Chris: College football is finally here. Welcome to Papa John's Stadium for the Battle of the Governor's Cup between Kentucky (Crowd boos) and Louisville. (Crowd cheers) I know...I know, this is not exactly the quality game you expect on Gameday but give us a break. It's the first week of the season. We won't spend too much time analyzing games today. We'll spend most of our time previewing the upcoming season. So here is how the preseason rankings look to start the season.

Code:
[b][size=+2]Preseason Rankings[/size][/b]

1 Tennessee
2 Notre Dame
3 Penn State
4 LSU
5 UCLA
6 Texas
7 Florida State
8 Ohio State
9 Clemson
[b]10 Oregon State[/b]
11 USC
13 Michigan
14 Nebraska
25 Oregon

And here are some of the early favorites to win the Heisman...

Code:
[b][size=+2]Heisman Watch[/size][/b]

QB Matt Thomas (Nebraska)
QB Joe Davis (Notre Dame)
QB Brad Crenshaw (Texas Tech)
QB Elliott Sharp (Auburn)
WR Ryan Oliver (Texas)

So now it is time to make some predictions that are sure to go wrong. It's time to make the preseason pick of who we think will be in the National Title game. Kirk, you are up first.

Kirk: I have to go with my Buckeyes. They have probably the best defense in the nation this year and I think they get through unscathed where they play Nebraska for the title game. The Cornhuskers are probably the most talented team in the nation but Ohio State wins.

Lee: Come on Kirk. You can't pick your own school. That's not fair. Anyways. There's no way Ohio State gets through the Big Ten undefeated. They might lose to Michigan and they will still have to get by Penn State. Not gonna happen. But you are right about Nebraska. They get through the Big 12 undefeated and play Notre Dame for the championship. Now, I don't think the Irish are that great but they have an easy schedule. They should only be challenged by Michigan and USC, but even USC is not the same team they were. But the Cornhuskers destroy the Irish in the title game.

Chris: Interesting guys. I'm going the same way Lee went but in a different direction. First, I think Corso is right about Notre Dame. As long as they don't have a melt down like they've had each of the last few seasons, they should finish undefeated. I'm going to go out on a limb though with my other team. A bit of a sleeper here. I'm going with Oregon State to finish undefeated. The Pac-10 is not very good at all this year and their non-conference schedule is not very tough at all. People are saying that the Beavs might have one of the best defenses in the nation. Also, don't forget Oregon State only had one loss last year against UCLA in the final minutes. So it is not as crazy as it sounds. However, the Beavs get killed by the Irish in the BCS Championship.

Kirk: You're forgetting that they'll be without Nolen though. There's no way Oregon State replicates the success they had last year. They'll have a great defense but I'm not sure they'll get by USC, UCLA, or Oregon. They have too many holes on offense.

Lee: Kirk, you're just bitter about Oregon State beating your Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl last season. Come on. You can't hold a grudge forever.

Chris: Alright guys. That's enough. I'd like to continue this topic but we've got to make the picks for the game today. The headgear is here so it's time to make your picks.

Lee: Oh that's right, I forgot about this game.

Kirk: These are two teams that will be lucky to be in a bowl game at season's end, but that being said, I look for Kentucky QB Nick Brooks (90ovr) to be the difference maker for the Wildcats as they win handily today. (Crowd boos!)

Lee: Yep. I'm with you Kirk. Kentucky has a 5th year senior QB Nick Brooks (90ovr) and Louisville has a true freshman QB Chris Johnson (72ovr). I think that speaks for itself. I will say that Louisville is a better overall football team but the Cards can't overcome the inexperience they have at QB. Kentucky wins decisively. (Lee puts on the Wildcat headgear as the crowd boos.)

[size=+1]Louisville Rocks Kentucky 46-16[/size]

UK-Lou.jpg

[size=-5]UL QB Chris Johnson played outstanding in his first career game, throwing three touchdowns and only one interception.[/size]

Louisville, KY - Going into the "Battle for the Governor's Cup," it was thought that the outstanding 5th year QB Nick Brooks of the Kentucky Wildcats when lead his team to an easy victory. After all, rival Louisville started a true freshman in his first career start. But it would be the freshman, QB Chris Johnson who played like the senior, and the senior QB who played like the freshman.

From the outset, it did not look good for Kentucky as UL QB Chris Johnson led the Cardinals on a scoring drive on the opening possession, but the extra point would be missed. Kentucky responded with a field goal. Then UK QB Nick Brooks was intercepted, which UL QB Chris Johnson was able to convert on with a 4-yard touchdown pass to his FB to make it 13-3 Louisville at the end of the 1st quarter.

