Why doesn't the NHL use instant replay to review illegal hits?

Simply not practical. Referee/linesman sees it or it's reviewed afterwards by Shamaban, that's the way to do it.

Thing is, killgod, wr50l, leaf, myself, and alot of the other hockey guys are not turned off by this. This is playoff hockey, it is the toughest trophy to win for a reason. You can't compare NHL playoff hockey the Olympic type hockey. Those are two different types of games, and if you are looking for Olympic hockey, you are watching the wrong games. And that is nothing against you, as many people don't enjoy the fighting and extra stuff that goes on in playoff hockey, but it has been part of the game for years. It isn't about the change. Ratings are up because hockey is getting more exposure. I would agrue the NBC deal is the reason ratings are up because people know where to find hockey now, where as when it was just versus, no one had any idea.

American's love the violence, I bet more people are watching for that then the Olympic style of play. I don't watch the games for all the bashing and shit, but I accept it is part of the playoff game, and it makes it interesting as fuck. When the team you are going for lays a solid hit on the Mfer you hate on their team, you do jump a little like you are in the crowd. I don't want to see players get hurt, and I hate the cheap shit. But nothing wrong with tough, hard playoff hockey the way it is, and the way it will always be played.

Im not turned off by this, by any of the crazy shit that goes one. Also, Im a Blackhawks fan, so im not used to seeing fights every night, or hell even overly physical play. My teams style is that of speed, puck movement and finesse. But the fact remains that shit this year seems like a bit more than usual. Why couldnt last night when Hoss was on the ground laying there somebody from and NHL office call and say "Hey Torres needs to go" Hoss was clearly fucked up and didnt return. The same thing could have been done for the Shaw hit, except when they see Smith get up, they could say he gets x minutes.

BTW Ravin, well agree to disagree about the Shaw hit. Youll bever be able to convince me his hit deserved 3 games and that he was even trying to take Smith out. I just dont believe that.

I don't care what his intent was. He tried to hit him, he didn't "try" to hit him. End of the day, he hit him lol.

And that is all that means anything when it comes down to it. Intent means shit to me in this case. He hit a defenceles player in the head, and it was a goalie. I don't care about the series, nor do I have a "team" in it. I'm just looking at it how the NHL probably would and how the broadcasters were saying. 1. hitting goalie 2. hitting defenceless player 3. hit to head.

As for 3 games, we all know Shanny is fucked, so I'm not even going to ask where he got that from.

One thing I would like to see discussed is some sort of "leveled" penalty system for illegal hits similar to what the NFL has for drug testing. So since Torres is facing a ban that is about a quarter of the season (the four games a player serves in the NFL for multiple failed tests) the next would be a season long suspension.

Here is the dumb thing though, the more the Yotes play in the playoffs the more games he gets off. If by some stupid luck Phoenix went to game seven in every series till the Cup, he could start playing next season in the season opener. The big deal about this is, he isn't missing any money right now since players are technically not paid for the playoffs, so the more Phoenix plays, the less money he wont get next season.

Though you do have to look at someone like Matt Cooke who got a huge suspension and now has turned his game around. Malkin had more penalties minutes in a period then Cooke has had all series.

After the Chicago game, Bettman was asked about all the fighting and maiming in this year's playoffs. Bettman responded by saying that this year's NHL TV ratings are the highest its ever been. No right or wrong answer here, but do you think the brutality of this year's playoffs is good for the NHL? Is it drawing in new fans?

IMO, it might draw in some people, but I think it turns off some of the long-time hockey fans, too. Too much BS, and not enough actual Olympic-type hockey.

I think you just answered your own question.

The NHL embraces the chippiness of their game, and I don't think Bettman wants to turn off his hardcore fans by (and I hate this term, but it's the go-to term for sports fans in these instances) "pussifying" his game with constant reviews. You can see the attitude of the hardcores in this thread, not that I am on either side of this, but hockey fan wants chippiness, hockey fan wants fights, hockey fan likes this stuff and sees it as part of the game.

Bettman's league isn't being sued (yet) constantly like Goodell's league, so why would he make sweeping changes that nobody wants?

Pretty easy. Olympics are about one nation vs another and when it comes to that you will find people that never cared about certain sport will watch and want to know if they will win gold.

Because as has been mentioned a bunch of times in this debate, NHL hockey and Olympic hockey are two different things. Why everyone continues to think Olympic hockey is the standard in which the game should be played is beyond me, but it isn't. And it is also no surprise that the same people who don't like fighting enjoy the Olympic hockey more.

But also, it is common sense. If you watched the Canada/USA gold medal game, they were very physical playing, and if a fight could have broken out, I guarentee those two nations would have done it. But go look at the rosters. Who was going to drop the gloves on teams that are built of entire skill players? Team Canada, the only guys I can see doing that were Iginla, and then maybe Getzlaf, Perry and MAYBE Thronton, but I doubt it. I don't remember who the American's had, but they didn't have a ton of guys who would drop them either.

Now switch this to the NHL. You do not have enough of those top of the line skill players to fill every roster spot on the team. You need those 3rd line checkers, and 4th line tough guys. They are part of a balanced team. Go look at every cup winning team and you will find a guy who drops the gloves. It doesn't happen all that often in the playoffs, but then again, those guys are not playing as much, and playoffs are all about match ups.
