Junior SS Tyler Sash just barely misses a 4th down pass to redshirt Junior WR Junior Hemingway that could have changed the outcome in this game

Ann Arbor, MI (AP) - A week after losing a tough battle against the Michigan State Spartans, the Michigan Wolverines (5-1) (0-1) return to the Big House to defend their home turf to the #11 Iowa Hawkeyes (4-1) (0-1) in a downpour of rain that could play a factor in this game.

Iowa won the coin toss and decided to kick to start the game off giving them the ball to start the second half. Sophomore QB Tate Forcier steps onto the field with his offense for the first time since the heartbreaking loss last weekend starting from their 33 after a decent return. They couldn't get much going though as a quick 3 and out resulted in a punt to give the Hawkeyes offense the ball for the first time this game from their 26. Iowa's offense suffered the same fate as the Wolverines as they punted the ball right back to Michigan. Same results occurred again as finally Iowa's offense would get things going before stalling out within Michigan's goal line, but they still tacked on 3 points to take the early lead 3-0.

Michigan's offense got something going their following drive before Forcier took a big hit on an option keeper which caused a fumble that the Hawkeyes fell on top of giving their offense the ball back around midfield. The Hawkeyes gained a couple first downs before attempting a 36 yard field goal in which redshirt Senior K Daniel Murray missed wide right, perhaps the weather played a factor but it was a horribly kicked ball. Iowa found themselves in another long field goal opportunity as Murray barely squeezed in the 47 yarder this time. 6-0 Iowa with a little over 2 minutes remaining in the half.

Trying to get something going Tate Forcier picked up a first down with his legs before throwing a pass he never should have rolling out to his right firing a deep bomb in double coverage getting picked off and giving the Hawkeyes the ball back once again at midfield. Luckily enough for Michigan, their defense stepped up forcing a 3 and out giving their offense one last opportunity to put some points on the board before halftime with 51 seconds remaining on their own 23 yard line. After an incompletion, Forcier would by some time in the pocket with his feet and fire a laser to a wide open Junior TE Kevin Koger towards the sidelines as he caught it, managed to stay in and head upfield before being pushed out after a 30 yard gain putting the Wolverines on Iowa's 48 with 37 seconds remaining. After throwing 2 deep incompletions, Forcier found redshirt Junior WR Junior Hemingway for a gain of 14 as the Wolverines called a timeout with 5 seconds remaining as the kick team trotted on to the field. Redshirt Freshman K Brendan Gibbons lined up to attempt a 50 yard field goal in nasty weather with 6 mph winds blowing against him...not only did he miss horribly to the right, it wouldn't have been long enough as the teams head into halftime with the score 6-0 Iowa.

The Hawkeyes received the ball to start the second half as on the very first play redshirt Junior DE Ryan Van Bergen sacked the redshirt Senior QB Ricky Stanzi for a loss of 5 yards. 2 plays later and the Hawkeyes were forced to punt giving the Wolverines good field position at their 45. The first play would be a 14 yard rush up the gut for Sophomore HB Vincent Smith. Michigan's offense looked impressive for the next several plays finally getting to the Hawkeyes 6 yard line before Smith made a costly mistake by fumbling and giving the ball right back to Iowa as Michigan fans began to boo. Michigan's defense continued to play well however forcing some losses before Iowa had to punt the ball right back giving Smith and Co a chance to redeem themselves already in Hawkeyes territory. Facing a 3rd and 6 Forcier dumped a screen pass off to Smith who broke two tackles but still was caught from behind for only a gain of 2 yards. Facing a 4th and 4 with a 51 yard field goal looming, Coach Kleinbauer decided to keep his offense on the field to see if they could come through with a big conversion. Coming out in a 4-wide shotgun set with the pressure coming, Forcier rolled to the left a bit and waited til the last second to throw a bullet to redshirt Junior WR Kelvin Grady who was wide open over the middle for a pickup of 23 yards putting the offense on the Hawkeyes 11! Although on the very next play a holding penalty was called moving them back to the 19. Not a problem for Forcier though as after a first down incompletion, he would throw another slant to an open Hemingway who fought for extra yards falling into the endzone for the touchdown! 7-6 Michigan now with under a minute remaining in the 3rd quarter.

