Fred Davis stayed in Washington with tight ends coach Scott Wachenheim during the team's bye to work on Davis' blocking.

Davis and Wachenheim met for 2 1/2 hours last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to get the new starter's fundamentals right. Davis, an excellent pass-catcher, will be the Redskins' primary tight end with Chris Cooley out at least three more weeks. He's a TE2 heading into this week's game against Atlanta.

Redskins LB H.B. Blades has a meniscus tear in his knee and underwent arthroscopic surgery last Tuesday.

Blades has been ruled out for Week 9, but coach Jim Zorn said he could be ready for the Week 10 game against the Broncos. Blades, mainly a special teamer, has just 11 tackles on the season.

The Redskins face the toughest schedule in the league over the next four games.

After struggling to put up points against the Bucs, Rams and Lions, the Redskins' offense is about to get even worse. They'll play Atlanta, Denver, Philadelphia and Dallas the next four weeks. If you haven't already sold all of their skill players, time is about to run out. The Redskins are ranked 29th in the NFL in scoring offense

Redskins coach Jim Zorn retracted on comments made earlier in the week Wednesday, saying Antwaan Randle El will keep his punt return job.

After indicating Monday that CB DeAngelo Hall would take over, Zorn said that Randle El will still get most of the chances and Hall will only be a "change of pace" on returns. Santana Moss is the best returner on the team.

Chris Cooley admits he's "not really getting around so well" on his surgically repaired ankle, and will go for a second opinion in Monday.

Cooley wouldn't rule out missing the last nine games. "It's still really sore," Cooley conceded. "I really can't move it or set it down. I think that's what it's supposed to be, but I'll have someone who knows tell me on Monday

Chris Cooley's (ankle surgery) best-case scenario is to return for the Week 12 game against the Eagles.

We're not counting on it as even Cooley admitted concern that the team will place him on injured reserve. Cooley said he wants to come back even if the Redskins are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, which they almost certainly will be. Expect some more news Monday when Cooley goes for a second opinion.

                Redskins waived RB Quinton Ganther.

Ganther was just signed two weeks ago, but the Redskins skin need his roster spot to sign a backup punter with Hunter Smith (groin) hurting again

                  Redskins signed P Sam Paulescu.

Redskins coach Jim Zorn wants to give Hunter Smith (groin) one more week to get healthy before deciding whether to put him on injured reserve.

The Redskins demoted Malcolm Kelly from his starting flanker job in large part because of his route running.

Kelly is blaming the fact that he missed the majority of his rookie year due to a knee injury for his troubles, but the bottom line is he simply isn't a great route runner. His size (6'4/227) was expected to give Jason Campbell a red zone threat, but that hasn't come close to happening. Kelly is not even much of a prospect in dynasty leagues.

Redskins declared P Hunter Smith, DT Anthony Montgomery, CB Byron Westbrook, OL Chad Rinehart, TE Chris Cooley, FB Eddie Williams, CB Kevin Barnes, and DE Renaldo Wynn inactive for Week 9.

Stephon Heyer will start at left tackle with Fred Davis at tight end.

WOW Its been a month since Ive updated. Where are all you LOYAL FANS to pick me up while Im away.....

                        Here we go.........
Rock Cartwright has asked to go back on special teams full time after getting his starting running back job stripped.

Cartwright complained that he didn't get enough carries to get in a rythym, but the real issue is that he's not that good and is 30 years old. Quinton Ganther at least has a shred of upside at age 25. Neither one is the long-term answer for the Redskins and we're still expecting some kind of committee going forward.

Coach Jim Zorn announced Wednesday that Quinton Ganther has taken over as the Redskins' starting tailback.

Rock Cartwright will go back to returning kicks. Ganther has a highly favorable Week 14 matchup at Oakland and can be used as a flex, but there's nothing to see here long term. The former seventh-round pick and sometimes-fullback has just 28 career carries in four seasons as a pro. While Ganther needs to be grabbed in all fantasy leagues as the starter for a suddenly explosive Skins offense, he won't solve the club's long-term tailback problem.

The Redskins would face a cap hit of as much as $14.8 million if they release Clinton Portis (injured reserve, concussion) before June 1.

Portis received a $9.4 million signing bonus last offseason when he renegotiated his contract. The majority of his $7.2 million salary for next season is guaranteed, further decreasing the odds that he would be released this offseason.

Though agent Drew Rosenhaus claimed that Clinton Portis (injured reserve, concussion) will make a complete recovery for 2010, Portis was less optimistic Tuesday.

"If it's my time, I think I had a great career," said Portis, who was not cleared to play by a concussion specialist in Pittsburgh Monday. "The doctor feared that if I took another hit like that, [the vision problems] would get worse ... He said it rattled the vision and that was his main concern." Portis believes he can get back to normal with rehab, but his career is now in limbo.

Redskins placed RB Clinton Portis (concussion) on injured reserve, ending his season.

The Redskins were in no hurry to rush a declining Portis back in the lineup, and the 28-year-old admitted last week that he wouldn't play again this season unless he was fully recovered. Portis showed no explosion in the first eight games, but the limited workload may help him regain some life in his legs for next season. Though he'll likely return as the starter in 2010, the Redskins will look to the draft or free agency for a successor.
