No, it's not at all like Paulus.

Paulus used all four years of his collegiate basketball eligibility at Duke. Athletes get five years of athletic eligibilty, but you can only play one sport for four years - unless you're like a Jason White or Jordan Shipley who get six years of eligibility cause of medical redshirts. Well Paulus used his four basketball years, but he had one year for anything else. He transferred to Syracuse for grad school - not able to be eligible to play basketball. He had that one year though to play, so that's how he's playing football.

If he was redshirted at Duke during basketball season, he would have been ineligible to play any other sport right now.

"Seton Hall!? Seton fucking Hall beat you guys!? You should be embarassed!"

Coach Boeheim was lashing out at our team after losing to Seton Hall. I didn't play very much but just like the rest of the team, I was pissed about dropping our second conference game in a row - especially to fucking Seton Hall.

"You better turn this ship around otherwise we aren't making the tournament! And I'm sure as hell not talking about the NCAA one!"

Well now I know how Coach is going to motivate us. After we all got dressed and got on the team bus, Coach stopped me just as I got to walk on.

"Hey Ethan?"

"Yeah coach?"

"Were you comfortable with your playing time the first two games?"

Honestly, I felt like I could have played more. Maybe I could be the difference between us being 1-1 or 0-2 in conference play.

"Yeah, I'm good. Why?"

"Cause I don't think I'm giving you enough PT."

Wow, Coach and I do see it the same way.

"Really?"

"Yeah. Would you be comfortable playing in a sixth man role for us against St. John's?"

Maybe this was just a ploy to get more buzz around campus, seeing that this was our first home conference game. Or maybe Coach actually feels like I can make a major difference on this team.

"Yeah, of course."

"Alright good. And one more thing."

"Yeah?"

"You have an open shot, take it. Let it fire. You've seemed hesitant to shoot in your first two appearances. Just have confidence...no one on this team is going to bitch you out for a bad shot."

I smiled. It was nice to see after only two games Coach would allow me to do my thing.

"You got it Coach."

"Good. Now get on the bus and keep quiet. We got a long ride home ahead of us."

Yeah we did...plenty of time to process my thought about the next game.

Woy's Word
The crowd erupted when we came out of the tunnel. We were on a two game losing streak...but it was the first time some of my fellow classmates got to see me play basketball and plus there were some famous commentators there.

"Watch out for the freshman guard Ethan Woy! I really believe he's got the skills to make a big impact in this game tonight. The diaper dandy has great athletism."

Well that was one way to get me fired up; Dick Vitale praising my game so far. I came out ready to give the home fans a show, if I got enough chances.

"Now checking in for the Syracuse Orange, number 15 Ethan Woy."

Right away, I wanted to make my presence known. I took the ball to the basket the first time I got it and slammed in a thunderous dunk. This got the crowd fired up and by the end of the half, I had 10 points.

However, St. John's kept my production minimal for most of the second half. We were down by five with 2:45 left when I brought the ball down the court. I passed it to Jonny then came around the baseline to get an open shot in the corner. As I let go, the Red Storm defender knocked me over and I heard a whistle.

"Woy for three...it's good and the foul! Wow, what a clutch shot by the freshman!"

I hit the foul shot and went to work after that. St. John's missed a shot and I grabbed the rebound. I quickly made my way down the court and slammed home another basket, getting the crowd even more amped up. Then St. John's came down the court and their point guard went to drive into the lane. I stepped up looking for the charge, but when he pulled up for a jump shot, I leaped up and got all of it. Andy grabbed the ball and broke down the left side of the court and I trailed right behind him. When he took a few steps inside the three-point line, he looked back and passed me the ball. With no one on me, I took a "heat check" shot, and it showed how hot I was.

Swish.

St. John's never recovered and we left the Carrier Dome with our first conference win.

Georgetown On My Mind

After defeating St. John's and getting back in the win column, we dropped a controversial game against Rutgers. Finally realizing that we needed to get our heads out of our asses, we went on a roll, winning the next four games.

However, the next week on the schedule read simply this: "Rivalry Week." The week where the nation's biggest rivalries were on center stage. The matchups like UNC/Duke and Kansas/Missouri keep the college basketball fan wanting more every minute.

Georgetown. The entire campus was buzzing about this one. With myself being a North Carolina fan in high school, I never knew how big the Syracuse/Georgetown rivalry was until I saw some of the shirts going around for the student section. I knew I would be introduced to the rivalry in a big way though.

"I'm starting?"

"Yeah Ethan, we wanted to change up the lineup a bit. You alright with that?"

"Hell yeah I'm down. I love the spotlight."

"I could tell with your headlines off the football field this year."

"Coach, I didn't mean it like that."

Coach didn't seem too happy with me, like he just found out about the near-death experience and the suspension. However, it looked like he was sticking with his gut and he would start me against Georgetown.

I slowly opened my eyes then shielded them from the light coming through the window. When I finally opened them the whole way, I looked to my right to see Delone standing there. Despite it not being football season anymore, Delone and I decided to continue to room together as he prepared for the NFL Draft.

"What up D?"

"Umm...you're not going to be too happy when you look outside."

I was still a little drowsy, but that statement woke me up fully.

"What do you mean by that?"

"Here. Look out the window."

Stepping over some dirty clothes, I completely opened up the blinds and looked to the sky.

"D, I don't see anything."

"Look down."

Looking down, I saw my car with spray paint covering it...

Stick to football you bitch, you're much less likely to get hurt playing it.

I don't think it was a player this time that did this and I quickly found out that I wasn't the only one that had their car fucked with.

"Try the entire fucking team. I guess one of their fans decided to come up to the 'Cuse early and pulled a prank."

"This same shit happened to me at my high school."

"Yeah, the fucking cornerback at my school's rival marked up my truck."

"Did you do anything about it?"

"Hell yeah I did. I posed as their AD and called into the school. I verbally bitched out that faggot over the loudspeaker later that day."

"Haha, that's fucking great man. You think we can do something similar here?"

I thought about it for a second. Surely there could be a way to fuck with them, to get them back.

"Nah. Let's just beat their asses tomorrow night."
