Where does 2009 UNC rank among the all-time great college teams?

Thanks for the update. I don't think anyone in this thread has said 2009 UNC would beat 1973 UCLA or 1976 Indiana. Everyone has been comparing 2009 UNC to teams that have seen play. I have no problem in ranking UCLA and Indiana above 09 UNC, but don't say "we are way off base" in our ranking of 09 UNC when teams prior to 1989 haven't even been part of the discussion.

The fact that 08 Kansas is even in this conversation is a joke. Let's keep in mind that had Memphis shot just 20% from the FT line in the last 2 minutes, Kansas wouldn't have even been national champs.

Or if Coach Cal had simply called a TO and told them to foul as soon as KU go the ball across the half court line.

on an OT note, Firsttimer, it seems like you rarely see that in basketball now...I can't count how many times, college or NBA, I see a team up 3 and they don't foul.

I know. I mentioned it last year at MM after the game and people jumped on me saying it was "cheap" I didn't know strategy was considered cheap now. I don't get it. You see it all the time in high school. But in college or the pro's nothing.

That's just a true Homer comment. Chalmers was the only amazing player on Kansas. The UNC team is deeper and just more talented. Ellington is better than anyone on Kansas.

UNC was deep this year. They were missing their best defensive player in Ginyard, Had Davis, Frasor, Drew,and if Zeller wasnt hurt, they would have came real close to going undefeated.

Sherron Collins was equal off the bench to what Ed Davis was for us and like you said, Cole Aldrich only played 8 minutes and didn't do much. That would be like me saying the 2005 team was even better cause David Noel played 3 minutes off the bench, and Reyshawn Terry and Wes Miller didn't play at all really.

In heinsight, the team looks alot better cause of what Collins and Aldrich have done this year...but who's to say that Ed Davis, Tyler Zeller, and Larry Drew III all don't become superstars now that the big guys are gone?

KU's group of big guys > UNC's bigs. UNC's guards > KU's guards.

Collins was not equal to Davis off the bench. Collins could've easily started last year, but Self wanted to go with the senior, Robinson, even though Collins is much more talented. Even though Collins didn't start, he still played quite a bit. He outscored Ty Lawson in the regional finals and had more assists.

Aldrich was a factor when he played. He helped dominate UNC inside in the regional finals last year and had 8 points, 7 boards, and 4 blocks in 17 minutes of play.

I'm not here to argue that Kansas should be in the discussion. I just don't think Carolina had the best team ever.

KU's big guys>UNC's big guys? Really? Let's play a little game..it's called "Find the lottery pick and 1st team all american." It's wicked fun, watch out though...It can be addicting.

Davis could have easily started this year as well over Deon Thompson. He was HUGE during the tournament run and great during the regular season. However, Roy has too much respect for his upperclassmen, and loves having that huge player off the bench to come in and provide energy, even if he was more talented than Thompson.

Let's not base things on that UNC game last year though, UNC played well for what...5 minutes of that game? Aldrich only played 4 minutes in the OT national championship game for a reason. Saying the Kansas team was good cause they had Aldrich off the bench is complete heinsight cause of the season he had this year.

Yes, KU's collection of big guys is better than UNC's group. They're bigger and they're more physical. They abused UNC inside last year in the Final 4.

Let's not base things on that UNC game last year...since it makes UNC's argument look bad since they're essentially the same team this year. Aldrich only played sparingly because KU had Arthur, Kaun, and Jackson. It's not hindsight. He was a Mickey D's All American. It's not like he wasn't expected to be good.

Better than the Florida teams. Not as good as Duke's. I'd say they are on par with the 2005 team. Pretty even IMO. Maybe a bit better but not by much. Itd be fun as hell to see those two teams play.

I don't know Florida's team and UNC would be a toss up...florida definitely had the edge in the frontcourt. UNC has the edge in the backcourt. Lawson though, I don't think pimple face woulda contained Lawson...

UCONN woulda been destroyed by UNC...Marcus Williams vs. Lawson? LMAO...Lawson would cross him twice, while M-Will was picking up his feet from the 1st one. Okafor woulda contained Hans but the depth UNC has frontcourt woulda took UCONN down.

UNC had no big man depth last year...this year, big man depth was one of their strengths, huge difference. The inside play was literally whatever Deon and Hansbrough could come up with, Stephenson would come in for 4 or 5 minutes a game to fumble the ball around.

This year's UNC team was much different than last years. Last year we couldn't get Ellington to hit a shot consistantly, Lawson was around 40% for that final four game, Green had 0 self control, collectively they played 0 defense and the team basically relied 100% on the way Hansbrough played. THATS why you can't base it on last years game.

I'm not saying no one expected Aldrich not to be good, but Tyler Zeller was an All American..if next year he puts up 20 and 10, does that make this 09 UNC team any better?

That's fine. UNC had room for improvement. Is this UNC team 18 points better than last year's team? They could be. You still can't say that they would wipe the floor with '08 KU.
