Week 6

(9)LSU Holds on 38-31 to Defeat (7)Florida in Death Valley
FLA-LSU.jpg

LSU freshman CB David Bell had an unbelievable performance. The true freshman corner showed why LSU had the top class this offseason as he had two interceptions and two forced fumbles to become the NCAA Defensive Player of the Week.

Baton Rouge, LA - Florida QB Kyler Thomas underestimated LSU's young secondary to his own peril. When freshman LSU CB Hunter Webb picked off Thomas for a pick-six to make it 10-3 going into the second quarter, the Gators knew they had another tough SEC game on their hands. The Gators would tie the game in the second quarter when Thomas connected with WR Kurt Howard tie the game 10-10. Then Gator HB Ken Marshall went down with a pulled hamstring that is going to sideline the Heiman contending HB for three weeks. It proved to be a bad omen as the Tigers scored 28 unanswered points to get out in front to a 38-10 lead going into the fourth quarter.

A lot of the Tigers' success had to be attributed to the two outstanding freshman CBs, Hunter Webb and David Bell. Coming into the game, it was thought that Florida's receivers and QB Kyler Thomas had a large mismatch on their hands and would exploit it to a Florida win. Well, there was a mismatch alright, but it was the Gator receivers trying to get open against what has to now be considered one of the best secondaries in not only the SEC, but in the nation. The supposed best QB in the nation, Kyler Thomas struggled all game long, throwing four interceptions.

However, the Gators unbelievably went on a scoring tear in the fourth quarter. QB Kyler Thomas would connect with WR Jeff Hughes for a 45-yard touchdown. Then Florida HB Jerry Davis would break loose for an 80-yard touchdown run to quickly make it 38-24. Next, LSU QB Lance Porter would make his only mistake of the game to picked off by Gator OLB Josh Armstrong. The Tigers would stop the Gators, but on fourth-and-goal, Thomas would hit TE Nathan Love to make it a one possession lead as they were astonishingly only down 38-31 with 2:29 left. But LSU would finally put the game away with a long drive where HB Scott Richardson kept the chains moving as the Tigers now are at the head of the class in the SEC.

FSUfabiola72.jpg

Chris: We are here live in Tallahassee for the big rivalry game between Miami and Florida State. This rivalry does not have the same pizzazz as yester-year but today's game will remind many of those classis games from the past. Both come in with undefeated records. Nobody is surprised by the 'Noles though as they have some serious talent. But the 'Canes have been a huge surprise. New head coach Jon Gruden installed a spread offense similar to Texas Tech and already the new look offense has paid off. When Miami was able to upset the Ohio State to become serious contenders already. Speaking of the Buckeyes, they have a big game in Madison against the Wisconsin Badgers. The winner of the game will put themselves in position to challenge for the Big Ten title. When we get back we'll look at these two games but a bunch of other matchups across the nation...

Other Game of the Week

#9 Ohio State at #14 Wisconsin
Kirk: Wisc Lee: OSU

Chris: Alright guys, we turn now to the big one here today in Tallahassee. (crowd cheers) There have been reports that FSU QB Joe Finnerty might be able to come back sometime in the near future but we hear that Erin Andrews has a report on the issue. Erin...

ErinAndrewspic1.jpg

Erin: Unfortunately, it is not the news that Seminole fans want to hear. Head coach Jimbo Fisher wanted to dispell all of the rumors that Finnerty might come back to play this season. Fisher definitively told me that Finnerty's season is over. There is no chance that he will play this year and since he is a fifth year senior, he will not play another collegiate football game. But on the bright side, the 'Noles are in good hands with fifth year senior QB Jason Johnson who threw threw six touchdowns last week against Wake Forest and with the talent that FSU has at WR Fisher is optimistic about the season. Guys...

Chris: Thanks Erin. Well, that's not good news but with all of the rumors floating around on the internet it's good that Fisher is letting the truth be known. So what do you think about Miami's chances to pull off another upset?

