no shayne right that how typical Barry games were. I watched alot of them just to see the big run.

No it's not? I've seen Barry play. He may have led the league in negative yardage runs a lot of times but he may have led it by around 200 yards which averages out to 10-15 negative yards a game.

From what shayn posted thats 24 yards lost on 7 carries. On that pace he might lose a solid 75 yards a game... That is not what a typical Barry Sanders game looks like. He might have a few more runs for a loss than the usual back and a few more short runs. But he most certainly does not lose that much yards. I think in this thread how much yards Barry loses has blown up.

I've only seen Jim Brown play on NFL Films and ESPN Classic. But from what I have seen, a definite beast, but all he is doing is running through slow white men who worked in factorys during the off-season.

GOAT to me = being able to plug into any generation and still be great. Johnny U today would have 4000 yards a season, LT would be a beast off the edge, Prime would be a shutdown corner. But Jim Brown would be T.J. Duckett.

I think Walter would have what it takes to be great now, I think Barry and Emmit would too, but I just think Walter is better.

For the record I voted Walter Payton. I just don't tolerate the incredibly stupid assumption that a typical game for Barry, he loses 24 yards every 8 carries he gets (when you add the negative runs together). It doesn't even make sense when you go over everything mathematically.

of course not. But understand this, Barry wasn't going to run through a hole for a 2 yard gain, he was going to cut back, reverse field, spin away, do whatever he had to do to find a hole that would gain him 8 yards...THIS was the biggest reason he lost so many yards, not his o-line.

I was basically talking about the 1997 game vs the Bucs, when Barry had 5 rushing yards late in the 2nd quarter before he busted off an 82 yard TD, then another 80 yard TD in the 4th, but ended the game with 215 yards. Which means he ran for just 2.9 ypc all game, save for the two 80 yarders. So the point is you couldn't lean on Barry. He wasn't going to pound the rock and seal victories for you. He wasn't going to churn out first downs and keep your drive alive. He was more apt to shoot your team in the foot on first down by running around and taking a 6 yard loss, and puting you in a hole. That's the biggest problem with Barry. For as great as he was, and he was great I'll admit, he was consistently killing drives and for this I can't accept him as a truly complete running back, let alone the GOAT.

I'm no advocating Barry Sanders at all. I think some of it did have to do with Wayne Fontes offensive philosophy though. When you are already in a pass first offense and a lot of your runs come from draws as it is, your offensive line's strength is obviously not gonna be short yardage or clock killing running.

As far as the loss of yards I think a lot of it was from teams expecting these draws. Because of this thread I just watched 1996: Chiefs vs Lions from Thanksgiving. At one point they put a graphic on screen and it showed this:

13 of 19 runs went for 3 yards or less.
6 of these 13 went for minus yards.

His longest run was 41 yards and he finished the game with 20 carries for 77 yards and a td. This was a game worse than his usual played against a pretty good Kansas City Chiefs defense.

Barry.. The guy could do things on the football field that nobody else has come close to doing. If he was in the NFL today playing for a team like the Saints running those draws and shit, he would probably average 150 ypg..
