In comparison to guys with more rings, I will frame the argument in this manner...if you put Manning on Montana's 49ers, running that QB friendly true Bill Walsh WCO with all of those quick drops and easy slants, I have no doubt those teams are just as successful, if not more successful.

Its hard to call him "The Greatest" QB ever. I do think that he is the best QB talent wise to ever play the game, but Greatness entails much more than just having impeccable talent. I make the same Kobe, although i think he is the best basketball player talent wise to play, he just has yet to reach a certain level of "Greatness", give Peyton a few years then come back with this i might be inclined to agree.

Over the hill and without much talent he did a fine job in K.C...with No Rice ,no Taylor , no RB to speak of.....he won a SB in 81.

Montana would do fine with Harrison and Edg James and a wideopen offense with no fear of getting hit , no elite defenses to face , and WRs running against impotent corners and soft cover 2 all day.

Montana had Marcus Allen in KC, along with a very good pass catcher in Kimble Anders, and his WR's were guys like Willie Davis, JJ Birden, and Lake Dawson IIRC. So yeah, no Jerry Rice of Roger Craig, but that's neither here nor there.

I don't want to be put in a position to rip Montana, because he's #2 in my book. I just see Peyton throwing over 70% and putting up stupid numbers in that system with Jerry Rice, and having the benefit of those solid defenses SF always had.

peyton is the GOAT, there is no debate. i am old enough to have seen montana play and while joe cool was super clutch, manning commands the field with the mind of a bill walsh but he can execute like unitas, marino, elway and joe combined. i think if they didnt have teh protection rules peyton would still bet the GOAT. he would just find a way to win withinh that sytem. if the Colts ever had a defense equal to what montana had manning would have 5 rings or more.

The playoff thing is overrated.

As good as Brady has been in the clutch he's also been responsible for one of the biggest collapses in a conference championship game (against Manning), one of the biggest upset losses in SB history, and threw a game sealing INT against the Broncos. Hell some of those old Patriots teams were so good he missed a AFC championship game and still got a ring. If Brady were a little more clutch he could have 5 rings by now.

Roethlisberger put up one of the worst performances ever in a SB and got a ring for it.

Mannings been far from perfect in the playoffs but he never benefited from a defense that could shut down high powered Rams and Indy offenses. He had to deal with Vanderjagt acting a fucking fool out there, and Nick Harper messing up. The one time the D played inspired he won a superbowl. Pointing to the playoffs is the only legit argument against him but I don't think it takes away that much.

Don't mean to be picky, but Johnny U didn't win a Super Bowl. He got hurt in the second quarter and missed the rest of the game, when Morrall came in and won it.


And if you guy's want to talk about championship wins, why leave Bart Starr out of the discussion? He had 7 total championships (2 Super Bowl), and three repeats. Otto Graham did the same, but in lesser competition.

First of all, this is not a rip Tom Brady thread, nor is it a Peyton vs. Brady thread, even though it will definately turn into one. Tom Brady is a fine football player, that is not up for debate. But he isnt Peyton Manning, and quite frankly, nobody is.

I'm not going to post a bunch of stats, either. But i'm sure someone else will. Mannings numbers obviously stack up with anyone, and when he retires, he may end up the leader in all of the significant categories.

Just watch him play....

Peyton Manning has a command over the game that nobody else has ever had. Not Montana, not Elway, not Marino, not Brady. He controls the pace of the game from behind center, in a way nobody else can or ever has. I've watched Colts games where Manning intentionally stalled drives, because he knew his defense was suspect. He's good enough to know that he will score, so he can dictate when he scores. It's an amazing thing to watch.

As far as mechanics go, he's the best. Pinpoint accuracy, great footwork, and he can make any throw.

He's one of the smartest players to ever take the field. He calls his own plays, seemingly always calls the right audible, and he never burns TO's or makes mental errors.

He never gets hurt, either. Not even banged up.

He's reached the Michael Jordan level, where you could resonably give him the MVP every single year. Some of his teams have been very suspect over the years. The Colts seemingly are never able to stop the run, and have years where they can't run the ball at all. They had a K for years who always missed the big kick. It's not hard to imagine the Colts being a 5 or 6 win team certain years, had they not had Manning.

There are good QB's, and there are great QB's, and then you have Peyton Manning. He's one of the 10 best football players ever, appreciate the fact you get to watch him.

I don't know about GOAT yet - I mean, we're talking about Unitas, Graham & Montana. But he is the best QB I've seen since Joe Cool. His command of the offense is sick. He's like Magic Johnson in cleats. He's knows where everyone is supposed to be, and like Magic, he's thinking two plays ahead.

I think Peyton could have a case for GOAT if he continues to produce at the same level for another 5 years. He's definitely a once in a generation player that is very exciting to watch. If you were going to clone a QB for his mechanics, ability and knowledge of the game it would have to be Manning.

I agree on this. IMO often in our society we tend to think of the all-time great guys as people who aren’t currently playing and because of this a guy like Manning gets overlooked. However, Manning is the best QB I’ve seen and IMO when he retires he will be the GOAT. People can point to championships won and rank guys if they want, but IMO this is an extremely over simplistic way to analyze these guys. In a way Manning is like Jordan in that by virtue of their excellence and value to their team every year the MVP award could be given to him and IMO this is saying a lot.

If you really step back and ask yourself "what do I want in a quarterback", I think Peyton Manning fits your exact criteria. It's unfair to look at things like playoff wins and statistics because really, there's a lot more going on around Peyton Manning that effects those two things.

If your ideal quarterback is 6'5", has exceptional football knowledge, outstanding pocket presence and feet in the pocket, a quick release, great touch and timing, great velocity, can read/diagnose a defense with precision and adjust your offense to get in the right play, has unbelievable work ethic, and is constantly motivating and leading your team during practice and in games... you've just described Peyton Manning. I don't know what else you would want in a quarterback.

Lets not forget that you are a Pats fan who more than likely believes Brady is better, because he has won 3 SB.
