Michigan To Play In Gator Bowl...Again

Ann Arbor, MI (AP) - With the bowl announcements earlier this evening, the #15 Michigan Wolverines are headed to Jacksonville for the Gator Bowl for the second year in a row to face off against the Ole Miss Rebels. Fans around Ann Arbor weren't too happy to be hearing that as immediate flashbacks of last years bowl game against the Mississippi State Bulldogs ended in a blowout, with the Bulldogs coming out on top 52-14, Michigan's worst bowl loss in history. One student on campus stated, "When I first heard the Gator Bowl I had bad flashbacks, then I found out our opponent is Ole Miss and I thought, "Oh great, another team from Missisippi". The early vibe around campus is nervous after the two crushing losses to end the season."

Progressive+Gator+Bowl+Mississippi+State+v+SFDekht6Cetl.jpg

Just ask Senior WR Roy Roundtree how his experience in the Gator Bowl last season

Although Michigan fans have a reason to be worried about this upcoming game, they shouldn't be too nervous. Yes, they may have lost their last 2 games of the season in heartbreakers, but Coach Kleinbauer's Michigan Wolverines are a much different team than Rich Rodriguez's Michigan Wolverines. Granted, alot of the players may be the same, the mentality, experience, and playbook are not. Coach Kleinbauer commented quickly after finding out his Wolverines were going to Jacksonville, "To say I'm not disappointed that we didn't have an opportunity for a BCS Bowl would be a lie, however, I also think this gives this program a great opportunity to redeem itself in the same stadium that it was embarassed just a year ago. I can guarantee you we will not be blown out. Several kids on this team this year were on it last year, Denard (Robinson), Roy (Roundtree), Jordan (Kovacs), Ryan (Van Bergen), all those guys will be ready to go and won't allow the same results this year."

On the other side, the Ole Miss Rebels (7-5) (3-5) have everything to gain from this game as they weren't bowl eligable last year. Interesting fact though, the Rebels have been in 33 bowl games, with a winning percentage of 64 which ranks 3rd all-time in teams that have participated in 25 or more bowl games. They're also led by Heisman candidate HB Brandon Bolden who has had an exceptional year with 299 carries, 1770 yards rushing, 18 touchdowns, 5.9 average per carry, 147.5 average yards per game, 17 receptions, 262 yards, 4 receiving touchdowns, and no fumbles! Don't let the Rebels record fool you, they won't be an easy victory and all things aside, this years Gator bowl is sure to be a close one unlike last years.

Nebraska Junior HB Rex Burkhead Wins Heisman

RexBurkheadBreakingTackle.jpg

Burkhead ran over & through defenders all the way to the Heisman Trophy

The 5'11", 210 pound Nebraska Cornhusker Junior HB out of Plano, TX, Rex Burkhead was announced the 2011 Heisman Memorial Trophy winner earlier tonight. Burkhead has led his Huskers with his legs all year long, winning the inaguaral Big Ten Championship in Nebraska's very first season in the Big Ten! With that victory they also stamped their ticket to the National Championship game against rival and former Big 12 foe, the undefeated #1 Oklahoma Sooners.

Rex Burkhead racked up 1804 rushing yards on 315 carries, 18 touchdowns with an average rush of 5.7 yards and 138.8 yards per game.

Runner-Up for the Heisman was TCU's redshirt Junior HB Ed Wesley. Michigan's Junior QB Denard Robinson finished 3rd, Ole Miss Senior HB Brandon Bolden 4th, and Auburn's Sophomore HB Michael Dyer 5th.

Sorry, I accidentally skipped through the voting tally and didn't know you couldn't see them again. I know for next season now hah.

Funny how the C-USA CG had two ranked games and the ACC had none. Not necessarily unrealistic, though. :dunno: Nebraska and Wisconsin could actually be the game this year in real life. I don't think Utah will be the southern representative for the Pac-12 this year; I think it'll probably be SC or ASU.

Yea I had to laugh when I saw those conference championship games. And hell, the National Title might as well be called the Former Big 12 Championship game too haha. I was impressed that Utah did work their first year in the Pac-12. As for the real like southern representative, I think we'll find out if it's USC or my boys Sun Devils Saturday night. Brock Osweiler is the truth man, I can see ASU taking the south this year.

More updates to come periodically through the night...as well as maybe the Bowl game if I have time.

