BCS discussing wide range of possible modifications

BCS executive director Bill Hancock joined the show to talk about the state of college football.

Hancock said in recent meetings they’ve discussed many things. The stories that have leaked out about modifying the postseason have been two out of 50 ideas they’ve proposed.

“Anything you can think of has and will be discussed,” Hancock said. “That’s from the spectrum of going back to the old bowl system, that’s been in the press. All the way to a 16-team playoff, that’s also been in the press.”

Hancock said the conversation about changes will go on for six to eight months, and there should be something to vote on by next summer.

I suggest listening to the interview. I cant find the text, but thought it was worth posting. There may be hope yet....well maybe.

I would love to see the top 4 conference champions go into a playoff. That would make the regular season important by having to win your division and conference championship game, but still give incentive to playing a tough schedule OOC because you have to be in the top 4 conference champions. Also, it would allow for teams like Houston or Boise a shot to get in over a 2nd or 3rd team from a single conference who couldn't win their division.

Then the task would be picking the best 4 teams out of 11. In reality it'd be even less than 11 since some conferences aren't gonna produce a worthy team. Would have to figure out what to do with independents too.

Meh. It's always been a crock when a team that doesn't win it's conference gets in...ie Oklahoma years ago. You have to find a way to thin the herd objectively because there are so many schools playing so few games with so few cross over matchups. Conference champs helps to do that and also helps to prevent a hugely controversial issue from arising.

I really don't agree with the having to win your conference championship to play for a NC ideology. IMO this is an antiquated way of thinking. College Football is the only sport that does this.

However, I understand the rationale, because it also helps keep the regular season relevant, as it preserves the signifance of each game. However, given what has happened this year (LSU, Alabama, Arkansas all being in the same conference and division) it would make for some of the same issues we have today. I say just take the top 8 ranked teams, throw the balls out and let them play for the NC.....forget about all of these arbitraty rules rooted in tradition.......keep it simple.

I also agree you should win your conference. Its the only way to sift through the 120 teams out there. All conferences should have a title game, and each conf title game would be like a playoff game, so all teams would get a fair shot.

Id prefer a 6 team playoff with the top 2 getting byes, but 4 team playoff is good start.

Not really. The issue we have today IMO is that the system is too subjective. People want something more objective that isn't so dependent on polling and is based more on the on the field results and letting the players decide. Will it suck for 2 of those 3 SEC teams? Sure. But at least at the end of it we can say "Hey, they should have taken care of their business on the field and each team controlled it's own destiny" rather than "Welp, that's the way the voting goes".

Potentially, and that's why many conferences will not be for it and wouldn't agree to it.

I really don't care about watching the MAC conference champion get pummeled against LSU. I want to see the top 4 or 8 teams in the country go at it.

Having said all of this with all of the conference realignment college football is going to 4 major conferences and the conference champion will represent their respective conference in a “playoff system”. I guess I can live with that, but it still wouldn’t be an accurate representation of the top 4 teams in the country.

Take the top 8 teams, compromise with the BCS and use their rankings as the seeding. I'd much rather have a big debate over last team in, the teams getting snubbed for the title game.
