ZB you realize the reason why there is so much weight put into the AP poll is because there is no actual national championship award for college football. There's the BCS, and as far as I can tell (please correct me if I am wrong) they are a seperate entity from the NCAA. From the BCS website:

No where does it say anything about crowning a national champion, simply to ensure a macthup between 1 vs 2. The Coaches Poll is obligated to crown the BCS winner it's champion, but it's still an independent poll just like the AP.

The reason I bring this up is because if college football were to institute a playoff system, whether 4,8, 12 or 16 teams, this would obviously blow up the current BCS format and force the NCAA to officially crown a national champion, making the final AP poll as meaningless as CBB.

FYI the AP does release a final AP poll for CBB. Last year they had UConn and Butler 1 and 2. UConn got 30 out of 31 votes, with 1 moron voting Ohio State number 1.

If there is any championship officially awarded by the NCAA, then there is zero disagreement over who the champion is...it would be like CBB and every other college sport.

But if the BCS is expanded to a plus-1 model or 4-team model (as has been rumored lately)...then we would be in the same situation we are in now.

Using the BCS formula to rank teams is not the same as the BCS picking the teams.

I didn't think this even needed explaining, but I guess it does. Once the national title game participants are decided, the BCS bowls get to choose whom they want from the remaining batch of BCS-eligible teams. Thats why we get bogus matchups like TCU playing Boise, or an undefeated Utah team playing a 7-5 Pitt team, or an 8-4 Notre Dame weaseling their way in to the Fiesta Bowl because they draw better than an 11-1 Southern Miss team.

1. Under the BCS a four loss ND team has never made a BCS bowl. Plus ND needs 9 wins to qualify.

2. Notre Dame made a Fiesta Bowl back in 1994 at 6-4-1.
