Yes but No!: Bills Win but Lose Edwards, Owens

AP Miami – The Buffalo Bills defeated the Miami Dolphins 32-19 in what was a much closer game then the final score indicates. While this divisional victory vaults the Bills into second place in the hotly contested AFC East, it may have come at too high a cost. Late in the third quarter, Bills star WR Terrell Owens had to be hauled off the field by the training cart after receiving a vicious hit along the sidelines. The injury was later diagnosed as an abdominal tear, which will keep Owens out of at least the next two weeks. Only moments later, QB Trent Edwards was crushed in the backfield when Dolphins OLB Jason Taylor got a free release due to a missed blocking assignment. His face was smashed into the turf and he was diagnosed with what appears to be a broken jaw. The training staff’s best estimates have him missing at least 2-3 weeks.

Miami got on the board first in this one as the Bills defense struggled to defend the Wildcat offense. Dolphins HB Ricky Williams took an option handoff from fellow HB Ronnie Brown 4 yards for the score late in the first quarter to give the Dolphins a 10-3 lead. However, the Bills would fight back, carried along by the return of pro bowl HB Marshawn Lynch. Lynch would finish the day with 111 all purpose yards and a score.

It’s time for him to step up and be a leader on this team and I have the utmost confidence that he will do that. The Bills would break the tie in the third quarter when Edwards found Owens wide open for a 62 yard score. After the injuries to Owens and Edwards, the offense began to rely heavily on their running game as Marshawn Lynch carried the load. Early in to the 4th quarter Bills HB Dominic Rhodes was about to go in for the score to seal the game when he was stripped of the football and Miami CB Jared Allen scooped it up on his own three yard line. In perhaps one of the dumbest moves ever seen on a football field, Allen reversed direction in an attempt to gain more yardage and ended up being forced out of his own end zone by pursuing Bills players. The safety would pretty much put the nail in the Dolphins coffin as Bills backup QB Ryan Fitzpatrick was able to find WR Lee Evans for the score on the ensuing possession.

Prediction:
The Bills are badly banged up coming into this one and it makes this matchup more intriguing. With several key starters missing from the lineup these teams look to be evenly matched on paper. Brady Quinn has asserted himself as the starter for the Browns but a true number one receiver has yet to step forward for Cleveland. On the other side of the ball, Fitzpatrick will get his first start for the Bills. Look for the Bills to let Lynch carry most of the offensive load as they did late in the Miami game. I think the Browns may do the same and the Bills front seven should expect to see Jamal Lewis early and often. Even with the injuries, I think the Buffalo organization is leaps and bounds ahead of Cleveland. Buffalo puts together their first winning streak after knocking off the Browns 24-14.

Bills Hold on to Edge Browns 34-27

AP Buffalo- The Bills found their first winning streak of the season as they hung on for a seven point victory against the Cleveland Browns 34-27. Cleveland would score first midway through the first quarter when K Phil Dawson knocked through a 51 yd field goal. Buffalo blew this game wide open though scoring 24 points in the second quarter on their way to 24-10 halftime lead. The scoring started when HB Marshawn Lynch broke through on a 30 yard run for the score. On the ensuing Browns possession, QB Brady Quinn got caught staring down his receiver and Bills OLB Keith Ellison easily made the interception and returned it 35 yards for the score.

Both offenses would sputter in the second half, as both quarterbacks threw picks and had a difficult time moving the ball. The Bills defensive line came to life recording four sacks. Rookie first round pick DE Aaron Maybin recorded the first sack of his NFL career. Cleveland showed signs of life in the 4th quarter when Bills HB Dominic Rhodes lost control of the ball and Browns MLB D’Qwell Jackson returned the loose ball 49 yards for the score. This marks the second time in two straight games that Rhodes has coughed up the ball while trying to run out the clock.

“Dominic needs to hang on to that ball. When games are this close, any turnover can be costly. We are just lucky this one didn’t comeback to bite us.” – Head Coach Dick Jauron

However, the Bills would be able to run out most the clock on the following possession and punctuated it with a 4 yard touchdown run from HB Rudi Johnson. The Bills would hang on for the one score win. Cleveland will head to take on division rival Pittsburgh (5-0) while the Bills will travel to the Meadowlands to take on the New York Jets (1-4). The Jets won their first game of the season last week after thrashing the Miami Dolphins by the score of 46-14.

Game of the Week
A shootout in Arizona saw the Arizona Cardinals barely edge the Houston Texans by a score of 38-37. Cardinals HB Tim Hightower ran for 149 yards and a score on just ten carries. For the Texans, QB Matt Schaub had a near perfect day, throwing for 324 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. The Cardinals needed the win to keep pace with the division leading Rams.

