What was supposed to be a night highlighted by his 77-yard interception return for a touchdown in his second preseason game turned into one marred by mystery. Jayron Hosley said he didn’t know how his right foot ended up in a walking boot.
It appears as though Hosley may have injured himself when he dragged the instep of his foot while high-stepping on the way into the end zone. But after the Giants’ 26-3 win over the Jets, he wasn’t sure (or he didn’t want to admit it). Head coach Tom Coughlin also said he’s in the dark, but he does know that Hosley is dealing with “a turf toe kind of issue.” “Hopefully nothing will turn up in terms of all the tests, and then it’s going to be something that is going to be very sore, there’s no doubt,” Coughlin said in a conference call today. “How he is able to deal with it will indicate how fast he can get back on the practice field.”
Hosley muffed a punt in the first preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars but bounced back big on Saturday. With 2:03 remaining in the second quarter, he was able to jump Patrick Turner’s crossing route and caught Mark Sanchez’s inaccurate throw in stride and went untouched for the score.
Whether his showboating, as he reached the end zone, is the reason for the turf toe injury remains unknown. “I don’t know when he did it. I’m not sure he does,” Coughlin said. “He had a couple of punt returns, and that play, and he only played seven plays from scrimmage. Where it occurred, as far I know, he did not clarify exactly when it happened.”
hopefully he can bounce back....hurtin himself while celebrating towards the endzone
Barden made some nice catches. It's now or never for him. Imagine how scary the offense would be if he gets his shit together, Nicks, Cruz, Hixon, Barden not to mention the rookie WRs - wow.
As of today, the Giants roster is at 88 and they need to cut down to 75 on Monday and then to 53 on Friday. (I could only get it down to 54 without finding a final cut I could make).
The biggest question I guess is with the corners. Amukamara's injury (high ankle sprain) is almost definitely forcing him to miss a few weeks of the regular season if not more. This could impact what Jerry Reese decides to do with Terrell Thomas because they figured he would not be ready to contribute until the middle of the season….BUT, he cannot be put on the PUP list. So, can they afford to carry two injured corners who won't be able to play for a month or more? They could IR Thomas
I'll go through each unit with a quick look at who could make the 53-man roster in 6 days.
2-QB - Eli Manning, David Carr.
This is the easiest group to predict since they always keep just 2 active QBs. Ryan Perrilloux will likely be sent back to the practice squad (where he was on and off all of last season).
5-RB - Ahmad Bradshaw, David Wilson, D.J. Ware, Da'Rel Scott and (FB) Henry Hynoski.
Andre Brown and Joe Martinek don't make it. Scott would've been an easy cut but he came alive in the 3rd pre-season game including a blocked punt. With his speed, hopefully they can find something for him.
6-WR - Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz, Rueben Randle, Domenik Hixon, RAMSES BARDEN, David Douglas.
Jerrel Jernigan, Talley, Stanback, Collins, and DePalma miss out.
Finally, Barden made some plays this pre-season and potentially opened some eyes. If he can build on that on Wednesday, he should earn a spot. Jernigan's role has pretty much been eliminated thanks to Douglas who has taken on the punt and kick return duties.
3-TE - Martellus Bennett, Bear Pascoe, Adrien Robinson.
Christian Hopkins, Larry Donnell and Ryan Purvis miss out. Hopkins is a good blocker but they are not losing Robinson to waivers.
9-OL - Will Beatty, Sean Locklear, James Brewer, Chris Snee, Dave Diehl, David Baas, Brandon Mosley, Kevin Boothe, Jim Cordle.
They may IR Mosley because he hasn't worked out much this pre-season with an injury and he's not ready to contribute on the field, anyway. Starting OL is Beatty/Boothe/Baas/Snee/Diehl…unless Beatty's back does not improve and then Diehl is LT and Locklear is RT.
9-DL - Jason Pierre-Paul, Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora, Marvin Austin, Rocky Bernard, Linval Joseph, Markus Kuhn, Marcus Thomas, Adrian Tracy.
Shaun Rogers, Adewale Ojomo, Dwayne Hendricks, Matt Broha, Craig Marshall and Carlton Powell miss the cut.
Tracy is battling hamstring issues and expects to play Wednesday in the pre-season finale. If the injury doesn't get better, it could open up room for Ojomo or Broha to may the team.
7-LB - Chase Blackburn, Mark Herzlich, Michael Boley, Mathias Kiwanuka, Keith Rivers, Jacquian Williams, Spencer Paysinger.
Greg Jones, Jake Muasau get cut
They have too many bodies at LB, ironically thought to be their weakest spot year in and year out. It looks like both Paysinger and Jones will not make the team so I assume they'll go with Spencer for his ST play. Jones made some plays against the Bears, but he has to be more consistent on specials.
7-CB - Corey Webster, Prince Amukamara, Jayron Hosley, Michael Coe, Terrell Thomas, Justin Tryon, Bruce Johnson.
Brandon Bing and Antwaun Molden miss the 53-man. Hopefully, Hosley can play Week 1 or else we're looking at Michael Coe starting opposite Webster. If Hosley is a question mark, they may end up IR'ing Thomas and keeping Bing or Molden.
3-S - Kenny Phillips, Antrel Rolle, Will Hill (Tyler Sash does not count on the 53-man for 4 weeks).
Missing out are Stevie Brown, Dante Hughes, JoJo Nicolas and Laron Scott
Not sure if they include a 4th safety until Sash returns or if they go ahead with just 3.
Kicker Lawrence Tynes
Punter Steve Weatherford
Long Snapper Zak DeOssie
Canty and Beckum placed on PUP, so they won't be a factor for at least the first 6 weeks.
Rookie OT Brandon Mosley to IR with an ankle injury.
They cut CB Molden, TE Purvis, DE Powell, S Horton, WR Talley, WR Collins, TE Hopkins, CB Bing, S Nicolas, FB Martinek, OT Reinders and DT Wilson to get down to 75.
My prediction for the 21 cuts (they can be at 54 counting Sash until week 5) that need to be done by Friday…
1. QB Ryan Perrilloux - back to the practice squad!
2. RB Da'Rel Scott - sucks but doesn't seem like they will drop DJ Ware, Andre Brown gets the #4 spot
3. WR David Douglas
4. WR Isaiah Stanback
5. WR Dan DePalma
6. TE Larry Donnell
7. G Selvish Capers
8. G Stephen Goodin
9. DT Shaun Rogers - IR?
10. DE Adrian Tracy - IR?
11. LB Jake Muasau
12. S Stevie Brown
13. CB Laron Scott
14. CB Dante Hughes
15. LB Greg Jones
16. CB Bruce Johnson
17. DE Craig Marshall
18. DE Matt Broha
19. DT Dwayne Hendricks
20. OT Matt McCants - IR?
21. C Chris White
It's been said by lots of insiders that Scott will make the team just for special teams while he works at RB. The RB to be cut said to be DJ Ware which if happens would be stupid for his pass blocking lame should make the team.