The situation would worsen in the 2nd quarter as UK QB Nick Brooks threw a pick-six to put Louisville further in the lead, up 20-3. Finally, Brooks would connect with his FB for his first touchdown pass to make it 20-10 Louisville. But it was becoming apparent that the Cards were just a better team as UL HB Billy Atkinson was already over the century mark. Louisville would tack on two more field goals to give the Cards a commanding 26-10 lead at halftime.

It looked like Kentucky would get back in the game when HB Ken Morris broke an option run for a 49-yard gain. But it would be all for not when UK QB Nick Brooks was picked off again, leading to another Louisville field goal, 29-10. Then Brooks would be picked off again, but this time it would be returned all the way back for another Cardinal pick-six by CB Aaron Brant to make it 36-10. Later, UL QB Chris Johnson would throw his 3rd touchdown of the game to fellow freshman WR Chaz Sullivan for a 7-yard touchdown to put the Cardinals well out in front 43-10 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

The Cardinal freshman QB would finally make a mistake, throwing his own pick-six, but it would not matter as Louisville rocked Kentucky to take home the Governor's Cup with a 46-16 victory.

Kentucky 16
QB Nick Brooks: 22-33, 239 yds, td, 4 int
HB Ken Morris: 23 car, 139 yds
WR Brandon Kemp: 6 rec, 82 yds
FS Larry Fulton: 13 tkl, 3 tfl

Louisville 46
QB Chris Johnson: 17-27, 182 yds, 3 td, int
HB Billy Atkinson: 14 car, 111 yds (left game in 3rd qtr minor injury)
WR Jonathan Wilson: 5 rec, 38 yds, td
CB Aaron Brant: 5 tkl, tfl, sk, 2 int, defl, td (NCAA def. player of the week)

[size=+1]#16 Texas Tech (0-0) at #23 Virginia (0-0)[/size]

Virginiacheer3.jpg

Chris: Welcome to Charlottesville where we kick off the first real week of the college football season. We've got a pretty good matchup here today for an early non-conference game between Texas Tech and Virginia. (Crowd cheers) So guys...who are you picking today?

Kirk: You know. Texas Tech is really a great football team. Many are picking them to win the Big-12 South and play Nebraska in the Big-12 championship. That is because the Red Raiders have one of the most talented, young QBs that I've seen in a while. That is Brad Crenshaw (90ovr) who is already on the Heisman Watch list as a sophomore. He has a great arm and a great understanding of the spread offense, and picking apart defenses. Tech also has a terrific HB Adrian Cleveland (92ovr), but they tend to only use him as a receiver for the most part. I still don't understand why a back with that kind of talent chose Texas Tech. Anyways, there is no reason to not pick the Red Raiders today, but I have a sneaking feeling that the Cavs will have a gameplan to run the ball behind a pretty good o-line. Crenshaw is still a sophomore so I think this is a trap game for the Red Raiders and the Cavs get them today for the upset. (Crowd cheers)

Lee: Are you crazy Kirk?! There's no way the Cavaliers should win today. Not a chance. Crenshaw is one of the best young QBs I've seen in years. The Red Raiders are better at every position. So that's why I'm going with...(Lee puts on the Cavalier headgear to everybody's surprise and the crowd cheers.)

Kirk: Coach, did you put on the wrong headgear?

Lee: No. I tricked you. I tricked everyone of you! I expect Crenshaw to have a bad game in this environment to start the season. Three interceptions at least and the Cavs' gameplan will pull the upset. Go Virginia!

Houston.png

[size=+1]#10 Oregon State (0-0) at Houston (0-0)[/size]

Houston, TX - At least the Beavers did not start the season off against an FCS team like many of the top 25 teams have, but an early game against Houston is really not that much better. It was a fairly warm afternoon with a game-time temperature of 88 degrees so maybe the heat might even things out between what should have been an uncompetitive game.

Houston's offense looked decent to start the game. Oregon State's highly touted defense did not look like anything special. That was until the Cougars' possession came to an abrupt end when QB Tyrone Austrum threw a duck up over the middle of the field that was intercepted by OSU FS Scott Vinson. However, the Beavers' defense barely had gotten off the field before OSU QB Justin Rust, trying to scramble for yards, fumbled the ball right back to the Cougars. But a tired OSU defense would get its 2nd interception when SS Courtney Smith picked off QB Tyrone Austrum. But the Beavers' offense went three-and-out, giving the ball right back to Houston. However, Houston QB Tyrone Austrum would be picked off again when OSU SS Courtney Smith stepped in front for his 2nd interception. This time Smith was able to take it back the distance for a pick-six to give the Beavers a 7-0 lead.

