Is this your first SB week? Or your first experience with the NFL? Of course these are overblown stories that are bad. Were you expecting something else? Has there ever been a GOOD SB media week?

Should everyone just shut up and accept it?

There are plenty of great stories that I've heard this week, but the main ones getting all the attention are the stupid ones. The media deserves to be criticized.

Over the years I have learned that sports coverage changed from being about actual sports and into entertainment about sports figures. Sports media now just looks for the juicy stories like entertainment media does. It is probably because most of the media that covers sports aren't really sports fans.

I understand that but at the same time we need to understand that he is a football player and not somebody representing Microsoft. Does he represent the 49ers? I guess. I'm smart enough to realize that his statements don't echo the organizations.

What do you want out of this? Do you want the niners to cut him? Should he be suspended?

He's 23 years old, he said something dumb and he has apologized. I'm just tired of people talking about what Chris cullivers dumb ass said 3 days before the Super Bowl.

This whole media week is such a joke. They make these guys answer every question and when one of them speaks his mind they lynch him. Sure these guys should be smarter but the fact is they aren't. Half these guys can barely speak English properly.

He does represent the 49ers and the NFL. While we can recognize where his comments are coming from, they still fall under those businesses. If they choose to take no action, their relationships with organizations related become hypocritical. It creates a problem, no?

Why does he get special treatment for being 23 years old and a football player? He's 23, a fucking adult that should (maybe?) be educated well enough. He's openly discriminating against his co-workers and spreading hate publicly, is he not? How about you find some 23 year old salesman in your office, tell him to openly say "if there's any faggots in here, gtfo, I don't wanna work with you" and let me know how that plays out.

Oh but he's a football player, so he's just being dumb and lets brush aside his hatred cause it's no big deal. So the millions of people who have read this story, will see that "hey, open discrimination is no big deal". Just throw some cheap apology out there if anyone gives a shit about my dumb ass spouting hate.

People lose their jobs for doing things as simple as saying "my job sucks" on social media, but if you're an athlete who cares if you're being racists or a bigot, cause it's just you being dumb.

Fuck athletes having a different set of rules than everyone else. Fuck people who entitle them to this behavior and put them on a pedestal.

It is sort of hard to compare the real world to the athletic world. In my profession I have worked with a few homosexuals, but nothing was really thought of it. However, in locker rooms the culture is entirely different. Homosexuals really aren't welcome in the professional sports world and that is just the truth. If a professional athlete came out not only would their teammates have a reaction I bet the media would make it a lead story for weeks or months. It would be a very big deal. As a society if we see homosexuals as we see heterosexuals it shouldn't be a topic at all, no?

My overall point is that people are killing Culliver, but in reality as a society I don't think we are as accepting with homosexuality as we would like to think.

It's not impossible. It can happen. We, every single person, makes the choice to label someone or not. Stating it's not going to happen is simply depressing. If you're a free willed human being, you make your choice. Choices aren't permanent.

Again, to draw comparisons with racism, look at how far we've come in the past 100 years on this point. What was likely considered impossible 100 years ago, likely is possible now. We're not without problem on this topic, it still exists today, but certainly positive change has happened and much ground has been gained.

Cultures don't change overnight, especially with the amount of people involved within, but it's simply not impossible to eventually achieve or at the very least, shift the scales.

If you've personally given up on culture change, that's your call. I don't believe in that and set the example publicly that I want to set. I'll never give up doing what I think is right and hope that my actions can at least convince one person to see the error in being hateful to someone over their life choices. That's the least I feel I can do as a member of this society. I'll never accept this way of thinking that it simply is this way and nothing can be done. I think we both accept where we both stand on this.

To steer away from our personal conversation back to the thread...

In order for this culture change to move forward, gay athletes already in the league, need to be able to be open in their lifestyle without their teammates publicly stating they aren't welcome, at the very least. And again, if the culture never changed on racism and different colored skin made you inferior/without rights, Chris Culliver could very well be doing some kind of slave labour instead of being paid an extraordinary amount of money to play a game. No? Culture changed to his benefit over the years, but now he's suppressing other types of people and that's "just him being dumb" and should be brushed aside? I just think it's a bit much to not take it seriously if there's a desire, from the league, to have an impact on this topic.

Also, if players have issues with gays in the locker room, well right now a culture exists where they CANNOT come forward so you basically have "undercover gays". If you simply cannot be in the same locker room as a homosexual, then you're not going to find out who they are by doing what Culliver is doing. So good job on that front.