Michigan's defense came up with another stellar stop as the Hawkeyes were forced to punt at the start of the 4th quarter as the Wolverines offense took the field once more at their 37. After taking a crushing sack on a playaction, Forcier faced pressure one more time and threw it right to the stud redshirt Junior SS Tyler Sash's hands giving the Hawkeyes excellent field position on the Wolverines 22 yard line. What a costly mistake as Coach Kleinbauer is livid on the sidelines. Michigan's defense did an exceptional job once more as on 3rd and inches on their 2 yard line, they came up with a huge stopped that forced the Hawkeyes to attempt a 20 yard field goal from the left hash mark. Murray would boot the ball as it was up and...NO GOOD! He missed it just to the right! Unbelievable! Missing an extra point essentially that would have gave his team the lead once again in the 4th quarter as the Wolverines come away with a HUGE break. Michigan's offense worked the clock hard this entire drive and with good results picking up multiple first downs getting all the way to Iowa's 45 yard line with 2:16 remaining. Iowa began using their timeouts as the Wolverines faced a 3rd and 12 situation. Coach Kleinbauer decided to go with a pass as the Hawkeyes blitzed, Forcier dropped back, felt the pressure, stepped back up into the pocket a zipped a past deep over the middle to Junior WR Darryl Stonum who came up with the grab just over the defenders hands and dragged the defender to the 1 yard line! What a play all around there as the Hawkeyes used their last timeout with 2:05 remaining. Iowa's defense stopped Smith for a loss of 2 on the next play as the clock continued to tick. Another handoff to the right side this time as Smith got small and found just a big enough hole getting tackled into the endzone for a touchdown as the Wolverines booted through the extra point putting them up by 8 with just a 1:24 remaining as the fans felt an upset emerging in Ann Arbor!

Starting from his 23 yard line, Stanzi would come out of the shotgun taking a huge 10 yard sack by Van Bergen, his 2nd sack of the day as the clock ticks away with Stanzi slowly getting back up after the big hit but going into a no huddle mode spiking the ball. 3rd and 20 now with 1:03 remaining, Iowa needs a huge play here in obvious 4 down territory. Stanzi drops back and throws deep as the ball is batted down! 1 more play now, a 4th and 20 for all the marbles, can Michigan's defense hold on for one more play. Stanzi drops back with his receivers going deep, needs to get the football out of his hand with pressure coming, he throws it up and it's PICKED OFF by the redshirt Sophomore CB J.T. Floyd who falls down as his teammates dogpile on him knowing they just upset the #11 Iowa Hawkeyes! Coach Kleinbauer was still yelling at his players to get off the field so his offense could come out and make it official. 2 victory formation snaps and official it was, a great bounce back performance by the Wolverines this week after that heartbreaking loss the previous weekend.

The final score in this one, the Michigan Wolverines 14, the Iowa Hawkeyes 6.

Coach Kleinbauer Was On Jim Rome Is Burning Earlier Today

Jim Rome: "Welcome back to the show, I have a terrific guest on the show today, the young mastermind behind the Michigan Wolverines, Head Coach Michael Kleinbauer. How's it going coach?"

Michael Kleinbauer: "Pretty good Jim, just enjoying the bye week."

Rome: "I would imagine so. Especially since coming off of that huge win against previously #11 Iowa this past weekend. What a defensive game that was."

Coach Kleinbauer: "Oh without a doubt. It reminded me of the previous decades of Big Ten football. Those tough, grinding, defensive battles that I grew up watching as a kid. I will say it's alot easier to be a spectator than a coach in those kinds of games though."

Rome: "Understandable, but there's got to be a portion of it that you enjoy no?"

Coach Kleinbauer: "Definitely. I think if you don't enjoy the game and have at least some kind of passion for it you're in the wrong business. I'm still young, but I'm starting to realize the saying of, "Games like these give coaches gray hair." if things continue on the way they are I may be rocking the silver buzz by the end of the year."

*laughter*

Rome: "Speaking of this season coach, your team is sitting at 6-1 right now, 2-0 in conference play, but that Michigan State game a couple weeks back had to be a painful loss. As a young coach, how did you take that loss and what did you tell your players after? In particularly, your young QB Tate Forcier?"

TateForcierRunning-1.jpg

Coach Kleinbauer: "That was an emotional and intense game. It was one of the best games I've been apart of in my career so far even though the outcome wasn't what I would have liked it to be obviously. It was heartbreaking for me, the fans, and the players...especially to Tate. I think there was under a minute left after they just scored what would be the winning touchdown and first play he comes out and throws the pick. He was so frustrated and upset with himself when he came to the sidelines and I remember going over to him and all he kept saying is, "I didn't see him. I threw the game away.". As a previous player myself in I can understand where he's coming from and the emotions you experience, but at the end of the day you learn from those experiences and move forward."