Hou1.jpg

[size=-5]OSU SS Courtney Smith's 2nd interception of the 1st quarter goes for a pick-six.[/size]

Oregon State's defense would come up big again on Houston's next possession when DE Brandon Webb was able to get his 1st sack of the season, leading to a Cougar three-and-out. But the Beavers responded with a three-and-out of their own as the offense could not find a groove.

To start the 2nd quarter, Oregon State was looking like a team really struggling on offense just as the experts predicted. But the defense was keeping them in the game. The defense continued to make plays as OSU CB Deon Weatherford picked off Austrum. Then Weatherford sped down the sideline, spun past Austrum, and dove across the goal line for another Beaver pick-six to make it 14-0 OSU.

[size=-5]OSU CB Deon Weatherford picks off Houston QB Tyrone Austrum, and spins by the QB before diving across the goal line for another Oregon State pick-six.[/size]

After a Houston three-and-out, OSU QB Justin Rust decided to try and make something happen by throwing to WR Bill Faaeteete who was covered. The result was a Houston interception. With decent field position, Houston QB Tyrone Austrum was able to connect with WR Jamaal Wright where OSU CB Deon Weatherford whiffed on the tackle, allowing Wright to walk into the end zone to make it only 14-7 OSU.

Hou3.jpg

[size=-5]OSU CB Deon Weatherford whiffs on the tackle, allowing Houston WR Jamaal Wright into the end zone.[/size]

Just before halftime, the OSU offense looked like they had something going, but Rust was sacked, forcing another punt as the Beavers took their short lead into the locker rooms for halftime. Many thought Oregon State would struggle on offense but not against a team like Houston. This is a bad sign for the Beavers this season.

Starting in the 3rd quarter, the Beavers appeared to be trying to make a commitment to running the ball more. But after HB Tim Taylor was stuffed for only a few yards and Rust was sacked, Oregon State had to punt again after another three-and-out. But Houston could fair no better against the outstanding Beaver defense as they too were forced to punt. Finally, OSU QB Justin Rust would hit WR Bill Faaeteete on a short slant, but Faaeteete was able to outrun the corner and take it all the way in for a 78-yard touchdown.

Hou4.jpg

[size=-5]OSU WR Bill Faaeteete takes it the distance on a 78-yard touchdown reception.[/size]

Finally, the Beaver offense did something but wait. "Holding on the offense," said the referee. The play was brought all the way back because of a holding on HB Tim Taylor. As a result, the Beavers would be forced to punt after another three-and-out. But Oregon State was fortunate as the Houston punt returner muffed it and the Beavers recovered the football with excellent field position. But even with the field position, the Beavers could do nothing with it as they went three-and-out yet again.

Fortunately for Oregon State, the defense was playing phenomenal as OSU NB Nate Richardson came up with the 5th interception of the game for the Beavers' defense. Finally, the OSU offense took advantage of the opportunity when HB Tim Taylor got to the outside, received a great block from WR Bill Faaeteete, and was met at the front of the end zone by a Cougar defender, but crossed the goal line for a 26-yard touchdown, 21-7 OSU.

Hou5.jpg

[size=-5]OSU HB Tim Taylor with a 26-yard touchdown run.[/size]

By the middle of the 4th quarter, the Cougars had a decent drive going until they found themselves at midfield with 4th-and-1 facing them. Houston HB James McGrady got the handoff and was met in the backfield by OSU OLB Carlos Matthews who brought him down well short of the 1st down.

Hou6.jpg

[size=-5]OSU OLB Carlos Matthews brings down Houston HB James McGrady well short of the 1st down on 4th down.[/size]

The 4th down stop by Matthews effectively nailed this one shut. But OSU HB Tim Taylor would tack on another touchdown on a 1-yard scamper as the Beavers looked unimpressive but still managed to get the 28-7 win because of an outstanding defensive effort.

Charlottesville, VA - Well, Lee Corso could not have been more wrong about last week's game of the week, but this week he was right on the money. On Texas Tech's opening possession, QB Brad Crenshaw marched the Red Raiders into the red zone with ease. But then he was picked off by UVA MLB Kevin Phillips. From this point on, the nightmare began for Crenshaw. Coming into the game, TTU QB Brad Crenshaw (90ovr) was on everybody's Heisman list. The sophomore QB has everything one would want from a QB, but today was just not his day. Maybe it was humid, rainy conditions that effected his passing, but Crenshaw would throw four interceptions and lose two fumbles as he turned over the ball six times. Virginia would get out in front 31-7 by halftime.

