Fallout Of "The Drop Heard Around The Country"[/size]
Ann Arbor, MI (AP) - 4 days after the Illinois/Michigan game the mood is still somber here in Ann Arbor as the rain has continued for 4 days, almost in a fittingly fashion. Several events have occurred as the gloomy mood around the whole state hasn't been like this since the Wolverines lost to Appalachian State in their home opener over 3 years ago. Only this time it wasn't necessarily the whole team to blame more-so than one player. The man that within 7 seconds of time had the opportunity to go down as a hero, chalked up as another receiver would go down in Michigan history in almost the same fashion as Michigan alumn Mario Manningham made his impact in 2006 against the Penn State Nittany Lions making the game winning touchdown to end it. Redshirt Junior WR Kelvin Grady is going down in history alright, but for the complete opposite reason.
In case you've been living in a cave this past week or so, Grady had an opportunity to win the game after what would have been an unbelievable comeback from a QB that no one even had heard of (outside of diehard Michigan fans) before, true Freshman QB Devin Gardner was put into the game in the 4th quarter with his team down by 27 points as he brought the Wolverines back within 6 and was a pass away from winning the game by 1-point. On a 4th and 5, Gardner rolled out to his right and zipped a pass into the endzone under pressure to an open Kelvin Grady who simply dropped the football. Not even a fingertip was laid on him as he dropped a pass on a play that he will never be able to forget, in the Big House no less. Sure, it was raining, but players wear gloves for a reason these days. The rain couldn't have been in his eyes either, he wears a visor. What happened? Only Kelvin knows. For those that haven't seen the play yet, here's the video footage:

With all this said, we've gotten an opportunity to talk to Coach Kleinbauer a couple days ago in a press conference and also a personal interview with Kelvin Grady. The first time he's been on camera since the incident in an interview that you don't want to miss and can show how much sports can mean to people.
First, here's the press conference with Coach Kleinbauer as he allowed questions this past Monday.
*Coach Kleinbauer walks to the podium with a stern look on his face, clearing his throat*
Coach Kleinbauer: "Before I start taking any questions, I just wanna update everyone on the teams injuries and a few other issues. As you guys know already, Obi (Ezeh) & Martavious (Odoms) both got hurt early on in the season, their still on track to return in 3 weeks hopefully in time. Both want to be back in time for the Ohio State game, but we're taking things day-to-day and their rehabbing hard so we'll see how things shake up. Brandin (Hawthorne) however should be back in time for the OSU game as his back is feeling much better, but we still want to take precaution to with that. Moving along to the quarterback situation, this hasn't been an easy choice at all, but we've decided we're going to go with Devin Gardner for this week's game against Purdue. It'll be his first official start and he earned it after his performance last week. This isn't stating he's the new starting QB for the week, but he will get an opportunity this weekend. With all that said, I'll start taking some questions now."
Reporter Jim Beam: "Coach, Jim Beam here from a Wolverines fan site..."
Coach Kleinbauer: "I like your whiskey."
*laughter*
Beam: "So on topic of Devin Gardner, just curious as to what exactly you thought of his performance and what you expected from him when you decided to put him in?"
Coach Kleinbauer: "Well like I just stated, he played outstanding for a kid that's never played on the college level before. I don't care what level it is, playing QB is not an easy task at all. Obviously he exceeded my expectations along with everyone else in this room I'm sure, he looked very poised, especially after taking a sack on his very first snap. The young man can certainly play and he proved that in just one quarter which is why the rest of the coaching staff and I want to see what he can do in a full-game and not playing from behind by three scores."
Reporter Melissa Fallon: "Coach, Melissa Fallon from Yahoo! Sports, I'm sure you were expecting questions concerning Kelvin Grady, I'll start it off. Did you think Grady caught the football at first?"
Coach Kleinbauer: "Honestly, I couldn't see it happening live. On the other sideline and in the rain a good distance away, I judged on the reaction of the fans at what had happened. All I remember is asking Troy (Woolfolk) who was standing next to me on the sidelines during that time if he caught it or not. His response was, "I have no idea..." so several seconds later we realized that he didn't catch it and then saw the replay which and that's when I felt sick to my stomach, like someone had punched me in the gut. In my mind when I realized he didn't catch it I thought a defensive back swatted it down or maybe it was uncatchable ball, then I see that it bounced right off his hands and I couldn't believe it."
