Koontzy, otherwise known as Brian Koontz, was the athletic director at Everett. Especially during my junior year, I would spend a lot of my free time in his office, just talking about other teams in the area and sports in general. We always had a great relationship and after the argument with Rebecca, talking with a close friend would calm me down.
"Is there anyway you can come back to Everett in a week?"
"I'm listening..."
...
Pacing around in his basement, Rodney continued to wait for that call - the call that would allow him to start dishing out payback on his former client. Seconds turned to minutes, minutes to hours, and now he was lying in bed about to fall asleep when finally his phone rang.
"It's about time."
"Calm down, I had other business to take care of."
"Alright, alright. So what's the low down?"
"I was doing some research..."
"And?"
"...and I found his address out."
"Shit man, tell me now!"
"Damn, just settle for a sec. You're doing this my way, remember?"
"Yeah, of course."
"Okay, the address is 923 West Road in Everett."
"Alright. What do you want me to do?"
"I want you to give him a visit at home. I'd imagine he'd be spending a lot of time there."
"And that's it?"
"Obviously not. I don't care what you do from there. Just make sure there's no one home and you don't leave any evidence behind. I don't want the feds on your ass or mine."
"I got it sir."
"Good. Let me know how everything works out. That bitch is going to be sorry that he didn't go to Michigan."
...
"First of all, congratulations on your success this year. You made this school really proud of you."
"Our team was awful Koontzy, you know that."
"Haha yeah, but look at you. First team All-Big East as a freshman!? Pretty damn impressive."
"Thanks. So what's this about?"
"Oh yeah, I forgot. We wanted to honor you. How would you like it if we retired your number 15 from the basketball and football team on December 18th?"
Wow. That's all that I could say. I would never expect my high school to do something like that for me, and I would be honored to be first alumni to have their sports jersey number retired.
"I would love that. Would I get to make a speech before the game or something?"
"Yeah, we would like that. So that's a definite yes?"
"Of course. I'll be there."
With South Carolina out of the question, it looks like I'll be staying at Syracuse. I just hope Rodney forgets about everything that happened during freshman year and gives me another chance.
...
"Yes, can I purchase a plane ticket to Pennsylvania?"
"I don't trust you silly. How would I know where we were going?"
I looked at her and laughed. Our relationship seemed to get stronger, mainly because of the time we spent together in South Carolina. The baby was due in two months and I have been trying to spend most of my free time caring for her. Her uncle Matt worried me a little with his story about his ex-wife, but I wouldn't let that get to me. Besides with Christmas just around the corner, I finally came to the realization that I haven't gotten Melyssa anything yet.
As the GPS announced we made it to my house, I parked the car and we went inside. Melyssa took a seat on the couch as I walked upstairs to sit my bag in my room.
I opened the door and it was like reliving my high school days. On my walls were pictures of former Penn State players, a remembrance of how much I wanted to be a Nittany Lion. From there I could see my basketball and football jerseys and remember the good and bad times of my high school athletic career.
Then I looked on my table and saw the most valuable item of my playing career - the football from the State Championship. It was the proudest moment of my playing career...so far. I still had higher expectations for my collegiate career; a BCS bowl and maybe even a Heisman.
"Ethan? I didn't expect you to be home for another week."
"Well I figured I'd drop in early. How's life? Evan around?"
"Everything's going well. And yeah, Evan's on the computer downstairs."
"Alright, I'm going to go down and talk to him."
"Okay son."
Melyssa was sitting on the couch, flipping through channels as I walked into the computer room. Evan was talking to some chick on AOL as I interrupted him.
"Who's the chick?"
"Oh nobody...woah, I thought you were coming home later!"
"Nah, I decided to come back early. How was football?"
"We lost in the district title game. Zach got hurt though and our offense just fell apart."
"Well I figured that would happen if he got hurt. How'd you do?"
"I mixed between some JV and varsity. I'd say I ran for 300 yards and a few touchdowns. Not that great, I know."
"Hey, that was better than what I did my sophomore year, haha."
"Yeah, so I heard they're retiring your number tomorrow night?"
"That's one of the main reasons why I'm here right now. Koontzy called me while I was in South Carolina and let me know about the ceremony."
"Nice. We play Tussey that night so you know it's going to be packed."
"Well you better beat them. We swept those fags in every sport last year."
"It's going to be tough. They have their entire team coming back, remember?"
"Haha excuses are like assholes..."
"I know. Everyone has them and they all stink."
"Nice to see you remembered something I told you."
"Yeah I did, haha. You sticking around or are you going out?"
"I'm going to take Mel home and spend some time with her, and then I'm going to call up Brad and the gang and see if they want to catch up."
"Good deal."
"Yeah...well I'm going to head out. Later little bro."
