If you sort the percentage estimate, you can see that you range from around 1 percent in North Dakota, to 10 percent in Washington DC. It's a similar line of thinking when comparing the NFL and general population.

In terms of percentages, about 4% of the general population is LBGT. But then again, only about 10% are African American, which means the numbers don't mean shit when looking at the NFL. What I found odd was that the highest percentage of homosexuality was actually in the black community (4.4%) in comparison to whites (3.6%).

This has nothing to do with any acceptance of gay players. It's just how the environment is right now. I'm sure the percentage of homosexuals is higher in theater than it is in sports. The percentages of the general population are an average of everyone. Each situation is different. The NFL (and sports in general) is one of those different situations.

There are gay athletes in every major sports league. No matter how much you want the NFL to be the most macho pro sports league, at the end of the day, yes it's more macho than figure skating or gymnastics, but it's got its share of gay people.
