I think Smoltz was talking about the mentality of closers, and how putting them into a non-save situation is asking for a let down because they don't have the adrenaline they are used to.

I think the closer role is some BS personally, but essentially all teams have that guy and Smoltz would know the mentality for sure. I would have put Hunter in the game, especially given his recent dominance.

Be a professional. Pitch the baseball over the plate regardless of "save situation". The closer role mentality is almost a self-fulfilling prophecy...it doesn't really exist.
 
Random observation based on watching Jeter misplay a couple of balls during last night’s game and, for that matter, watching two decades of Yankees playoff games: Jeter could drive his car through a crowded school playground, mowing down three score students with multiple fatalities, and whoever is covering the story would talk about how, normally, he’s such a great driver. They’d then describe the tragedy in the passive voice with terms like “the car just went into the kids near the swing set, there. Tough break for Jeter, who normally does not commit multiple acts of vehicular homicide.”

He's doing great as a reliever. With the exception of the second half of 2010, he hasn't put it together as a starter. Depending on who is brought back or added to the bullpen, I would imagine the team gives him one last shot as a starter next year.

He's not having a good series. They were also posting RISP numbers in regards to the post-season, and both he and Swisher are beyond horrid.

I believe they said on TV it was more than Oklahoma City's basketball arena, which is enclosed. One of my co-workers was there, said it was absolutely nuts times two.

And as Smoltz said, that sinker is going in on a left-hander. I would have tried my best to keep it on the outside part of the plate. Johnson just served that one up on a platter.
 
Girardi is a great manager and that was a good/ballsy move to pinch hit for Rodriguez. Jim Johnson is still a stellar closer, in my mind. Unfortunate that he has had some struggles in this series.