Rome: "Yea I remember watching that game and when he went to the sidelines the cameras caught a shot of him throwing his helmet on the bench. I'd imagine he's feeling much better though after this last victory. The road certainly doesn't get easier from here though. Your currently in your bye week but next week you head to Beaver Stadium to face another tough Big Ten foe, the currently #7 team in the country, the Penn State Nittany Lions (5-1) (2-0). What exactly are you going to do to prepare for that road trip?"

Coach Kleinbauer: "I can see that game being another offensive struggle. That'll be at the end of October in Pennsylvania so it's gonna be cold and facing one of, if not the greatest college football coach of all time in Joe Pa. Not gonna be an easy game that's for sure, they got a great running game and we're going to need to hold that in check early on. Should be another exciting, gray hair causing matchup."

*more laughter*

Rome: "Well America will be watching that game Coach and I wish you the best of luck in that game and the rest of your season. Always nice to have you on, take care."

Coach Kleinbauer: "Always a pleasure Jim."

1st 5-Star Prospect Committing To UM Is Big TE

Ann Arbor, MI - The big 6'6", 257 lbs. TE out of San Antonio, TX had verbally committed to Michigan last week after the universities big win over Iowa. Over the Wolverines bye week Coach Kleinbauer flew down to Chambers' home and met with his family to pretty much seal the deal as the blocking TE will be arriving on campus next Spring, "It's been a tough decision, especially with the distance from my parents, but they realize how much this means to me and I can't wait to play for Coach Kleinbauer and help the team win."

Brian Chambers' major is undecided.

Another DB Committs To Michigan

Ann Arbor, MI - Along with Brian Chambers, :3star: CB Tom Minor from Sterling Heights, MI committed to the University of Michigan today. The 5'10", 175 lbs. speedster contains that playmaking ability and athleticism the Wolverines are looking for Coach Kleinbauer stated, "Honestly I don't know how this kid was rated a 3-star prospect, but I'm sure glad we got him. The kid is quick, explosive, has good hands. One of the issues he may need some work on is his mental awareness, he recognizes plays well but sometimes he can be a bit sporadic from the tapes I've seen on him. Luckily for us, the mental side of this game is teachable, the physical portion not so much and Tom (Minor) has all the attributes there to be a big playmaker for our secondary in the years to come.".

Tom Minor will be majoring in Psychology.

Redshirt Junior HB Stephfon Green Broke Free For A Huge 83 Yard Rushing TD

It Was Over When... - On the very last play while Michigan was on the Nittany Lions 45 yard line down by 2 with no timeouts and 4 seconds as a Hail Mary was swatted down by a defender to end the game.

Turning Point - When redshirt Freshman HB/RET Fitzgerald Toussaint fumbled on a kickoff right after Penn State scored a touchdown to bring them within 1. Very next play after fumble was another touchdown.

Stat Of The Night - Redshirt Junior HB Stephfon Green dominating on the ground and receiving going over 100+ yards each.

Week 10 - Game Report

Illinois Fighting Illini (3-5) (1-4) at Michigan Wolverines (6-2) (2-2)

"The Most Ridiculous, Emotionally Draining, Heartbreaking Loss Of My Life"...With A Twist

DevinGardner.jpg

True Freshman QB Devin Gardner Wow'd The Country With His Near-Comeback

Ann Arbor, MI (AP) - The Illinois Fighting Illini (3-5) (1-4) headed up north to face Big Ten foe, the Michigan Wolverines (6-2) (2-2) who are returning back to a very wet Big House after losing a nailbiter last week in Happy Valley to the #7 Penn State Nittany Lions 30-28. Looking to perhaps take their anger out on a struggling Fighting Illini team.

Illinois won the toss and elected to receive in hopes of striking early to perhaps knock the Wolverines off balance. After picking up a quick 1st down on the first play of the drive, Michigan's defense held the Fighting Illini to a 4th and 2 forcing them to punt the ball giving the Wolverines offense their first shots of the game from their 16 yard line. Michigan's offense also picked up a first down before Sophomore QB Tate Forcier made his first mistakes of the day throwing it under pressure right to the big fella, Junior DT Corey Liuget who was playing a zone over the middle, catching it and getting tackled at the Wolverines 21 yard line. First play of the next drive, a 15 yard power run by Junior HB Mikel LeShoure as he broke 3 tackles on the play before getting dragged down at the 6. The following play, a HB screen for a touchdown was the result as Michigan went down early 6-0 (missed extra point).

