All these hours of sports talk about Luck or Manning, all to be decided by a retirement, not a trade or release.

I'm pretty shocked that in this new era of Eli Manning & rookies throwing for 4000 yards, multiple 5000 yard passers, and ho-hum 400 yard, 5 TD passing games from people like Matt Flynn, that NFL GM's are so behind the curve on the value of QB's.

The value of QB's is at an all time low. The value of a 4200 yard season is about equal to a 3200 yard season of a decade ago. Passing yards are the easiest to come by since...ever.

And yet the Colts are going to blow millions of dollars on a fucking QB based on media pressure, hype, and an antiquated way of thinking.

If I were an NFL GM, I would build my team with a pass blocking line and pass rushers. I would never take a QB before the third round. The league is moving in a direction where any half competent QB can have success with these rules if surrounded by the right talent.

Keep your QB upright, and sack the other guys QB before his guys inevitably get open. That's where its at now.

I think its cheaper this way.

You have a guy whos so likely to be at least good in this league for all the reasons mentioned you put him in and continue the Manning road where you put it all on one guy. If for some reason you pass him up and that OL/DT/CB you draft with the picks you get dont turn out to be stellar players your team will struggle and fans/media will be all over you. Drafting a QB is a shield.

The concern with Manning's health is that we aren't hearing anything about it. Last week he did two interviews and never mentioned his health. That should be of concern, because if he was on schedule we'd be hearing something. We know he was throwing some passes, but that isn't contact football.

EDIT: Mortenson was on ESPN radio saying he's working to come back and should be on track to know sometime in May. He said the question isn't if Manning will return, but when and with whom.

Wow, it's almost as if it's really easy to draft a franchise QB in the modern era! Kind of takes the legs out of the "BUT LUCK IS THE ONLY GOOD ONE EVER" narrative no?

Stafford, Roethlisberger, Eli, Cam, Flacco, Ryan, Rodgers ... all drafted in the last 10 years. All contribute very much. All very close.

So how can Luck be a once in a generation prospect? What is Cam Newton then? What is Matt Stafford then? What was Aaron Rodgers then? Do those guys not count? Luck's ceiling is seriously higher than Aaron Rodgers? You expect me to believe that?

If Peyton Manning is healthy come training camp, the Colts are a relevant team again and would be better equipped to make the playoffs than they would be with going with a rookie.

Again, why make your team worse on purpose, unless you have no choice? The Colts have a choice, but they want people to think they don't so it softens the PR blow.

Yes, stats are inflated, but 4 of those 5 QB's are Super Bowl MVP's.

The quarterback position is not overrated.

I personally believe Luck will be very special, thus I would draft him irregardless of Manning's health. Because 10-15 years of not having to ever worry about that position trumps not worrying about it for another year or two, tops.

I think Luck will be very good, but he is worth more to other teams than he is to the Colts IMO, and that could yield quite the package of picks and/or veterans via trade. Also I tend to agree with w2b about the value of the position. Andrew fucking Dalton ... not just playing as a rookie, but thriving. Marino, Elway, etc. struggled greatly as rookies, that learning curve has been completely thrown out of the equation. The Colts will have plenty of opportunities to shore up their QB spot for the future, IMO. I can see the desire to go with one you feel is a sure thing, but passing on Luck does not necessarily doom your franchise or anything. Plenty of good QBs will be available in the next 5-10 years.

In addition, I think all the speculation that Manning is done is being orchestrated by Irsay. I trust none of it so far.

So far nobody knows this. The only people who think this are those who want it to be true so they have an easier time putting the best player in franchise history out to pasture. Obviously you draft Luck if Manning can't play but we don't know that yet.

The deal is most doubt he'll be healthy enough to pay him $28M on March 8th and possibly cripple the franchise long term when it comes to the salary cap.

No one knows, but if Peyton is healthy by then and you keep him the offense will be pretty good with about any one you put out on the field with him.

Peyton Manning plans to return to football, but he and Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay have not discussed his future, he said in an interview with ESPN on Tuesday.

Manning, in an interview with ESPN's Trey Wingo, said that he and Irsay will discuss whether the Super Bowl-winning quarterback will remain with the Colts "at the appropriate time, and when we do, I think some decisions will be made after that. But until then I'm just continuing to rehab, work hard, and to enjoy this week because it really is a special week for the city and certainly for my family."

Manning said that his recovery from spinal fusion surgery in September -- his third surgery in 19 months -- is going well despite the fact he didn't play last season.

"I really feel good. I continue to make progress every day," he said. "Everything that the doctors have told me has been on point, which is encouraging to me. I just had a great day today with rehab, just got back from the facility, and that's what we continue to do. Just keep trying to get better. So far I have. That's the plan from here on out."

Manning said that he'll continue to have checkups over the next several weeks, and termed his mood as "encouraging."
