Michigan Stadium. The Big House. Home of Michigan Football. One of the country's most classic, widely recognized sporting facilities, Michigan Stadium has come to symbolize the pride, tradition and excellence of the University of Michigan. There is truly no place like it on a fall Saturday afternoon.

In the early 1920s, Fielding Yost formed a vision that would become Michigan Stadium. With winning teams and large fan turnouts, Yost realized the need for a larger football stadium. He asked for the Regents' approval, but considering the 1921 expansion of Ferry Field, they were hesitant to move forward with a new stadium. With Yost's dogged perseverance, they finally approved it on April 22, 1926.

The new structure was built on land that had been home to an underground spring. The water posed a problem to the construction, creating a surface that resembled quicksand. It was this moist ground that during construction, engulfed a crane which remains under the stadium today. The high water table also led to nearly three-quarters of the stadium being built below ground level.

Yost envisioned a stadium that would seat between 100,000 and 150,000 people. After much debate, the Regents, the University of Michigan and Fielding Yost reached an agreement by which the stadium would seat 72,000, with the ability to expand to more than 100,000. The construction would be financed not by the taxpayers of the State of Michigan, but by the sale of 3,000 $500 bonds.

Fashioned after the Yale Bowl, 440 tons of reinforcing steel and 31,000 square feet of wire mesh went into the building of the 44-section, 72-row, 72,000-seat stadium at a cost of $950,000. As the stadium neared completion, Yost requested an additional 10,000 temporary seats for the concourse. This request was passed, and Michigan Stadium opened at the corner of Main Street and Stadium Boulevard with a capacity of 84,401 -- the largest college owned stadium of any team in the nation.

On Oct. 1, 1927, Michigan played Ohio Wesleyan in the first game at Michigan Stadium, winning 33-0. Dedication of the new stadium came three weeks later, Oct. 22, 1927, against Ohio State, in another Michigan victory. The Buckeyes had hoped for revenge from the dedication of their own stadium five years earlier when the Wolverines came away with a 19-0 victory, but it was not to be.

Since that inaugural season, Michigan Stadium has seen over 35 million fans pass through its gates and over 170 consecutive crowds of 100,000 plus. Many changes and renovations have continuously improved the quality of the facility, while increasing its capacity to its present 107,501. While there are many things known about Michigan Stadium, one aspect that remains a mystery is the location of Fritz Crisler's seat -- the one "extra" seat that is indicated in the capacity number given to Michigan Stadium every year since 1956. Despite this anonymity, the legacies of Crisler and Yost live on as Michigan continues to pack the stadium full of 100,000-plus fans game after game.

Bio

Michael John Kleinbauer was born on March 3rd, 1989, in Frankfurt, Germany. On Friday, July 27th, 2007, Michael became the youngest coach in College Football History at the age of 18. After former Lobos Head Coach Rocky Long made his shocking announcement that he had resigned as the Lobos Head Coach after 9 years because his heart wasn't in it anymore, Michael had gotten a call a week later to be the Head Coach of the University of New Mexico football program.

After 2 seasons with the New Mexico Lobos, Coach Kleinbauer decided that it was time to move on in his short career with the Lobos, but not without changing the Lobos Football Team's culture, turning them into a school to look out for this season. The player turned Coach got the call from the University of Michigan after the 2008 Season with the Lobos and was ecstatic to join the Wolverines as he's been a lifelong fan of the University of Michigan. "It really is a dream come true that the University of Michigan would like my services. I hope to continue the great tradition that this university has."

Since then Coach Kleinbauer has led the Wolverines to 3 consecutive winning seasons since joining the team, hosting a 2-1 record in Bowl Games with the Wolverines.

Kleinbauer played football throughout his High School career, playing at Wideout & Cornerback, also playing on Special Teams at Alamogordo High School.

Week 1 - Game Report

Connecticut Huskies (0-0) at Michigan Wolverines (0-0)

TateForcierRunning.jpg

Sophomore sensation QB Tate Forcier ran wild on UConn's defense.