Kirk: If Miami is going to win today, they will have to rely on the arm of fourth year junior QB Jovon Wise, who already has nearly 1700 yards, 17 touchdowns and only five interceptions. He is really the reason for the 'Canes' success. In reality, his success should be attributed to the system that Gruden is running. There really is nothing spectacular about Wise. He would be better in a run-first spread but so far what he has done has worked. That comes to an end today. Miami is in for a real shock today when they see the defense they will face. I say the 'Noles win big today. (crowd cheers)

Lee: This is really great, Kirk, to see all of the anticipation for the Miami-Florida State game again. But you're right. The Noles are really good. I mean really good sweetheart. That FS Paris Greene (99 ovr). What an athlete they have there. Wise better not throw in his direction. Then on the offensive side of the ball, they have HB Barry Horn, who ran for over 1500 yards last year. Oh by the way, the 'Noles have maybe the best receiver combo in the nation. Each one of those guys will see NFL action. On top of all that, the 'Noles have one of the best offensive lines in the nation too. Come on. No contest. There's going to be a lot of scoring today. Unfortunately, for Miami, FSU is going to be doing all of the scoring. (Lee puts on the Seminole headgear as he does the warchant with the crowd) Go 'Noles! Go Florida State!

Oregon State QB Justin Rust Out 2-3 Weeks

QBPhilRogersSanRafaelCA.jpg

OSU QB Justin Rust (left) OSU QB Phil Rogers (right)

Corvallis, OR - The Beavers found out officially that fourth year QB Justin Rust will be out 2-3 weeks. Rust suffered a bruised shoulder at the end of the third quarter this past weekend against UCLA. He has looked pretty good, going 92-133 for 1200 yards, has thrown 12 touchdowns, and has only seven interceptions. Oregon State has a badly needed bye to get fifth year senior QB Phil Rogers up to speed as he will have his first career start against Cal in Berkeley. Rogers has a lot more mobility so look for Mike Riley to adjust the gameplan to allow Rogers to make plays outside the pocket. It is possible we might even see the Beavers run some option plays. Rogers has pretty good quickness and at 6'5", 224 pounds, he is a load to bring down. But Rogers does not possess the passing ability or knowledge of the offense that Rust has.

Mia-FSU.jpg

FSU HB Barry Horn spins past the Miami defense en route to a 39-yard touchdown run.

Tallahassee, FL - There was a lot of anticipation for the Miami-Florida State game but the Seminoles had this game won from the word go. It might have been the humid, wet conditions or the FSU homefield advantage that hurt the Hurricanes' chances to win the game. Mostly, it was just that the 'Noles are really good. There had been growing excitement for new Miami head coach Jon Gruden's new spread offense as the Hurricanes have had one of the top offenses in the nation. That was until today. Miami's QB Javon Wise came into the game with 17 touchdown passes and nearly 1700 yards. Well, Wise finished today's game with a lowly 79 yards through the air and a miserable four interceptions. Miami's offense could not do anything against the talented FSU defense and the weather certainly did not help. There were many dropped balls by both teams. It was probably the most one-sided performance of any game of the week in a long time. The Seminoles dominated every aspect of the game. From this point on, Florida State will be a serious contender to be in the BCS championship.

#1 Clemson at #21 Virginia Tech

#19 Oregon State at #25 Cal

Chris: Wow, I still can't get over how you could pick the Hokies today especially if Concepcion can't go today. Speaking of QBs that can't go today, Oregon State's QB Justin Rust will sit out today because of a bruised shoulder. Why do I mention that? Because the Oregon State-Cal game is next on the list to preview.

Kirk: Nice segway there.

Chris: That's what I get the big bucks for. So anyways, both the Beavers and the Golden Bears suffered their first losses a couple weeks ago. Let's play back the tape here...
"Not only will the Beavers have no trouble winning today but I'm going to say it here first. The Beavers will win the Pac-10."
Those were the words of Lee Corso two weeks ago not only predicting Oregon State to beat UCLA, which they lost by the way, but to also win the Pac-10. We'll see what Corso has to say about that but first, Kirk, what do you think about the game today?

