Can someone point me in the direction of a definitive list of differences between the 3G and wi-fi only models? I keep hearing things like only the 3G version has GPS capabilities and that it also is the only version with the Near feature. Others say otherwise. I can't find a straight answer anywhere.

That's what I've read as well. Some think that Sony will release games that can only be played with GPS, but I think they will be few and far between. I don't see how Sony could divide their customers when they already are worried about it succeeding. Here is one example of a game that takes advantage of GPS.

They touched on it briefly in the Bombcast but I don't have an answer.

I thought it was wifi only because the 3G wouldn't be consistent enough, but I may have misunderstood.

          I'll do some Googling

and although I cancelled my order, I might order it anyway just because I want to be able to play The Show. I bought a PS3 for The Show, I can buy a Vita for the same reason. Its just that I need a new phone and I'm eligible on 3/15.. so its a cash flow thing

Yeah that file transferring on The Show is half the reason I'm buying this at release (plus of course the man crush I have on Nathan Drake <3).

I was thinking of something else, not near.

But for 'Near' . I think it will work over wifi if you can find your location

I got this from another site:

Near works, you just might have to register your location with skyhook, once they link your geo location near will work, it does however take a few days =/ Basically they are making a wifi network map that works the way a cell tower network or gps network does. I live in a condo, it had my general area but not my actual unit, so it said it couldn't find my location (lol right) so I had to submit my actual spot on the map to get it going.

Here's the link from Sony's manual regarding registering your address with skyhook to work with near: http://www.skyhookwireless.com/howitworks/submit_ap.php

For all intents though, it's going to be crap with wifi, I mean it keeps track of distance you have travelled etc, so unless everywhere you stop has a wifi location and it is already in the skyhook database, chances are you will get nothing coming up.

Seems more like a viable feature for 3g/GPS users, sadly that system wasn't even an option for Canadians, so we are stuck with this in it's current form and stuck waiting days/weeks for our self-registered location to be added to the system. No clue how well it would work beyond my home either once I'm added /shrugs

On the bright side it seems more like a gimicky social thing kinda like what the 3DS had, which worked, but I also never bothered with after the inital "oh I see" moment lol, basically not missing much if it's not working as intended at this point in time.

Giantbomb showed that you can play music over a game (muting game sdtrk).

I kind of agree. I'm pretty sure I'll open it up once and say "hey that's cool" and then never use it again.

Guy from Everyday Gamers that I follow on Twitter is telling me Near is fucking awesome. He has two Vita's 9one 3g and one wi-fi) and he only takes his 3g model out because Near is so great and it's shit on wi-fi.

what is it? is it basically dropping stuff in the real world? On a GB quick look, Gerts said you could also use Near with your friends list, so I'm guessing you wouldn't need GPS in order to do that part. I guess I'm not that big on the scavenger thing.

edit: from playstation.com: Near is the social networking app on the PS Vita that allows you to check in to real life locations and pick-up and or leave gifts for other gamers to find and use in their games. You can also locate and connect with your PlayStationŽNetwork friends and other gamers nearby. With near you can check out which games are the most popular and highest rated by fellow gamers near your location.

Through near your location can be calculated through Wi-Fi hot spots or in 3G models, with use of GPS technology which is an exclusive capability of the 3G model. Be the first to find these valuable game gifts by logging into near via 3G and not waiting to get to a WiFi hot spot.

Question is whether the person thinks $15/month is worth it for this feature, if you want it ON all the time (and not use in Wi-Fi spots).

What I'm trying to find out, and what I can't seem to get an answer about, is whether or not the GPS function still works without 3g on. So, even if I buy the 3g model but never plan to activate it, will I still be able to utilize those GPS features. If not then I'll just stick with wi-fi.

As for Near, apparently it also acts like an auto-log tupe featore, which is really cool and I'm most excited about. Picking up virtual items? I don't really care. But being able to send people on my friends list challenges of things I've completed in a game is awesome. If I hit a hole-in-one in Hot Shots and I can send that challenge to Swarley, that shit is awesome. Anybody that disagrees is lying to themselves. Not to mention being able to pull up any and all gamers in the vicinity and see what they are playing and what accomplishments they've made is cool as fuck too.
