Big trade late last night. Havent seen it on ESPN yet but its confirmed.

To Colorado:
C Jay McClement (1.45M - 2012) - UFA
D Erik Johnson (2.6M - 2012) - RFA
Conditional First-round pick

To St. Louis:
W Chris Stewart (2.875M - 2012) - RFA
D Kevin Shattenkirk (1.3M - 2013) - RFA
Conditional Second-round pick

The draft picks will be used in the 2011 Entry Draft unless the Blues have a top-10 selection, in which case St. Louis can opt to transfer its 2012 first-rounder instead. If that happens, the Avs will send their second-round pick to St. Louis in 2012 instead of 2011.


I feel its a decently even trade with a slight edge to the Blues. Losing Stewart hurts a lot and the Avs don't really have anyone to replace the size and scoring. Shattenkirk will be a good defender. He's replaceable though with some of the other D prospects the Avs have coming, assuming they pan out.

That said, getting a #1 big defender with #1 pick potential is awesome for the Avs. The defense was a fucking joke. If EJ can reach his ceiling, I think the trade swing hard in favor of the Avs but EJ hasn't had a great year so who knows what the future holds. McClement is a throw in but good on the PK from my understanding which is badly needed in Colorado.

I get the feeling the Avs aren't done either.

This trade deadline should tell you one thing. The draft is not a good one this year. This is the 4th or 5th first round pick to move in the last week.
 
Pretty shocking and huge trade there.

Both teams are getting good players but who have had major injury problems over the last year.

I really like Colorado getting Johnson.
 
Sad to see Johnson go, but overall it seems like a good trade for the Blues. The Blues needed a solid forward pretty badly, and Johnson could just never reach his full potential with the Blues. Maybe a change of scenery will help Johnson become the #1 defender that everyone expected him to be.
 
Looks like Oilers have given up on trading Sheldon Souray. Put on re-entry waivers today.

I think what happends here is if someone claims him they are only responsible for half his salary this and next season. His cap hit is half too i believe.

First team I think of... Habs anyone?
 
Apparently Souray's re-entry is a "work" deal, meaning someone is already waiting to pick him up. His cap hit would be $2.7M

Could be the Capitals as well. They have been rumored after Souray for some time. Not only could they use the big body, but with Mike Green struggling this season with injuries, the Caps could really use his big shot on the power play.

They don't have the cap space though well unless they moved someone.

Someone said that New Jersey of all teams put in a claim on him so we will see.

Is the $2.7 cap hit you mentioned the prorated amount or not? If Souray is due a prorated amount, then I'm sure the Caps could fit him under the cap. That makes things a lot easier for this season for any team.

I really don't know. I asked a lot of questions regarding what kind of cap hit he would of had and such last night to a lot of NHL people and the answers were all pretty vague.
 
Craig Anderson was a beast last night. The two saves on Kessel in OT were amazing. I really liked how he was directing the team in the defensive zone and would actually talk to the guys on the bench, seemed like he was playing the role of a leader which is rare in goaltenders. I hope the Sens can sign him for a few years so Lehner can stay in the AHL and develop properly.

It is not the prorated amount. His contract is $5.4M which makes $2.7M half of his salary.
 
Some Rangers scouts have been watching him in the AHL and described Souray as having 'Redden-like speed' ...
 
I think a lot has to do with it not being just a one year thing, but yet he is signed next year as well to his $5.4M contract. So it isn't like you're just picking up a loaner, you're picking up a player for another year.

A lot of teams liked the idea of Souray in the boardroom, then they dispatched scouts to watch him, killed it. 3 goals and 13pts in 26gp

Just saw a piece on ESPN Insider on him.....he's lost a lot of speed and just doesn't look like his old self out there. The Rangers have apparently lost all interest in him.

Also from Insider, the Capitals have been kicking the tires on Tim Connolly and Alex Hemsky. They would prefer Hemsky but there is a much higher cost associated with him.