Both teams went back and forth for a little longer before Forcier threw his second intereception of the game under pressure again. This time it was to Junior CB Tavon Wilson who was immediately tackled, but still giving his offense excellent field position once more at Michigan's 26. 2 Plays later and redshirt Freshman QB Nathan Scheelhaase tossed his 2nd touchdown of the game, this time to redshirt Sophomore TE London Davis on a 16 yard corner route. 12-0 Illinois at the end of the 1st quarter (the kicker missed ANOTHER extra point). Forcier started to get things together on the next drive, although his offense stalled out around midfield before punting it. A beautiful punt by Freshman P Will Hagerup as the ball bounced and stopped at the 3 yard line. Michigan sent the house on the first play of the drive taking down Scheelhaase in the endzone for a safety finally putting the Wolverines on the board. 12-2 Illinois. The offense wouldn't be able to do much though as receivers were open, but everything was going wrong. Tipped passes at the line, receiver drops, all of it as another punt was the result. Luckily for the Wolverines, their defense started to step it up and make some stops. This gave their offense some life on their next drive as they drove all the way down into the redzone before Forcier threw his 3rd pick of the game in the endzone. Coach Kleinbauer was seen on the sidelines with his hands on his head shaking it slowly not saying a word to his struggling QB as he came to the sideline. The defense bailed him out again though as they got the ball back at midfield after a punt. This time it would be the Sophomore HB Vincent Smith who fumbled the ball away as Illinois capitalized off of this turnover with another touchdown (and another missed XP...how pathetic) as Michigan was now down 18-2 with a little over a minute remaining in the half. Tate moved his offense down the field as the Wolverines kicked a 40 yard field goal to head into halftime down 18-5.

Michigan received the ball to start the 2nd half off as interesting note that it appears Coach Kleinbauer is going to give Sophomore QB Denard Robinson a chance on this first drive at the least with Tate Forcier on the bench with his helmet off. And well...let's just say that first drive didn't last long as after a run for no gain, Robinson dropped back to pass and threw it right into Wilson's hands again, his second pick of the day as Illinois offense comes out on Michigan's 16. What a horrible game so far for the Maize n' Blue as Coach Kleinbauer is expressionless on the sidelines. 2 plays later, another touchdown pass for Scheelhaase as the kicker actually made the extra point this time! 25-5 Fighting Illini. Would we see Denard Robinson once more? Yes, we would in fact as he trotted back onto the field as it appears his coach is giving him the benefit of the doubt at least for another drive. From their 30, Denard would fake it to the halfback before rolling out to the right and deciding to scramble for 15 yards. He followed that with a 10 yard toss to redshirt Junior WR Kelvin Grady. Michigan's offense got down to Illinois' 35 yard line before facing a 4th and 5 as Coach Kleinbauer signaled for his offense to stay on the field for what was perhaps the last grasp for Michigan to do something to get back into this ballgame. Illinois brought the pressure, but Denard stepped up into the pocket, waited for the redshirt Sophomore WR Roy Roundtree to make his break and fired the pass towards the sidelines to him as he picked up 20 yards on the play to keep the drive alive and put the offense in the redzone. Several plays later, Shoelaces Denard Robinson ran the ball into the endzone for 5 yards giving his offense their first touchdown of the game. Interesting note that Robinson was perfect on that drive, 5/5. 25-12 Illinois now late in the 3rd quarter.

Michigan's defense fed off the offense's momentum as a 1st down incompletion followed by a 6 yard sack let to a long 3rd down that resulted in a batted ball forcing Illinois to punt. Starting from the Fighting Illini's 44 yard line, Denard Robinson headed onto the field once more. Moving down the field with ease until Robinson made a crucial mistake pitching it on a speed option right to the Sophomore CB Terry Hawthorne who took it right down the field the other way 81 yards for the touchdown! What a disastrous play as it looked like Michigan was shifiting into another gear before being stopped cold and being down by 20 once more. 32-12 Illinois at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Starting from their 20 now, Robinson remained in the game. After a quick first down, Robinson would get crushed as he was throwing on a 3rd and 19 as it fell right into the defenders hands for Illinois 5th interception of the game. The Big House wasn't silent as they were actually boo'ing rather loudly at a pitiful performance by their Wolverines. Michigan's defense held up as the kicker missed the field goal (shocking) giving the ball back to Michigan on their 22. Interestingly enough Coach Kleinbauer had seen enough out of Denard Robinson as the true Freshman QB Devin Gardner stepped onto the field for the first time in his collegiate career to show what he could do. He would receive a rude awakening as well as get got sacked on his very first play. His first pass that he actually got off missed a wide open Stonum deep over the middle. However, on the very next play on 3rd and 24, Illinois sent the house as Gardner read it and this time hit a wide open redshirt Junior WR Darryl Stonum over the middle on a short slant that turned into a 93 yard touchdown! A record 93 yard touchdown in fact! How's that for your first collegiate completion?! 32-19 as even Coach Kleinbauer had a rie smile on his face on the sidelines. Don't get too excited Michigan, as Scheelhaase said anything you can do I can do better, throwing a 79 yard touchdown pass to the Junior WR A.J. Jenkins who beat his man. Unbelievable. These games can be so ridiculous at times. 39-19 Illinois.