Cool. Looking forward to it.

Btw, who's in the national championship?

College Football Awards: Michigan Walks Away With 4

Ann Arbor, MI (AP) - Junior QB Denard "Shoelace" Robinson may not have walked away with the Heisman Trophy this season, but he didn't leave empty handed. The speedster out of Florida came away with Maxwell Award, which is given to the best football player in the United States (although not as prestigous as the Heisman Trophy of course). Robinson certainly deserved it putting up fantastic numbers this season. Robinson also finished runner up for the Walter Camp (Ole Miss HB Brandon Bolden won) and O'Brien Award (Hawaii QB Bryant Moniz won).

134/285, 2372 Yards, 113 Carries, 773 Yards, 38 Total Touchdowns

Redshirt Senior DE Ryan Van Bergen who broke the Michigan school record for most sacks in a season (with 13.5) a couple weeks back also won, not only one award, but two as he walked away with the Nagurski & Lombardi Awards which recognize the best defensive player and and best defensive lineman/linebacker in the nation respectively.

And last but not least, Senior WR/RET Darryl Stonum returned his way to the Best Returner of the Year award which needs no explanation as to what it's awarded to. Returning for 1188 Kick Return yards, including a touchdown, and 494 punt return yards.

Michigan Tops List of All-Americans

Ann Arbor, MI (AP) - More recognition for the Wolverines was released today with the 2011 All-American teams and All-Conference teams as Michigan leads the All-American team with five players, all on the 1st team (none on the 2nd).

michigan.jpg

Michigan's defensive line has had quarterbacks and offensive lines in fits all year long

Michigan's defensive line has three players as they wrecked havoc on offensive lines all season long leading every team in the nation with 45 total sacks combined. Due to that, both defensive ends redshirt Senior Ryan Van Bergen & Junior Craig Roh, anchored with Senior DT Mike Martin are named 1st Team All-Americans. Also joining them is pleasently surprising Sophomore FS Carvin Johnson in the secondary and Senior WR/RET Darryl Stonum as the teams returner. Also a notable selection is Michigan's backup redshirt Freshman FS Josh Furman who happened to make the Freshman Team. An interesting combo of free safeties to keep your eye on, as they could be leading the secondary of for years to come.

Ole Miss Rebels (7-5) (3-5) vs. #15 Michigan Wolverines (9-3) (5-3)

Late Game Drama? It's Michigan, Of Course
RoyRoundtreeCatch.jpg

Roy Roundtree Goes Off In Gator Bowl

Ann Arbor, MI (AP) - On a chilly and rainy day in Jacksonville, Florida, representing the SEC, the Ole Miss Rebels take on the Big Ten's Michigan Wolverines. As documented before, the Wolverines were in this stadium a year ago to the date, but they certainly wish it was a day they could forget as they took their worst loss in Bowl History to another team from Mississippi, the Mississippi State Bulldogs 52-14. Would those bad memories take away their focus or would they turn it into motivation to perhaps put a beatdown of their own this time?

On the opening kickoff things started with a bang as it appeared the recent Returner of the Year award winner, Senior WR/RET Darryl Stonum fumbled the ball as he went to the ground as it was scooped up and ran in for a quick touchdown for the Rebels. Coach Kleinbauer didn't hesitate to throw out the red flag right away and it became apparent that Stonum's knee was on the ground before the ball came loose, Wolverine ball on a scary moment. Michigan's offense didn't mess a step on their opening drive either as Denard Robinson and Roy Roundtree connection led the majority of the 77 yard, 7 play drive with HB Michael Shaw punching it in from 7 yards out for the first points of the game, 7-0.

Not to be outdone, perhaps with an even more impressive drive, the Rebels offense came out onto the field and seemed to catch the Wolverines defense off guard the whole drive as a 5 play drive, with nothing but passes called, resulted in a 69 yard touchdown drive with redshirt Junior QB Randall Mackey scrambling in untouched for 7 yards capping it off. Michigan's defense seemed to be focused on the exceptional Walter Camp & Walker award winner, Senior HB Brandon Bolden. Game all tied 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Both offense continued to struggle until late in the 2nd quarter before an excellent play call by Ole Miss Head Coach Houston Nutt on 2nd and 10 from their own territory had the wide receiver come in motion into the backfield as Junior SS Jordan Kovacs bit on the fake to the WR and Bolden finally busted one up the middle 54 yards untouched for the touchdown to put the Rebels ahead 14-7 with under 2 minutes remaining. That lead didn't last long though, 2 more plays to be exact as Denard ended up keeping int on a QB option read for 14 yards before lofting up a deep 64 yard bomb to Senior WR Roy Roundtree who was covered by a linebacker for some reason for the touchdown to tie it all back up! Not only did it tie it up, but Denard broke former Michigan QB John Navarre's 2004 season record of touchdown passes of 25, with his 26th touchdown pass! Congratulations to Denard Robinson!