On the other side, red shirt freshman QB Tyler Coleman looked like a stud, throwing five touchdown passes, though he did have four interceptions of his own. This one was surprisingly not even close from the beginning as the Cavaliers just blew out Texas Tech 53-17.

[size=+1]#13 Michigan (1-0) at #2 Notre Dame (1-0)[/size]

NotredDamecheer3.jpg

Chris: Welcome to South Bend! Well first off, I have to give it to Corso for his outstanding prediction that Virginia would beat Texas Tech when mostly everybody was picking Tech to win easily.

Kirk: Hey. What about me? I picked the Cavs to win too.

Chris: That's true. You both got it correct. Well, Notre Dame will hope to break the trend of the underdog winning the game of the week against their hated rival Michigan. This is actually a huge game for both teams as neither team should be challenged until much later in the season. Notre Dame should be favored for the rest of their schedule, but then they will have to travel to Los Angeles to take on the Trojans in mid-November. And Michigan should be ranked high going into their rivalry game against Ohio State. So the winner of today's game should be undefeated until they reach their next challenge. But we're really getting ahead of ourselves. First somebody has to win this game. Guys, who are you picking?

Kirk: I know that the elite QBs have not looked so great thus far but today that trend comes to an end. ND QB Joe Davis (96ovr) might be the best QB in the nation. (Crowd cheers as the camera zooms in on "Joe Davis for Heisman" signs in the crowd") And ND HB Tyrone Meade (90ovr) is a great compliment to Davis. These two are the reason many of us are expecting the Irish to have a top offense this year and they are the reason I'm picking Notre Dame to win convincingly today. (Crowd cheers)

Lee: Kirk, you're forgetting about Notre Dame's defense! The Irish are expected to give up a lot of points this year with what many consider a weak defense. Now explain to me how they have a weak defense? When you have two MLBs that will be playing on Sundays next year. ND MLB Jonathan Thompson (99ovr) and MLB George Cannon (95ovr) are tough guys and they're smart football players. With those two in that defense, I think this Irish team is unstoppable. That being said, they will be tested today. Closer than the experts think but the Irish will be victorious. (Lee puts on a Leprechaun hat and hums the Fighting Irish fight song) Go Irish!

Wow! Thanks man. I appreciate it.

Glad to see you still going with this so.... late in the year. Keep up the good work!

Yep. Still going. I'm kind of surprised as you. I just hope I can get this last season finished before 10 comes out.

I'll try to get an update up soon.

[size=+1]#10 Oregon State (1-0) at Minnesota (1-0)[/size]

Minneapolis, MN - After a lackluster effort offensively against Houston, the Beavers would look to get back on track against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Oregon State would continue right where they left off last week defensively, getting an early turnover. Though it was mostly a poor decision by Minnesota QB Steven Britt, who decided to pitch the ball way to late on an option. As a result the ball was knocked down by OSU OLB Cole Alexander for a fumble. Then Alexander alertly scooped up the football and returned it to the house as the Golden Gophers spotted the Beavers a touchdown out of the opening gates, 7-0 OSU.

Min1.jpg

[size=-5]OSU OLB Cole Alexander scoops up the fumble recovery and returns it for an early touchdown.[/size]

The game could not have gotten off to a worse start for the Golden Gophers, but they would find some success on their next possession, scoring a 47-yard field goal to make it 7-3 OSU. The Beavers' opening offensive possession was less than stellar as they went three-and-out. Then Minnesota HB Patrick Johnson on a speed option was able to get to the outside and break a 50-yard gain. Suddenly, Minnesota looked like a dangerous team. Not long after the big run, QB Steven Britt hit WR Anthony Williams in the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown to give Minnesota an unlikely 10-7 lead.

Min2.jpg

[size=-5]Minnsota WR Anthony Williams gives the Golden Gophers the lead with a 14-yard touchdown reception.[/size]

As the 1st quarter was coming to an end, it was looking like the Oregon State offense was waking up from its slumber. Early in the 2nd quarter, OSU QB Justin Rust would finish off the best drive of the season thus far with a strike in the corner of the end zone to third-year sophomore WR David Baker for a 3-yard touchdown to put the Beavers back on top 14-10.

