry went before us so I switch that to Haden who would help our god aweful pass defense.

If our secondary was better, I'd call us a top 10 defense...as is stands right now, I'd call us top 15. And you're right, we do have a bottom-feeding inconsistent offense. Where we differ in opinion is the best way to energize that offense. I personally think our problems stem from poor offensive line play. If your runningback can't get blocking, and your quarterback can't get pass protection, I don't care who you line up at any other position, they're not doing shit. Offensive line is the most important piece of any offense IMO.

With Michael Crabtree, Josh Morgan, Vernon Davis, and Frank Gore (don't forget he led the team in receptions one season) as solid receiving threats, we would essentially be wasting a first round pick on a 5th passing option. I have no problems grabbing a wide receiver or return specialist in the 3rd-7th rounds, but not that early.

Uhh...you do know that NOBODY IN THE NFL caught more touchdown passes than Vernon Davis this year right? Christ, what more can you ask for out of a tight end? 78 receptions for 965 yards and 13 touchdowns. I don't care how many passes he dropped, he was obviously catching more than he was dropping. Dude just beasted last season, and he's only going to get better.

It all amounts to this. You don't draft a first rounder to sit third in the depth chart at ANY position. You can take a 3rd or 4th rounder to get a #3 receiver. It's not worth it when you take into effect how much playing time and throws a #3 receiver gets. And a kick returner? Why would any team address special teams with a first round pick?

So the Colts drafting Dallas Clark, Reggie Wayne, Anthony Gonzalez, Joseph Addai, Donald Brown all in the first round wasted those picks since they didn't need those guys????

Was Robert Meachem a wasted pick? He was a first round pick when the Saints already had Colston, Horn, Bush, Henderson. Was that a wasted pick?

Do you see the pattern yet? Is another example needed? Do I really have to continue to make my point? Great offenses are great because they stack the team with playmakers.

Who said anything about Tate being a #3 wr and just a special teamer? He's good enough to be a very good #2 maybe even a #1 and he could do returns.

As far as us not agreeing on the offensive line part, I don't know where you got that. I never said anything about the offensive line playing great. We need help there, and probably will address it by drafting a T wiht the 13th pick.

What you and the other guy are saying is it's a waste for a team to draft a WR in the first round. Which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Where we don't agree is the 16/17 pick. I think the 9ers are best served grabbing Tate at that spot since he would provide an immediate impact/upgrade over what we already have.

And then the VD thing. I know he's good, but he dropped a grip of passes. That doesn't discount what he did. I never said anything like that. Shit..he's probably my favorite player on the 9ers, but he's definitely not the best pass catching TE in the NFL like the other guy said. His hands are way too suspect to be considered that.

In my opinion, the 49ers need to draft the best defensive back available at either 13 or 16.

Addressing the OL at those spots would be a very smart pick as well.

the only defense we need to draft is db and there were no top prospects on the board still when it was my pick. o-line is a huge need and had a great player availible. the only other option was runningback and even if willie leaves we have logan, moore andf mendenhall. stfu and go back to plagarizing mel kiper and mcshay.

At the start of next season Casey Hampton will be 33, Aaron Smith 34, and Brett Keisel 32. Plus at the end of next season Hampton will be a free agent.

Then at MLB if for any reason James Farrior isn't in the starting lineup whether that be because of injury, retirement or whatever the Steelers rush defense will be in trouble. Lawrence Timmons isn't good against the run and who would they have to fill in for Farrior?

And yes DB is a HUGE need.

Eh, I agree more with Aso...we're damn close to being top 10, but we definitely need help in the secondary. Right now, I consider us a very good defense. If we can get help in the secondary, and our offense can start sustaining drives to give our defense more bench time, then I'll consider us an elite defense.

I have faith that our first three picks in the 2010 draft will address our needs of o-line, secondary, and maybe DE/OLB. If that happens, I'll be happy.

All the teams you've used as examples, drafted guys because they were looking to replace the aging star who's career with that team was either coming to an end, or over.

Josh Morgan, Vernon Davis, Crabtree, and Gore have been in the league no longer then 5 years. Gore being the veteran of the group. When you have a core group of talent that is still young, you don't keep drafting youth to those positions. This isn't Madden where you can get away with drafting the best receiver every year in the first round.