Ann Arbor, MI (AP) - Opening Day of the 2010 College Football season is here folks! On a beautiful 65 degree sunny day in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Coach Michael Kleinbauer looks to continue his tenure as the Wolverines head coach in hopes for another winning season along with molding the team back into it's pro-style roots.

UConn would win the coin toss and elect to receive as redshirt Freshman kicker Brendan Gibbons kicked the ball off to start the season. Starting from their 22 yard, redshirt Senior QB Zach Frazier would bring his Huskies offense out on the field and start from the pistol immediately going into a no huddle offense. Michigan's defense is tested right out the gates as they look a bit shaken as Frazier moves his offense right down the field into Wolverines territory at their 35. On a 3rd and 14, UConn runs a HB Draw to pick up 13 yards as the offense stays on the field set to go for it on 4th and 1. A HB stretch play to Junior HB Jordan Todman as he gets stopped behind the line by the redshirt Freshman FS Cameron Gordon! Michigan football at their 29.

Sophomore QB Tate Forcier would head out on the field with his offense and start the season off from the I-Form, a relief to many Wolverines fans around the nation. Albeit only a 1 yard gain, they followed it with a 11 yard pass to the Junior, Junior Hemingway that is. Disaster would strike on the following play however as HB Michael Shaw was stripped of of the football with a Huskie falling on the football. Almost a repeat result of the Huskies first drive as they get down to the Wolverines 13 yard line before facing a 4th and 2 as their offense would again stay out on the field and again the Wolverines defense would hold to give their offense another shot at their own 13.

Forcier moved his team right down the field this time with his arm and legs, picking up some key first downs on 3rd down. Eventually getting all the way down to the Huskies 4 yard line. On 2nd and goal Forcier would take the snap, drop back 2 yards before throwing a laser to the redshirt Sophomore Roy Roundtree on the slant for a Wolverines touchdown! 7-0 Michigan with a little over 5 minutes remaining in the half. Michigan's defense finally held UConn's fast-paced offense to a 3 and out the next drive forcing them to punt. Starting from their 22 yard line, Forcier and co stepped onto the field once more. Not wanting to jinx Forcier, but he looked very sharp in todays game in his first start in Coach Kleinbauer's pro-style offense. Throwing accurate passes and creating some excitement with his legs as from the Huskies 37 yard line he dropped back to pass with the pressure coming he stepped up into the pocket, shifted gears and ran all the way down the sidelines stiff arming a defender before being tackled from behind at UConn's 3 yard line! Almost on cue though, Tate made his first mistake throwing into coverage for an interception giving the ball back right before halftime. The teams headed into the locker room with the Wolverines sitting with a 7-0 lead.

Michigan received the football at the start of the 2nd half as fellow Sophomore QB, speedy Denard Robinson took the field as Coach Kleinbauer stated during Spring Training that he wasn't sure exactly where Denard would fit in at, but that he would get playing time. The man they call "Shoelaces" showed off his arm and legs on this drive capping it off with a great 36 yard throw to the Junior WR Darryl Stonum for the touchdown! That drive might have been a statement from Denard Robinson to his coach that he can be an effective QB as well. 14-0 Wolverines as they come out of halftime with something to prove. The Wolverines defense fed off of their offense forcing another punt on a 3 and out.

Towards the end of the 3rd quarter after both teams went back and forth for a bit, Forcier would find Junior WR Martavious Odoms wide open in the back of the endzone for a touchdown giving the Wolverines a comfortable 20-0 lead heading into the 4th quarter (the freshman kicker missed the extra point).

No more points would be scored as Michigan ran the clock down on offense while UConn's offense continued to struggle. If this game was any indication of how the Wolverines season is going to go, things are looking up for Coach Kleinbauer's Maize n' Blue. The final score in this one, Michigan shuts out Connecticut 20-0.

Nice game. How do you like the sliders...
From what I've seen I love em so far. I need to play some teams that are a little more balanced (and better) than my team though to really find out about them. So far there great though. Heisman is great.