Kirk: You know. I really don't know what to make of this game or this conference for that matter. You might look at the polls and see three Pac-10 teams in the top ten, but I see a very average conference from top to bottom. I mean Washington State is 3-2 and just beat Arizona State and we already saw Steve Sarkisian's Arizona Wildcats nearly pull the upset over USC. But I'm going to go with the Beavers today. Oregon State is just too talented from top to bottom and I'm not really high on Cal this year. The loss to Oregon I think really exposed the Golden Bears because I don't really think the Ducks are that great either. So I'm going with the Beavers not because I think they're great but I think they're better than Cal.

Lee: Alright. So the Beavers let me down a couple weeks ago against UCLA. But my prediction could still come true. But Kirk, you're right. The Pac-10 is very average. That is the reason I thought the Beavers had a chance to do it. They still could but it going to be tough since they have to still play USC and Oregon on the road. And let's not forget about this game today. I think this will be much closer than the experts think today. And don't forget Oregon State is starting a fifth year senior QB Phil Rogers who has never started. But I think Oregon State beats Cal today.

Chris: I don't know guys. I think you still have caught the Beaver fever. I think Cal is tough to play in Berkeley. Well, that brings us to the game we have here in Baton Rouge. (Crowd comes to life after the inconcequential talk about the Pac-10) LSU has moved to the head of the class in the SEC with their huge win a couple weeks ago over Florida. (Crowd cheers) While Auburn nearly also was able to beat Florida a couple weeks before. So these are two very good SEC teams with a lot on the line here today. So guys, who are you picking today?

Kirk: After what I saw two weeks ago when LSU defeated Florida, I see no reason why LSU would not win today. (Crowd goes wild) They have really put all the pieces together. The freshmen corners have really stepped up and I think that the Bayou Bengals are serious contenders to be in the BCS National Championship at the end. (Crowd goes nuts)

Lee: Everybody is all over LSU with the huge win over Florida. And as well as they should be. But don't sleep on Auburn. They're good too, boy. But with this fantastic crowd. Kirk, Chris, this is one of my favorite places to come watch a football game. Look at these crazy fans. (Crowd goes bananas) You're right Kirk. LSU QB Lance Porter and HB Scott Richardson have really played well, and that defense has been outstanding. You'd have to be crazy to pick against LSU today, so obviously that's why I'm going with the Tigers! (Crowd goes freakin' nuts)...No! Not those Tigers! These Tigers! (Lee puts on the Aubie headgear as the crowd boos hysterically) Go Auburn!

#19 Oregon State (4-1) at #25 Cal (4-1)

Berkeley, CA - The Cal faithful really showed up strong for this important conference game that surprisingly was only broadcasted regionally on FSN. It would be the Beavers' chance to get back on track after a loss to undefeated UCLA. For Cal, it would be an opportunity to prove to the nation that they are for real after losing to Oregon a couple weeks ago. Now that the Ducks had lost to Washington State just hours earlier, that loss hurts the Golden Bears.

Cal came out looking pretty good offensively, but OSU DT Mark Crum was able to bring the drive to an end with a sack on third down to force a punt. But OSU QB Phil Rogers' first career start did not get off to a very good start as the Beavers went three and out. The Golden Bears would get in position to attempt a 52-yard field goal on their next possession but the attempt was not even close. Finally, on a third-and-short for the Beavers, Rogers scrambled to the outside on an option. Just as he was about to be hit, he pitched the ball to backup HB Tim Taylor who made an excellent play to snag the ball that was behind him. Then Taylor turned on the jets toward the sideline and took it to the house for a 43-yard touchdown to put Oregon State on top 7-0.