The freshman drove his team right down the field capping it off with a 7 yard HB Draw play out of the Shotgun to HB Vincent Smith for a touchdown. Fighting Illini's next drive, Michigan's defense made the game even more interesting as they forced a fumble and recovered it giving their offense the ball back on Illinois' 32 yard line with a little under 5 minutes remaining in the game and the score at 39-26. Although the offense struggled a bit this time facing a 4th and 10 situation as the offense stayed on the field. Gardner dropped back out of the shotgun and found a wide open Stonum for a 20 yard gain and first down! Several plays later, Michigan found themselves in a 4th and goal situation on the 1 yard line as Gardner kept it on the sneak and dove into the endzone for the touchdown! Can you believe this?! It's 39-33 Illinois now with 3:21 remaining in the game!

A holding on the kickoff would force the Fighting Illini offense to start from their 11 as Michigan's defense desperately needs another stop and fast. Illinois ran the ball 2 straight plays picking up the first down and milking the clock in the process. The clock at 1:55 now as Michigan's defense has all 3 timeouts remaining. 3rd and 7 as Michigan takes it's 1st timeout. Illinois would throw on 3rd and 7 and catch the ball short of the first down AND get pushed out of bounds to stop the clock! After a decent punt return, the Wolverines offense stepped out onto the field with pretty good field position at their 49 as Devin Gardner had a chance to be a hero forever in his first college appearence. Could he drive his team 51 yards to score the game winning touchdown? He hasd 1:35 to do so and 2 timeouts remaining. 1st down as Gardner rolled out right from the shotgun as he found a crossing Darryl Stonum like he has all day for 18 yards as Stonum went out of bounds. Stonum also just broke the school record for most receiving yards in a game as well! On the next play Gardner was sacked for a 10 yard loss as Michigan used it's 2nd timeout. 2nd and 20, Devin found an open Roundtree for 15 yard pickup over the middle as the offense hurried to the LOS with the clock going under a minute facing a 3rd and 5. Gardner found his big Senior TE Martell Webb for a 13 yard gain and a first down as the offense quickly rushed back up to the line and spiked the ball. 48 seconds left as Michigan was in Illinois redzone now on their 15 with 1 timeout left. Out of the shotgun, Gardner motioned Darryl Stonum, snapped the ball and tried for Stonum deep in the corner of the endzone 1 on 1....batted down! 3rd and 10 now, out of the shotgun once more. The blitz was coming quickly as Gardner dumped it out to Smith for a 5 yard gain as Michigan had to burn their last timeout with 35 seconds remaining on a 4th and 5 now...DRAMA! For all the marbles now, Gardner stepped out of the shotgun perhaps for the last time this game, takes the snap, scans the field, see's nothing, starts rolling out to the right, has to throw it now as he fires a rocket into the endzone to an open Kelvin Graaaady....DROPPED! UNBELIEVABLE! Grady just dropped the game winning touchdown pass as it bounced right out of his hands! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! Gardner throws his hands up for a touchdown signal, but puts them on his helmet just staring at Grady in the back of the endzone as the fans are going nuts! Coach Kleinbauer threw down his headset just glaring at Kelvin, oh my word! The comeback of a lifetime for this young kid and it's literally all in the hands of Grady as he drops it...unbelievable!

Illinois trotted back onto the field as they knew they just caught a HUGE break to win this football game kneeling the ball to make it official. Michigan falls for the 2nd straight week in a row as their New Year's Bowl hopes took a big blow after this loss. The final score is 39-33 Illinois.

Also, redshirt Junior Darryl Stonum finished with 212 receiving yards as the new Michigan receiving yards in a game record.

:4star: DT Committs To Michigan

Ann Arbor, MI - After soft committing to Michigan last week, the 6'5" 296 lbs. DT Christian Ponder signed the LOI earlier today and informed Coach Kleinbauer even after the Wolverines come off a rollercoaster of a loss to Illinois the previous day. Ponder looks to add some depth to the Wolverines defensive line as they have several seniors leaving after this season.

Christian Foster will be majoring in Accounting.
