Beat writer Jason Reid confirms that the Redskins are committed to Ladell Betts as their full-time third-down back.

It's going to be a long year for anyone drafting Clinton Portis in PPR leagues, as his catches will be way down this season. Betts is adequate in blitz pickup and a reliable receiver. He's a must-handcuff for Portis owners

Redskins RCB Carlos Rogers (calf) has resumed practicing with the team.

Rogers, entering a contract season, will start in Week 1 against the Giants. Look for him to match up often with Domenik Hixon and Mario Manningham.

Redskins coach Jim Zorn wasn't ready to announce a new starting flanker following Monday's practice.

The Washington Post has been beating the Malcolm Kelly drum, but the team hasn't confirmed it. The Skins could even lean towards Antwaan Randle El's experience, which would keep Kelly and Devin Thomas on the bench.

Jason Campbell threw to Malcolm Kelly on the first play in each of the Redskins' final three preseason games.

Kelly sounds like he's going to be the No. 2 receiver, but there's still no official word. Campbell has been raving about Kelly's progress while saying Devin Thomas has things to work on. If nothing else, Campbell has eyes for the second-year receiver's size and he'll be no the field plenty Sunday even

Rock Cartwright will be strictly a special teamer as the Redskins decided to keep Marcus Mason on the roster.

Cartwright isn't happy that the 'Skins kept four running backs. "As far as getting toyed with, I think I have," Cartwright said. "You guys have seen it. Who hasn't seen it?" The bottom line is Mason is a better back than Cartwright, and will step in if anything happens to Clinton Portis or Ladell Betts.

I agree, its time to cut times with Cartwright, would have liked to see some new blood retuning shit for us this year.

Clinton Portis was back at Redskins' practice Monday and is ready to go for Week 1.

Portis sat out the preseason finale just as a precaution for his bruised ribs. He's a full go for Sunday, although he has a tough matchup in the Meadowlands against the Giants. It will be the first time Portis isn't the 'Skins official third-down back.

Redskins coach Jim Zorn dispelled the notion that RB Marcus Mason could be a goal-line option this season.

As expected. Zorn envisions Mason as a special teamer with no assurances of being active on a weekly basis. His main offensive role is to be ready for action should both Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts suffer injuries at the same time.

Coach Jim Zorn announced Wednesday that Malcolm Kelly will open 2009 as the Redskins' starting flanker.

Kelly sealed the position over Devin Thomas, who was drafted before him in 2008, and Antwaan Randle El, who now moves into the slot. Kelly is someone to keep an eye on because of his red-zone ability, but there are still major questions about his separation skills. He only ran 4.7 coming out of Oklahoma and has had multiple knee surgeries over the last two seasons.

Antwaan Randle El will get the first crack to return punts for the Redskins.

Santana Moss and DeAngelo Hall also took punt return reps at Wednesday's practice. Randle El lost his starting receiver job to Malcolm Kelly, so at least he should be a little fresher for his special teams duty.

After Devin Thomas said returning kickoffs helps him get into the flow of the game, Jim Zorn became the latest to criticize the receiver.

Zorn doesn't think any special plays should have to be called for a guy to paly well. "He's going to kind of hold us hostage, 'Well, you didn't put me on the kickoff, so that's why I didn't play well.' That doesn't make any sense," Zorn said. Thomas clearly hasn't endeared himself to many people inside the 'Skins organization.