Cal would go three and out on the ensuing possession. Then OSU QB Phil Rogers would roll out and throw deep to WR Brian Herring on a long crossing pattern in tight coverage. Herring somehow was able to come down with it for a 37-yard gain to bring the first quarter to an end. However, Oregon State could only get a field goal opportunity out of the big play through the air. But OSU kicker Reggie Smith kicked the 36-yard attempt wide right.

The Bears would respond with a very methodical drive, including a fourth down conversion in the red zone. Finally, Cal HB Jon Nelson was able to fight his way across the goal line for a 3-yard touchdown to tie the game 7-7.

Cal2.jpg

Cal HB Jon Nelson with a 3-yard touchdown run.

The Beavers countered back though with probably one of the best looking drives all season. It would be capped off when HB Roy Nolen spun through a hole, broke a tackle, and scored on an 8-yard scamper to put Oregon State back in front 14-7.

Cal3.jpg

OSU HB Roy Nolen with an 8-yard touchdown scamper.

However, after a facemask against OSU on the kick return and a pass interference against OSU SS Courtney Smith, Cal found itself at the OSU 40-yard line and quickly the Golden Bears were inside the red zone. Where QB Sam Russell rolled out and found a wide open HB Jon Nelson in the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown to tie the game back up 14-14.

Cal4.jpg

Cal QB Sam Russell rolls out and finds HB Jon Nelson for a 3-yard touchdown.

Now the Cal faithful were really into the game and the noise seemed to be affecting OSU QB Phil Rogers. It may have been the reason that Rogers tried to throw to TE Adam Banks in the flat, but the ball was thrown behind him. Allowing Cal CB David Booth to make the interception. But the OSU defense stepped it up and forced Cal to punt. The Beavers would have the ball back with 1:19 left in the first half. But after a deep attempt to WR Brian Herring which was broken up, the fist half came to an end all tie up 14-14.

To start the second half, on third down OSU QB Phil Rogers threw over the middle to WR Brian Herring who made the catch but was absolutely lit up. Herring would leave the game with a PCL strain but would make his way back on the field by the fourth quarter. To make matters worse, after the chain gang came out to measure, the Beavers were short of the first down and had to punt. But Cal could not do any better as they had to punt after their own three and out. Oregon State would get in position to take the lead with a 55-yard field goal attempt but kicker Reggie Smith just came up short off the cross bar. But then Cal QB Sam Russell made his first mistake of the game as OSU CB Matt McDaniel picked him off and then dodged a tackle on his way for a pick-six to give Oregon State the lead 21-14.

Cal5.jpg

OSU CB Matt McDaniel dodges a tackle to return the interception for a touchdown.

The momentum was now fully in the hands of the Beavers and Cal would be forced to punt again. It looked like the Beavers were really hitting their stride now as HB Roy Nolen broke loose for a 33-yard gain. Next, QB Phil Rogers threw to HB Tim Taylor in the flat for another 33-yard gain to put the Beavers in the red zone. It was not looking good for the Bears until disaster struck for the the Beavers. Rogers made a terrible mistake, throwing to WR Alex Whitehead when he had no business doing so. Whitehead was blanketed by coverage. The ball was deflected in the air where Cal CB Mark Stewart came down with the interception. Then Stewart was off to the races. Only QB Phil Rogers was there to try to make a tackle but Stewart made a nice spin move to dodge the tackle and took it all the way back for a timely pick-six. Memorial Stadium ignited back to life as the Bears had just tie the game, 21-21 after it looked like they would be down by 14 points just a few seconds earlier.

Cal6.jpg

Cal CB Mark Steward has no trouble getting by OSU QB Phil Rogers for a timely pick-six.

So after the costly pick-six thrown by Rogers, the Beavers looked like a team that was destined to lose. That was until OSU CB John Biggers on the ensuing kickoff just exploded through a gap and was gone for an 84-yard touchdown to put Oregon State back on top 28-21 and silencing Memorial Stadium just before the third quarter ended.

Cal7.jpg

OSU CB John Biggers explodes for an 84-yard kick return.