Bigger things at hand now, as the score was just busted wide open as on a 3 play, 75 yard drive, Michigan's defense just looked pathetic as a 29 yard pass from Mackey to Sophomore WR Korvic Neat who beat redshirt Senior CB Troy Woolfolk one on one led to a 21-14 Rebels halftime lead.

Interesting trend in this game, Ole Miss tacked on another field goal very late in the 3rd quarter to put them up 24-14 and on the very first play of the Wolverines next drive they hand it off to Shaw up the middle who runs untouched 62 yards to bring his Wolverines within 3 at the start of the 4th quarter. Whenever one team scores, it seems like the other answers right back immediately. 24-21 Rebels.

Coach Kleinbauer can't be enjoying this, another close game in the 4th quarter. Usually these games come down to the very last drive, which hasn't been in Michigan's favor their past 2 games (Ohio State & Nebraska). Well on Ole Miss' first drive they went on a long 14 play drive that went half the 4th quarter! Luckily for the Wolverines they held them to only a field goal which made the game 27-21. Not so much luck for Michigan on the next drive as Denard attempted a deep bomb to the endzone, but was picked off at the 1 yard line and tackled there giving the Rebels the ball on their own 1 yard line, so not as bad as it could have been. After a quick slant attempt that was incomplete, Mackey handed off to Bolden who hadn't fumbled all year...and what does he do? He gets stripped on the 1 yard line by Michigan's defensive anchor, redshirt Junior MLB Kenny Demens as the ball bounces off a couple of players back into the endzone with a Rebel lineman recovering only to be quickly tackled in the endzone for a safety! 27-23 Rebels with 3:19 remaining in the game.

Seemingly a perfect situation for the Wolverines to capitalize on the momentum shift, their offense once again stalls out around midfield as they have all game long and are forced to punt with a little over 2 minutes remaining in the game with all 3 of their timeouts remaining. Three straight runs to run down the clock by Ole Miss leads to another punt to give Denard one more chance to get his team into the endzone or face harsh criticism of three straight games that the Wolverines seemed incapable of winning.

Starting from his 20 with 1:32 left in the game and 1 timeout remaining, a quick 6 yard pass to Senior WR Junior Hemingway for 6 yards led to a 2nd and 4 before the following play led to a holding penalty that moved them back 10 more yards. Denard rushed for 9 yards up the middle sliding, running the no huddle on 3rd and 5, his pass incomplete to Roundtree. 4th and 5, Robinson comes out in 5-wide drops back, see's no one open and a big hope up the middle as he runs up it for 9 more yards and the first down. Now at their own 49 yard line, another incompletion led to a 2nd and 10 where a fake snap led to an offsides call which Denard saw as he knew he had a free play he just went deep to Roundtree who beat his defender and was wide open hauling in the pass and shaking off one defender before running into the endzone for a 51 yard touchdown putting the Wolverines on top 30-27 with 36 seconds remaining in the game! (I'm aggitated that for some reason that replay isn't available to view...think the penalty had something to do with it)

Surely Michigan fans are getting flashbacks of the Ohio State game where their Wolverines looked as if they had the game won before a disastrous squib kick led to a game winning touchdown for the Buckeyes, well Coach Kleinbauer ended up calling a deep kickoff as the Rebels kneeled it in the endzone with all 3 timeouts left. A 3 yard dump pass here, 4 yard dump pass there, and an incompletion led to a 4th and 4...a HB screen to Bolden as he tried to weeve through defenders before being tackled one yard short of the first down resulting in a turnover on downs as Denard and his Wolverines came out in the victory formation.

Only after the clock struck double zero's did Coach Kleinbauer take his headset off and show a smile shaking his head before his defense drenched him even more in a Gatorade bath as his Michigan Wolverines were Gator Bowl Champions this season, Wolverines win 30-27!