Min3.jpg

[size=-5]OSU WR David Baker with his first career touchdown in the corner of the end zone.[/size]

But Minnesota was still in the game and managed to kick a 44-yard field goal to keep the score close, 14-13 OSU. On the ensuing possession for the Beavers, Rust was able to lead the offense into the red zone. However when Rust tried to connect with WR Brian Horn in the end zone, Minnesota FS Jimmy Schroeder was able to come up with the interception. Fortunately, the OSU defense held strong, and forced the Gophers to punt from their own end zone. Beaver QB Justin Rust led his team right back into the red zone. This time HB Tim Taylor on a toss was able to get to the outside, juked past a defender, and was in with a 13-yard touchdown scamper to put Oregon State up 21-13.

Min4.jpg

[size=-5]OSU HB Tim Taylor with a 13-yard touchdown scamper.[/size]

Neither team would manage to move the ball with any success in the closing minutes of the 2nd quarter. Minnesota was still in the game at halftime.

Oregon State opened the 3rd quarter with a fantastic, balanced drive, finished with a 1-yard touchdown run for Tim Taylor, who was able to get across the goal line, taking some punishment on his way in. Now the Beavers were starting to finally turn it on as they were now out in front 28-13.

Min5.jpg

[size=-5]OSU HB Tim Taylor gets across the goal line for a 1-yard touchdown run.[/size]

Minnesota would respond with an unimpressive three-and-out. Oregon State now had a chance to put the game away. OSU QB Justin Rust was starting to feel confident, but then he threw a wildly inaccurate pass over the middle of the field that was intercepted by Minn FS Jimmy Schroeder again for his 2nd interception of the game. However, the Golden Gophers could not move the ball against the Beaver defense, and were forced to punt after another three-and-out.

Finally, Rust on a playaction threw to a wide open TE Adam Banks near the sideline. Banks caught the high arching pass over his shoulders, and ran as fast as he could. The Minnesota defenders were not going to catch him, and Banks housed it for a 63-yard touchdown reception, giving the Beavers a 35-13 lead.

Then on the ensuing possession, a confident Justin Rust threw deep again. This time, to fourth-year junior WR Brian Horn, who came down with the ball in stride. Then the strong receiver was able to shake off a tackling attempt at his legs, and sped into the end zone for a huge 71-yard touchdown reception. Just like that, Oregon State was up 42-13 going into the 4th quarter. It appeared that the offense had broken out of its slump.

Oregon State was now in command and would close this one out 49-13 as HB Tim Taylor would get his 3rd touchdown with another 1-yard goal line scamper. It was clear that OSU head coach Mike Riley decided to give QB Justin Rust some more opportunities to make plays by opening up the offense and it paid off. Rust is looking more poised and starting to gain confidence with his new receivers, Brian Horn and David Baker. If the offense can continue with that kind of success, this could be a very dangerous Beaver team this season for anybody.

[size=+1](2)Notre Dame with a Dominant 26-10 Win Over Rival (13)Michigan[/size]
Mich-ND.jpg

[size=-5]ND MLB George Cannon's fumble recovery for a touchdown put this game away for the Irish in the 4th quarter.[/size]

South Bend, IN - It had the feel of one of the old fashioned low scoring games these two rivals used to play in the past. The rainy conditions only helped to add to the atmosphere. For a team that was supposed to have a weak defense, the Irish looked pretty dominant defensively. The Irish struck first on their opening possession when backup HB Calvin Riley broke a 41-yard touchdown run to put Notre Dame on top 7-0. On the ensuing possession for Notre Dame, the Irish would tack on a field goal to make it 10-0. Michigan looked like they would cut into the lead but QB Ryan Sims was picked off in the red zone.

The Wolverines would miss two long field goals of 53 yards and 40 yards in the 2nd quarter. ND QB Joe Davis was not the superstar that many in the media have been proclaiming in the preseason as he struggled to find a rhythm, throwing an interception of his own that would set up a Michigan 18-yard field goal just before the end of the half to make it 10-3 Notre Dame.

The Irish found some success to start the 3rd quarter with a long 18-play drive, but could only settle for a 25-yard field goal to put Notre Dame ahead 13-3. Both QBs continued to struggle as they threw back-to-back interceptions just as the 3rd quarter came to an end.

