I don't know what the deal is now. I go to set up the connection on my wife's 360 and PS3 and they won't connect. The 360 just won't connect and doesn't really tell you what the problem is (I hate the way they updated that, so much better when the 360 first released) and the PS3 says the WPA passcode is wrong. I triple checked and I'm typing everything is accurately so I have no idea wtf the problem is.

Then I had downstairs to make sure my console still connect. They do, but they seem slow. The 360 seemed to take much longer to sign into Live and the avatars next to my PS3 friends took forever to load.

Leaf, I need your help again man.

And...it happened again.

I had been playing Gears 3 since about 10pm, so about 5-6 hours. Our four player party decides to call it a night. We had just finished all 12 waves of Beast mode when everyone else in the party shows exiting. Then it won't let me quit matchmaking. Then it boots back to the games main menu and says "No longer able to connect with part" with a loading thing in the bottom right. Unlike last time, I can't exit to the dashboard. The console is unresponsive. I can't bring up the guide, turn off the console. Nothing. Then I try to turn off the console by the power button and it still won't turn off. I finally try ejecting the disc and the console finally powers up.

Of course when I turn on my PS3 I can't sign into PSN. I turn the 360 back on and, yup, same thing. I can't sign into Live.

What the fuck is going on and why does this only seem to happen when playing Gears online?

It disconnected again today and had nothing to do with gaming. I was just watching football and fucking around on my netbook. Then I happen to notice that the netbook lost connection.

I went back into the router settings. I did change one thing although I have no idea if it matters. I noticed in the wireless setting it had defaulted to "Up to 154 mbps". My connection is no where near that so I switched it to the lowest which is "Up to 54mbps".

You got some wierd dropping going on. I find it hard to believe that router is starting to kick the bucket already but who knows.

If I go the new router route, pardon the pun, is there any brand you guys recommend out of the basics?

Linksys?
Belkin?
Netgear?
Asus?

I had two Linksys before this one and they were both solid. They last me about four or five years each. If this one is cooked I'm thinking going Netgear again would be a bad idea.

Give the ASUS RT-N56U a try if you go for a different router. The Netgear stuff is usually top shelf though so you wouldn't be looking for trouble if you got one of their current models that is highly rated like the N600.

Last night my Live randomly disconnected twice while playing SotD. My netbook stayed connected the entire time though. I don't know if it was just coincidence or what.

Honestly at this point just go out and get a new router and set it up. If nothing happens and all works fine problem solved. If it does keep happening thats why god invented the return policy.

Theres a laundry list of reasons things could be dropping out this has been going on for awhile now so try and eliminate the easiest culprit.

Ive had some wonky things happen with routers. Cordless Phones , weird firewall settings , lightning strike that screwed up the internals and had it resetting every hour , a new wireless device I was unaware of that cause all kinds of ruckus , someone mooching off the network etc...
New router 20 min setup hours of gameplay should give you your answer.

Yeah, that's what I want to do. I actually went to Best Buy yesterday intent on buying one. But I wanted that ASUS one and apparently it isn't available in stores, only online.

Plus I have this 12% coupon that I would like to use that expires in a few days but it's in store only, meaning I can't use it on the ASUS. So my options are order teh ASUS for $130 and if it doesn't work, just return it, or buy something else from the actual store and use teh coupon an dstill be able to return it if it doesn't work.

So PP is saying Linksys, Mr Bill says go with the ASUS. JMS says the Apple Airport but I think I'll pass on that. Any other suggestions? Also, keep in mind that hopefully I can get this shit hard wired soon. My cousin is pretty tech savvy and is supposed to be coming up to my house soon to get things straight.

I've never had any problems with the 2 Linksys ones I've had.

Now that you mention it, neither have I. Like I said before, I had two previously and they both lasted about 4-5 years. The only issues I had with them is their customer support. Even back then it was all outsourced to India and I couldn't stand calling those clowns.

Maybe I'll just look into the top of the line Linksys Best Buy has.

Well twigg...i bought the 4200 and the range sucked for me. I was getting a weak signal 25 feet away. I returned and tried another and they both sucked. I got random drops on my xbox that is wireless with it as well. But WTH try one, u can always return it. I went through 3 diff routers before I got the airport. For some dumb reason it works perfectly.

Just saying thats probably because the routers were probably on a certain wireless channel which was probably being interferred by things like cordless phones and such. The airport uses a a higher channel from what I noticed.
