What are you talking about? It does in fact make the Heyward-Bey pick much more defensible. When you draft a player you are not just looking at his on the field accomplishments, you also want to check into his background and personality so you know exactly what type of player you are getting.

Crabtree is a prima donna and an egotistical maniac. The Raiders were turned off by his personality when they met him and he is already becoming a headache for the 49ers organization and he hasn't even played 1 fucking game yet. The last thing the Oakland Raiders need is a guy like this on their team.

The Raiders are the laughing stock of the league and have already made enough mistakes this decade, picking Crabtree over Heyward-Bey would have been an even bigger mistake because Crabtree would have undoubtedly started mouthing off as soon as the Raiders started losing games or he felt he wasn't getting the ball enough. Crabtree would have blown up and been a cancer had he played in Oakland and the Raiders organization knew this as all reports of him acting like a prima donna when he visited Oakland turned out to be true.

The Raiders don't need Randy Moss, they need someone who shuts up and plays hard.

He may have blown up during the season (I doubt it's as guaranteed as you seem to think it is), but the reason Crabtree is holding out right now is because he wants what DHB got. If Crab went to Oakland, he would've signed by now.

This whole thing is stupid though. I saw this thread and I automatically assumed it would be filled with comments like "He just wants to get paid, and he'll ink his contract before the season starts." Instead it's filled with speculations of him playing in Europe and shit. Is that a possibility? No, I'm using a combination of physical tools, height, weight, overall skills along with how they did in college. No doubt there are busts aplenty but tools-wise DHB is not with the elite WRs that came out of the draft.

There are a lot of red flags about DHB around the NFL, it's why most teams were laughing when the Raiders took him.

Yeah, maybe he does well, who knows... a lot of the NFL draft is a crapshoot. So yeah, you're point is well-taken it was just a VERY weird pick and from an orgainzation that has not had a great reputation for draft picks it turns a lot of heads.

If a team that drafts amazingly well year after year took him there would be a lot less speculation about him, but the fact it was the Raiders and DHB had the best 40 time, people are led to believe he was just drafted for his high 40 time whether or not that is actually the case.

I hope the 49ers call his bluff if he really feels that way. He's got a Deion Sanders type attitude but hasn't did sh-t yet. He can't afford to sit out. I would like to see him sit out just to see if he will do it. The 49ers shouldnt want that type of person on the team.

What's lost in all of this is that Crabtree isn't the only top 10 rookie who hasn't signed. Just the most noticeable because of his cousin.

1. This is a non-issue, as far as I'm concerned. Name one player drafted top ten who has been fucking stupid enough to sit out an entire year and re-enter the draft? Not only does Crabtree sit out of football for too long, but he will also leave a bad taste in the mouths of any teams interested in him. Afterall, how do you know he won't demand the same ridiculous things out of your team? It's either a bluff, or an all-out lie. Either way, Crabs will sign a contract...it might be late (see JaMarcus Russell), but he'll be in red and gold.

2. This in no way justifies the Raiders drafting a WR they could've EASILY drafted late in the first round. DHB was not worth the 7th overall pick. I don't give a fuck if he ends up being a superstar...the simple fact of the matter is that Oakland overpaid, and missed out on extra draft picks.

3. Top ten rookie contract negotiations are always long and drawn out (for the majority of the players). The only reason this is even an issue is because a family member went running his mouth to the press. Let's not go labeling Crabtree a team cancer just yet...how about we wait and see him play a game or two?

Well obviously if DHB becomes Joey Galloway you'd be happy, because that's his best case scenario. But the choice should not have been between Crabtree and DHB, it should have been between Crabtree and anyone else because DHB was a huge reach.

I can understand if you want to point to character concerns as a reason to not draft a guy, but it doesn't justify who you did in fact select in his place.

No, I completely understand what you are saying, but like I said it's not a certainty. And mostly every single wide receiver that's worth a damn acts like a prima donna bitch at some time. That doesn't necessarily mean he's going to act like a big enough bitch to destroy the team. Very few men are capable of doing that.

If you feel you are a lot better at doing your job than Steve, and both you and Steve have the same experience doing the job, but Steve just got paid more than you, aren't you going to tell your boss you feel you deserve more? I know from personal experience that my dad has walked into his boss's office before and said, "I want this much more an hour, I want these days off, and I want a guarantee of this many hours every week or I'm gone." They gave him everything he wanted and more, and he knew he could do it because he knew they needed him. And they knew they needed him and they knew if they didn't give him what he wanted that he could go to any other mechanic shop and get what he wanted. That's essentially the same thing that's going on here with Crabtree, and it's just business.

I don't really understand how that could be his best case scenario. He hasn't played a down in the NFL. Who's to say that he doesn't shock the world and become a great WR. Especially since the things he has trouble with (hands, route running to an extent etc.) are all fixable with work. It's not like he's 5'9 and will never get taller. If he puts in the work, what's stopping him from being great?

It's called a projection. Based on his skills, his expectations to me, are, at best, a Joey Galloway type of WR. Which is nothing to sneeze at, Galloway has had a decent career, if not spectacular.

Sure, there's no telling and he could exceed expectations, but to me, those expectations are low.

But the things you mention (hands, route running, etc.) are things that people either have or don't have IMO. You can improve on them, but if you haven't shored up these weaknesses by the time you are a college junior/senior, you will get exposed by NFL competition.

Exactly. Crabtree and his agent are well aware of the fact that if they sit out for an entire year, and re-enter the draft in 2010, they'll get nowhere near the amount of money the 49ers are even offering, much less what they want. It is not a wise financial decision any way you slice it.
