Roy+Roundtree+Denard+Robinson+LMtNv_It-Fem.jpg

The Duo of Denard Robinson & Roy Roundtree will Return for their Senior Seasons

Ann Arbor, MI (AP) - Michigan fans can rest easier this evening as the duo of Junior QB Denard Robinson & redshirt Junior WR Roy Roundtree announced together earlier today that they both were coming back for their Senior season to win a National Championship. Although that is relieving, what isn't is that Junior DE Craig Roh has decided to leave for the NFL Draft.

The biggest hit the Wolverines team took was certainly on their defensive line. With Craig Roh leaving for the NFL Draft, redshirt Senior DE Ryan Van Bergen (who set the Michigan school record of 13.5 sacks this season), and Senior DT Mike Martin graduating, the Wolverines defensive front is going to look entirely different next season. Roh, Van Bergen, and Martin were all First-Team All Americans this past season as they lead Michigan to a total of 45 sacks, which was most in the country. Their presence definitely will be missed.

Other notable names that are graduating are the Returner of the Year, WR/RET Darryl Stonum who was probably more of a threat through the air as one of Denard's favorite safety net receivers all season long. HB Michael Shaw is also a big name that will be graduating as he had a break out year that certainly helped his draft stock rushing for well over 1,000 yards. TE Kevin Koger, WR Junior Hemingway, CB Troy Woolfolk, and T Mark Huyge are also on their way out.

A total of 16 players in all, including an interesting transfer with redshirt Sophomore HB Fitzgerald Toussaint leaving to Central Michigan for a better opportunity of playing.

Ann Arbor, MI (AP) - Impressive. That's the word to describe Coach Kleinbauer's very late push that resulted in the #1 Recruiting Class in the entire country. The Wolverines were ranked #88 in recruiting classes after the Gator Bowl, but off-season recruiting proved to be absolutely huge for Michigan.

With the recruiting looking a little bleak towards the end of the season with a few solid signings during it, Michigan's program was a little unsure of how the upcoming year would look with incoming Freshman, but they are nothing but smiles now as Coach Kleinbauer somehow hauled in the #1 class in a matter of 5 weeks (let's hope he didn't take the check book route...we keed we keed).

Look for some new names to make their mark during their freshman season as Coach Kleinbauer's stated that many of the recruits won't be redshirted and plans on having them make an impact in the very first season.

I did not know Denard's completion percentage was so low... Wish he had hit 1000 yards rushing again... he'd be on his way to being only the second player, behind Colin Kaepernick, to throw for 2000 and rush for 1000 three years in a row.

Week 2 - Game Report

#10 Michigan Wolverines (0-0) (0-0) at #1 Alabama Crimson Tide (0-0) (0-0)

Breaking Their Tuscaloosa Heart
OffThePost.jpg

It's a Game of Inches on the Field...and in the Air

Ann Arbor, MI (AP) - After being finalized almost 2 years ago, the date has finally arrived. September 1st, 2012, which means two of the winningest teams in college football clash against each other, the #10 Michigan Wolverines face off against the #1 Alabama Crimson Tide in what could already play a role in the National Championship game at the end of the season. On a beautiful afternoon in Tuscaloosa, Alabama (since neutral sites aren't in yet...otherwise it'd be Dallas Stadium, just saying), two teams with high hopes clash with what already has a bowl game feel to it.

The game didn't start off well for the Wolverines as they punted the ball to Bama after a quick 3 and out that led to two big 3rd and long gaffs that led to a 65 yard touchdown drive by the Crimson Tide for the early 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Crimson Tide ended up having a defense lapse of their own at the start of the 2nd quarter as on 3rd and 8 from their own 40, they somehow seemed to forget who was lining up at quarterback for the Wolverines as Denard Robinson came out in a 5 wide shotgun set, saw that there was no one in the middle after the 4-man rush and audibled down to a QB draw and ran straight up the gut untouched for the 40 yard touchdown to tie the game right back up, 7-7.

Both teams were pretty much deadlocked for the remained for the first half before Bama tacked on 3 points and a hail mary attempt to the endzone by the Wolverines was swatted down for a 10-7 Alabama lead at halftime.

The 3rd quarter would lead to some exciting defense as both teams turned the ball over before redshirt Junior QB A.J. McCarron threw his second pick of the day as redshirt Sophomore CB Terrence Talbot jumped in front of the receiver to pick it off with nothing but 70 yards of daylight ahead of him giving Michigan their first lead of the day, 14-10. It didn't take too long for the Tide to get up by a touchdown again though as the next drive they settled for 3 points before stopping the Wolverines on a 3 and out which led to another big drive, only this time capped off by a touchdown pass followed by a 2 point conversion. 21-14 Alabama at the end of the 3rd quarter.

The 4th quarter started off with a bang as McCarron threw his 3rd interception of the game, this time to redshirt Senior CB J.T. Floyd giving Michigan's offense the ball at their own 42 yard line. On the first play of the new drive, Denard faked the handoff to Senior HB Vincent Smith and rolled out right under pressure, heaved a bomb all the way to the endzone to his good buddy Senior WR Roy Roundtree for the 57 yard tying touchdown! That's exactly what the duo came back to do this season as it's a ballgame again with 7 minutes remaining, 21-21.

Later in the 4th both quarterbacks traded back to back interceptions (Denard's 1st, McCarron's 4th) with Michigan's offense finally driving down field late attempting a 40 yard kick with Sophomore K Matt Wile, who struggled last season from distance. The snap & hold were good as Wile kicked a line drive past the uprights for the 3 points, Wolverines leading 24-21 now with 2 minutes remaining in the game. Bama's offense trotted onto the field as McCarron threw 3 straight incomplete passes leading to a do or die 4th down. From the shotgun set, McCaron took the snapp, bounced around in the pocket a bit and just before getting drilled heaved up a 43 yard pass that ended up being a jump ball one on one on the sidelines....CAUGHT by true Freshman and Michigan native WR Derek Butler, oh my! Now another incompletion and a loss of 1 on a run, McCarron drilled his receiver for 10 yards, but faced a 4th and 1 with 44 seconds remaining. Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban decided to bring out the field goal unit before Coach Kleinbauer called a timeout perhaps to ice the kicker and prepare his defense for any fakes. Both teams trotted back onto the field before Junior K Cade Foster took the kick as it went up, sailing for what seemed like an eternity...further to the right, further...it hits off the post and bounces into the endzone! NO GOOD! Foster missed a 30 yard field goal as a camera of both head coaches pops up with Saban showing a face of disappointment and disbelief as Kleinbauer has a huge grin giving a fist pump.

What a game and what a huge victory for Coach Kleinbauer and his Michigan Wolverines. Arguably the hardest test of the season came early and they survived, but can they keep winning and make it to the National Title? That remains to be seen, but one helluva way to jumpstart the journey! #10 Michigan takes down #1 Alabama 24-21.
