Empire is a network apologist it seems. I don't get how anyone can sit through shit like How I Met Your Mother or The Big Bang Theory. I boycott ABC/NBC/CBS/FOX when it's not sports-related. I just think they're level of humor is so dumbed down now, that it's not even trying.
Maybe it's just that the premium cable channels blew them all away with edgier shit, and I'm just an edgy shit kind of guy, but I haven't been able to watch a network show regularly since The OC went off the air. () I mean The Office was cool for two seasons, but got pretty stale and repetitive, and Parks and Rec is pretty hilarious in small doses, but once you realize that it's the same show as The Office, only in a different setting and with a funnier cast, it's hard to turn back. Law of diminishing marginal returns applies to both The Office and Parks and Rec.
The one good show NBC did have, Friday Night Lights, they screwed around with and eventually banished it to DirecTV's "Channel 101". Only after the show gained a huge cult following did they bring it back, again half-assed, because they re-air a show about football during the spring, when the only people who will watch are hardcore fans who have already seen the original run via streams or 101 anyway.
Basically, NBC and the other networks blow donkey dick right now and it's up to the viewer to let them know.Comment

Can't do it. Can't do either one. Call me a hater, but Donald Glover/Tracey Morgan are in the "rather shove needles up my dick than hear this guy try to be funny" category for me. And Tina Fey is in the "nobody would think she was funny if she looked like Cheri Oteri" category for me.

OC? really? hahahaha
I'll admit, the past two seasons of The Office have been subpar.
FX was/is great, but since The Shield ended, I have only watched it for Always Sunny and The League. I watched the pilot of Justified and liked it, but just didn't check it out again. The new show debuting in January about an old boxer looks alright, but I doubt I'll get into that one.
Southland is another example of your FNL example. Started on NBC and they fucked it over. Regained popularity after the fact and is now starting a new season soon on TNT. Personally, it's a decent cop show but I don't see a real overriding storyline that hooks me. As it is now, I'll catch an episode if I'm ever flipping through and it's on, but I don't go out of my way to check it out.
Nobody doubts the quality is on cable networks.

And you need to put your hate for Donald Glover aside because Community is one of the funniest shows on TV. He's much more tolerable in the show than in Derrick Comedy. He still does his dumb humor, but it doesn't fill the show. Abed, Chevy Chase and Senor Chang make the first season so god damn funny (although Senor Chang is far too over the top this season). Plus Alison Brie is so god damn hot.Comment

I still watch 30 Rock for the same reason I still watch The Office. I've devoted so much time into these shows, I cannot turn back now. It's the same reason why I watched Season 4 and 5 of Weeds. Besides, I'd pay to watch Alec Baldwin eat peanut butter, so getting to see him run circles around everyone on 30 Rock each episode for free is awesome.

O and the main reason shows on ABC/NBC/CBS aren't as good is primarily because their seasons are way too long and things tend to drag out and because they care about ratings, they have the simplest form of a storyline so you can jump in at any point in the season and not be confused.Comment