Prediction:
The story-line of this game of this game is undoubtedly the play of Jets rookie QB Mark Sanchez. Sanchez had the best game of his young career last week against a helpless Miami squad in which he racked up over 300 yards and 6 TD's. Recently acquired WR Braylon Edwards is having a career year. On the defensive side of the ball, CB Darrelle Revis is one of the best in the business and should take Bills WR Lee Evans completely out of this game. Despite the records on paper, this game looks to be a little bit of a mismatch as many analysts are picking the Jets for their upset special of the week. I will also jump on that bandwagon, but I think this one will be closer than most people think. Sanchez leads the Jets past the Bills 31-28.

AP New York- The New York Jets were in complete control today, knocking off the Buffalo Bills by a score of 34-19. Buffalo Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick had an absolutely terrible day, missing wide open receivers and throwing three interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns. The Bills offense struggled to find any consistency on the day. Almost all of Fitzpatrick’s passing yards came off of screen plays to HB Marshawn Lynch. Lynch looked as if he were trying to carry the entire team out there, making defenders miss right and left. But even his heroic effort of 232 all-purpose yards was not enough to jump start this Bills team.

The Bills defense appeared frustrated as they continually had their backs against the wall. Fitzpatrick’s day hit rock bottom when DE Shaun Ellis who was dropping back into coverage picked him off. Jets MLB Bart Scott and CB Darrelle Revis both had interceptions returned for touchdowns. Jets rookie QB Mark Sanchez had another solid outing racking up over 300 yards. Jets WR Braylon Edwards continues to develop nicely for the team and has established himself as the number one receiver. The Jets will head to Oakland to take on the Raiders (0-6) who are still looking for their first win, while the Bills will travel to Carolina to play the Panthers (4-1) who are looking to keep pace with the Saints in the NFC South race.

Prediction:
Even with the very shaky play of QB Jake Delhomme, the Panthers have found their way to a 4-1 record, and among the ranks of the elite teams of the NFC. A large part of this is due to their two headed monster at halfback in Deangelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. The defense has been stout led by MLB Jon Beason. The Bills offense should do better with the return of QB Trent Edwards and WR Terrell Owens but it won't be enough against this star studded Carolina defense. Carolina has all the momentum heading into this one as Buffalo is coming off a deflating loss to the Jets. Carolina continues their winning streak knocking off the Bills 31-17.

Yeah , the pass defense has just been terrible all season. It will definitely be an area to build come offseason. Hopefully we can do okay against a struggling Jake Delhomme.

Yeah we'll need all the help we can get especially if delhomme gets a hot hand. I might have to slide a safety over to help with Smith so he doesn't beat us deep.

This is true, the offense has been inconsistent at best. I haven't even decided if I have my franchise QB in place. One of the questions that needs answering this offseason...I'm hoping we can pull it together this season though. If the pass defense can hold it together and we can find a little more in the passing game we have a chance

Last Second Score Lifts Panthers Over Bills 27-24

AP Charlotte- The Carolina Panthers scored with just 24 seconds remaining in the game to defeat the Buffalo Bills 27-24. The game was back and forth the entire way as the teams appeared to be very evenly matched. Carolina’s dominant run game was held in check for the most part by the Bills defense. Carolina would get on the board first when PK John Kasay knocked through a 56 yard field goal in the first quarter. Carolina led at the end of the first quarter 10-7 after each team ran in a rushing score. The second quarter saw each defense tighten up as both offenses came to a grinding halt until the final minutes of the half. Carolina QB Jake Delhomme found WR Steve Smith all alone in the corner of the endzone to take a 17-10 lead. However, Buffalo would respond as WR Lee Evans beat CB Richard Marshall deep for a 34 yard score just before halftime.

The Bills took a 24-20 lead late in the third quarter when HB Dominic Rhodes scored his second rushing touchdown of the day. The Bills defense continued to hold tight through the 4th quarter as the offense stalled. However, Delhomme would drive the Panthers down to the one yard line late in the fourth quarter. On 4th and goal from the six yard line, Delhomme found backup TE Gary Barnidge, who lept over CB Leodis McKevlin for the go ahead score with just 24 seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession Bills QB Trent Edwards threw a duck that was picked off by FS Charles Godfrey to end the game. The Bills will go back home to take on the Houston Texans (2-5) while Carolina will head to Arizona to take on the Cardinals (4-2).

Yeah the Jets game was painful. Fitzpatrick just played terribly. The Carolina game really hurt too. I really thought we had them for a second and then on 4th and goal...hopefully we can get back on track against the Texans. The Patriots keep losing too, surprisingly, so we are still in position to contend for a playoff spot.

You're absolutely right. It seems like the team in general cannot find any consistency. One week the defense will show up but not the offense and then the next week the opposite. Our biggest problem on offense has been quarterback play, the running game so far has usually done its part. Trent Edwards is great one week and then can't hit wide open receivers to save his life the next.
