Ok, you're missing the point. I'll try not to make this long and drawn out.

It didn't matter who was on a worse offense. The fact that the offenses they played in were not equal is not the point.

As great as Pastorini was :nope: he wasn't somebody you had to worry about. Week after week the only problem defenses needed to worry about when facing Eric/Earl/Walter, was to stack the box and shut down the run. Because they were the only great players on their respective offenses. The Oilers/Rams/Colts were not very good outside of Earl/Eric. Period. This is fact, and so they saw a shit load of stacked defenses.

 

Now you're just being dumb. Ok, how about this:

14 in completion %
15 in Y/A
10 in TD %
12 in INT %
1 in Sack % (he avoided sacks/got rid of the ball quicker than any other QB)
He had 6 4QC/GW drives in that year alone

Again, he wasn't that bad at all. He wasn't a great QB but he had a pretty good year in 78 and he made the plays more often than not, when they needed to be made. He had 2 4QC and 4 GW drives in 79.

Would Pastorini scare you enough to prevent you from stacking the box against an Earl Campbell? :nope:

This thread inspired me to watch a bit more film of the backs since I wasn't around to see any of them play. Nothing like watching Payton run the ball IMO

As far as Payton and Campbell go I don't think it would've mattered who the QB was, the majority of the time, with how much they ran. I'd say defenses backed off maybe some of the time for Pastorini but never for the Bears. I know the Oilers still ran a crazy amount even with Pastorini. Bears didn't have as good a QB so they had to run the same amount. Dickerson was in a little more balanced of an offense.

This would account for a very tight margin of difference. An almost insignificant amount to matter in this discussion. The point is, on running downs, the box was stacked, you can bet your bottom dollar on that. Yet Earl and Eric outran Payton. Again, Payton did not dominate the field as Jim Brown did. There were no other RB's that came close to Jim Brown before, during, and for a long time after. The same can not be said about any other running back. That's the original point.

I hate to take anything away from Jim Brown. There were very few athletes that dominated their sport like Brown did during their era. But I don't think some of the advantages he had over the modern player should be ignored either.

First off, the travel schedule. Jim Brown only played three games his entire career on the west coast.

The yardage he put up in a 14 game season is tremendous. But a 14 game season also lightens his workload. He only had 1 year with 300 or more carries. Payton had 10. (FWIW, they both averaged about 20 carries a game, with Payton leading by percentage points). He also played in 5 more playoff games.

Speaking of playoffs, looking at Brown's playoff numbers they were very pedestrian. In 4 career playoff games Brown averaged 60 yards a game, had 1 100 yard game, and only scored 1 rushing TD. Emmit Smith averaged 93 yards a game with 19 TD's.

I like that you have Earl Campbell up there. He was a BEAST. I never seen anyone with the combo of his power and speed.

I agree with Jim Brown at the top, but I have both he and Walter Payton sharing the top.

I don't know how T. Davis got in this poll.

Emmit Smith doesn't belong in the convo. Glad you didn't have him listed. He was a great back, but not anywhere near GOAT.

I can't vote in the Poll cause I have two at the top. Walter Payton just did EVERYTHING extremely well. Ran with power, ran with finesse, blocked, picked up blitzes, good receiver, and could throw the ball (better than Tim Tebow - just for you Glenn). There was nothing at RB that Payton didn't excel at. Name one RB talent that Payton was average at. Just one.

How old are you? Payton's teams were better? Maybe in the mid 80's, for a span of two years, but up until that point, no. Sanders was on a good to very good offense. Herman Moore and Perrimen.

And they had some really good players on defense. Like Robert Porcher, Bennie Blades, and Chris Spielman. And this is me trying to remember back 20 years ago. Anybody have other Lions players of that time that were pretty good?

Dude, I lived through the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 2000's, 2010's. Lions didn't have a great O-Line, but they were not a shit team. Payton was TONS better than Barry. Barry was a greater pure runner than Smith.

Favre is close to GOAT regular season, but Rodgers looks like he will actually be a better QB. How lucky are we in GB? - Just thought I'd throw that in.

I can tell you don't research league history much and that you didn't see Payton play just by your posts. By the way, because you have such a limited scope, your posts do sound pretty stupid.
