According to CBS' Jason La Canfora, the 49ers have "expressed to others" that an Alex Smith trade is "effectively complete."

Any potential deal cannot be finalized until the new league year begins on March 12. La Canfora does not know the acquiring team, but lists the Chiefs and Jaguars as "two teams that make sense." Both NFL.com and Yahoo Sports have reported in the past three days that the Chiefs were Smith's most dogged pursuer. Although his arm limitations were as evident as ever last season, Smith would be an acceptable stop-gap option in Andy Reid's West Coast offense. Smith isn't expected to fetch more than a mid-round pick.

I would love to see how well Smith would do in an Andy Reid offense and without Jim Harbaugh.

If its with teh Chiefs its probably a 4th which is essentially a 3rd rounder. Not a bad deal if that ends up being the case.

I'd be surprised if it was worth much more than this.. basically the 49ers would release Alex if no one trades for him, teams aren't going to bid against themselves.. but for a lower round pick they could at least secure him.

But yeah - he's not going to fetch a 2nd rounder or something. Though if he did that'd be kind of cool since it'd help Matt Flynn's stock.
 
The 49ers and Chiefs have completed a trade for Alex Smith.

Four years after trading for the Patriots' backup quarterback, the Chiefs have swung a deal for the man who lost his job to Colin Kaepernick. New coach Andy Reid has paid a pretty penny for his starting quarterback as the Chiefs will reportedly send a second-round pick to the Niners in this April's draft and a "similar" pick in the 2014 draft. It's the same kind of price that the Cardinals paid for Kevin Kolb in 2011 and the Chiefs paid for Matt Cassel in 2009. Smith is certainly an upgrade on Cassel, but has proven to be incapable of anything more than game managing for the Niners. Under Reid's pass-happy West Coast scheme, he'll be asked to do a lot more. The deal won't be official until the new league year opens on March 12.

A 2nd round pick? I thought common thought was that the 49ers were going to have to release him anyway? It says a lot about what Reid thinks about Foles, who probably would have come at a cheaper price. I don't trust Alex Smith, but I do trust Reid with QB's so he should be able to maintain his success. However, Reid does like to throw the ball like 40+ times a game, so it will be interesting to see if Smith can hold up.
 
Reminds me of how the Bengals were able to ship Carson away for two great draft picks for a player they didn't intend to use.

It amazes me how these often teams get trade raped in deals for qbs.