The Irish would miss a chance to increase the lead when a 42-yard field goal attempt went off the upright. But a third interception thrown by Michigan QB Ryan Sims would set up a ND 44-yard field goal that went through the uprights, 16-3 Notre Dame. The play that put the game away for the Irish was when Michigan QB Ryan Sims was drilled on an option play by ND freshman DE Early Woods. The ball fell to the ground and MLB George Cannon scooped it up and returned it to the house, putting the Irish ahead 23-3 with very little time remaining in the game. It would not be until with 1:38 on the clock, Michigan HB Kevin Fox would score a 2-yard touchdown run to make it a respectable 26-10 loss for the Wolverines. The Fighting Irish are now sitting pretty until they meet up with USC.

Volcheer2.jpg

Chris: Welcome to the home of the reigning national champions, the Tennessee Volunteers. (Crowd goes nuts) We are coming to you from Knoxville for the biggest game of the year so far between two SEC rivals, Florida (Crowd boos) and Tennessee. (Crowd cheers) The last time Tennessee lost a game was against the Gators last year very early in the season down in "the Swamp," but it did not keep the Vols out of the BCS championship game. Now Tennessee will try to show the nation that they are still ready to make another run to perhaps make it back-to-back. (Crowd cheers more)

The season is starting to heat up. We had the Irish really just dominate what might be a fairly good Michigan team last week. So that was one of the first games that will help give us a better picture of what the national picture is going to look like. There is another intriguing non-conference matchup taking place in the home of the team that lost to these Vols in the BCS championship. Down in Happy Valley, the #23 Oregon Ducks have traveled all the way from Eugene to face #3 Penn State so we have some good games this weekend as the season starts to heat up.

[size=+1]Other Game of the Week[/size]

#23 Oregon at #3 Penn State
Kirk: PSU Lee: PSU

Chris: Well, no surprises there. The Nittany Lions should be huge favorites especially at home. Alright, the headgear is here guys. It's time to make your picks.

Kirk: I know that the Vols are the defending national champions and are currently ranked #1 in the nation but I have to side with Florida today. The Gators are just too explosive on offense especially at HB with Jerry Davis (95 ovr) and Ken Marshall (96 ovr). Plus, a fantastic WR Jeff Hughes (94 ovr). Too much speed on the offensive side of the ball for Tennessee to contain. That, and I just think that the Gators have Tennessee's number. (Crowd boos)

Lee: Look at that Kirk. You got this crowd against you, but you're right Kirk. Florida is very explosive on offense and you did not even mention their defense. Those two safeties are fantastic. (both 95 ovr) But there is just something about this Tennessee team. First of all, the Vols have two incredible DTs. (both 91 ovr) And their HB Michael Washington (92 ovr) is a perfect fit for an offense that runs behind behmouths like OT Robert Minocchi (99 ovr). I think this will be very close today. (Lee starts doing the "Gator Chomp" as the crowd boos) Ehhhh! Forget about it! (Lee puts on the Smokey headgear and those boos turn to cheers) Go Tennessee!

FLA-Tenn-1.jpg

[size=-5]Vol DT JT Dahl returns a fumble recovery for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage.[/size]

Knoxville, TN - The game might very well have been decided on the first play from scrimmage when Florida QB Dylan Smith found himself under pressure. Worse than just taking a sack, Smith was stripped of the ball by Tennessee DT Curtis Brown. The ball fell to the turf and Vol DT JT Dahl scooped it up and rumbled, bumbled, and stumbled is way to the house, giving Tennessee a 7-0 lead right off the bat. Then Smith would throw an interception which would set up a Tennessee 51-yard field goal that sailed through the uprights. Later, Tennessee would score a touchdown when backup HB Doug Hunter scored on a 2-yard toss to make it 17-0 Volunteers.

But Florida would storm back, cutting the lead to 17-13 when WR Jack Hancock scored on a 3-yard jet sweep. But Florida QB Dylan Smith would be picked off again. As a result, Vol QB Andy Jones would hook up with WR Steve Hendrix in tight coverage on a 2-yard touchdown to put Tennessee up 24-13. However, Florida would be able to get a last second field goal in the closing seconds of the 1st half to make it 24-16 Tennessee.

Late in the 3rd quarter, Florida HB Jerry Davis would squirt out of a pile and take it all the way for a 44-yard touchdown run, closing the Tennessee lead to only 27-23. But Tennessee in the 4th quarter started using the clock to its advantage as HB Michael Washington continued to pound the rock. Finally, after a long drive, the Vols took a seven-point lead off of a 33-yard field goal; 30-23 Tennessee. But Florida could not make the plays when they needed. And Tennessee would mount another long drive. This time QB Andy Jones would hit WR Steve Hendrix for a 4-yard touchdown with 1:06 remaining to effectively end the game 37-23.
