If they do, that's a good move on their part because it frees them up a lot in the next couple years while their window is still open, and not the other way around like contracts in the NFL normally work. Though I thought they were crying poor with this whole off-season situation where Brees, Colston and Carl Nicks were free agents. Brees and Colston are back, and while Nicks went to TB, they got the next best option in Ben Grubbs and he did not come cheap.

Packers should just get Rodgers done ASAP, so he can become the highest paid player in the league.

40 mil guaranteed in his first year is insane.

                Rotoworld:

                7/13/2012: Signed a five-year, $100 million contract. The deal contains $40 million guaranteed -- a $37 million signing bonus and Brees' first-year base salary. 2012: $3 million, 2013: $10 million, 2014: $11 million, 2015: $19 million, 2016: $20 million, 2017: Free Agent

It means Brees will count nearly $6 million less against the salary cap than he would have under the franchise tag.
Brees' 2012 base salary is a measly $3 million, but he'll bring home a total of $40 million guaranteed. The full details of Brees' contract can be found at the link.
Is there anyone that can explain the bold to me? How will he count less against the cap if he's receiving 40 mil in ONE season?

He gets 40m upfront, but it can be spread throughout the contract.

37 million of that is a signing bonus.

The loss of 2 total players is gonna make the team suck.