Reporter Lisa Sampson: "Lisa Sampson from ESPN.com. Coach, after realizing that and when your offense came to the sidelines, did you say anything to Kelvin (Grady)?"
Coach Kleinbauer: "I didn't say a word to anyone on the sidelines, in fact I saw later that night on SportsCenter that they caught me throwing my headset on the ground after. Sorry Motorola. But after the game we headed to the lockerroom and really no one wanted to talk, Kelvin especially. I remember he sat in his uniform in the lockerroom and was the last player to leave, all I said to him was, "It happens, pick your head up and let's get to work next week again." He didn't respond as I left the lockerroom.
Reporter Rashad Stewart: "Rashad Stewart of the Michigan Post, Coach where do you go from here after dropping another Big Ten game?"
Coach Kleinbauer: "You really know how to irritate someone don't you? We'll practice like we have every week and go and play as hard as we can like we do every game. Next question."
Reporter Lewis Gentry: "Lewis Gentry here of MLive.com, Coach do you have anything particular planned for Purdue this weekend? Last time you travelled to West Lafayette you suffered a loss to the Boilermakers. Are you worried this could happen again, even more so after two heartbreaking losses in a row?"
Coach Kleinbauer: "How the heck am I supposed to respond to that Lewis? In this business, as a coach you can't worry bout the past, only the present. My gameplan isn't going to change just because a team beat me 2 years ago, sh** happens and you move on. Any more questions? No...later fellas."
*Coach Kleinbauer walks off stage*
Earlier today we had a chance to talk to Kelvin Grady who agreed to speak with us briefly on all the things that have been happening in his life the past week.
Journalist Roger Hobbins: "First off, thanks for agreeing to do this Kelvin."
Michigan WR Kelvin Grady: "No problem Roger."
Hobbins: "So first things first, what happened on that play?"
Grady: "I dropped the ball. I did my route, which was a 15 yard in-route, as soon as I made my cut and ran past the defender I looked towards Devin (Gardner) and realized the ball was already out of his hands and it wasn't until the last second that I saw it. I just couldn't get a handle on it."
Hobbins: "What was the first thought that entered your mind when the whistle was blown and the ball hit the ground?"
Grady: "That I just lost the game for my team. For Devin. He had the confidence to throw me the football in the biggest part of the game and I let him down along with the rest of the people that were in that stadium. I was disgusted at myself and couldn't believe that I let the victory literally slip through my fingers."
Hobbins: "What did your teammates say to you after the game?"
Grady: "They didn't say a word honestly. You could here a penny drop in the lockerroom. Everyone just got undressed and went about their business. I was still in a shock of sorts that I just sat down and thought to myself. A couple teammates came over and patted me on the shoulder, including Devin who said, "We'll get em next time man, don't worry bout it too much.". I wish it was that easy for me, but at that time I just felt horrible. One of the worst feelings in my life."
Hobbins: "So how have the past few days been?"
Grady: "Honestly, not great. My life's actually been threatened a few times around campus or even at the store, it's actually been scary. So much in fact that I've actually decided to step away from the football team and just focus on my education for this last year."
Hobbins: "Wait, so you actually quit the team? Have you told Coach Kleinbauer about this?"
Grady: "I did a few hours ago, met with him in his office and told him bout the situation, apologized again. He asked me if I was sure this is what I really wanted to do, but he was cool about it and understood where I was coming from. Wasn't really mad, you could tell he was a bit disappointed but he wasn't going to fight me on it. I just think it's the best thing for me to do at this time. Already told my family last night when I made up my mind on it. Emotional conversation with my mother, but she's always the person I've gone to when I need guidance, and of course God too."
Hobbins: "What's next for Kelvin Grady then?"
Grady: "Finish my schooling and get a good career. But I do wanna apologize to all the fans and my teammates for what happened. I know alot of people will say it's just a football game, but people take their football very seriously. Especially up here in Ann Arbor. I'll still be on the sidelines to cheer on the team, Coach Kleinbauer said it's the least I could do so I took him up on that offer."
Hobbins: "Well then Kelvin, I wish you the best of luck in your future endevours. I'm sure you have brighter days ahead of you."
Grady: "Thanks Roger. I'm sure I will as well, God always has a plan and thank you for this opportunity so I could air some of my thoughts."
Hobbins: "Anytime Kelvin, take care."
Grady: "You too."