It was not looking good for Cal now and QB Sam Russell would make matters worse when he badly overthrew a deep ball that OSU SS Courtney Smith easily picked off. Then OSU put a well executed drive together that would get the Beavers back in the red zone. Where QB Phil Rogers, unable to find anybody open decided to scramble and was able to bull his way across the goal line on a 7-yard touchdown run to make it 35-21 OSU.

Cal8.jpg

OSU QB Phil Rogers bulls his way in for a 7-yard touchdown.

The touchdown run by Rogers seemed to be the last straw that broke the camel's back as OSU CB John Biggers would get an interception off of a deflection which would set up a 5-yard touchdown scamper for HB Roy Nolen to put this one away with a 42-21 win. The Beavers will travel to Pullman next week to take on the surprising Washington State Cougars. The Cougs are coming off a shutout win over the Ducks in Autzen after previously upsetting Arizona State so the Beavers better be on alert.

LSU HB Scott Richardson had a monster game, going for 297 yards and four touchdowns to be named the NCAA offensive player of the week.

Baton Rouge, LA - Death Valley was fired up from the start for this major SEC battle. LSU HB Scott Richardson on the second possession for the Bayou Bengals broke off an 80-yard touchdown scamper to further fuel the crowd. But Richardson was not done there as he would break off a 60-yard touchdown run to put him well over 100 yards in the first quarter. Richardson would amass an astonishing 297 yards on the ground and score four touchdowns on the night. But despite the incredible performance by Richardson, Auburn was able to stay in the game. In the end though, Auburn QB Elliott Sharp's four interceptions did them in as the War Eagles had many opportunities to get back in the game but the turnovers proved to be too much. LSU is looking like a mighty tough team to beat.

GeorgiaTechsplashHistory.jpg

Chris: We are here in Atlanta for a special Thursday night edition of College Gameday as the top ranked Clemson Tigers will put their 22-game winning string in jeopardy as they face off against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. (Crowd cheers) The Jackets have been a bit of a surprise this year considering that QB Jaybo Shaw, who had a phenomenal year last season graduated. But QB Kenny Waller and sophomore HB Roger Andrews have led the nation's second best rush offense to an undefeated season thus far. (Crowd cheers) They will be tested against the defending national champions, the Clemson Tigers who also have a new signal caller from last year as QB Kyle Parker is now learning an NFL playbook. But Clemson has cruised right along fine without him. Though Clemson was tested last week as they were barely able to pull it out against Virginia Tech so the Jackets have some confidence that they can pull off the upset. So when we come back we'll preview some other games around the nation this weekend and make our picks...

Games of the Week

#19 Auburn at #24 Georgia
Kirk: Aub Lee: Aub

#12 Nebraska at #3 Texas
Kirk: Neb Lee: Tex

Chris: Alright, so we got this little game here in Atlanta to talk about now. (Crowd cheers) Well, the ACC is quickly becoming the best conference in the nation now. There are three undefeated teams in the top ten and a few other one-loss teams that look very good also. If Georgia Tech can beat Clemson tonight, it could really propel them to be in position to play for the ACC title and maybe even a national championship. But unfortunately last week, the Jackets did suffer an injury to QB Kenny Waller when he suffered a concussion. Erin Andrews has more on that subject for us...

ErinAndrewspic2.jpg

Erin: It looks like that unfortunately for Georgia Tech that Waller will not play tonight and is likely to miss next week also with what the trainers are calling a mild concussion. So that will leave big arm true freshman QB Josh Gibson to do the signal calling for the Jackets. Chris, back to you...

Chris: Thanks Erin. Well, that is unfortunate news for the Yellow Jackets. So how does that affect Tech's chances today?

Kirk: I think it does affect them as Waller gives you more mobility than Gibson, but it won't really matter because the sophomore HB Roger Andrews will just have to play a bigger part. This guy is really fast and with that run option offense and a very good offensive line, he gets many opportunities to run in the open field. Andrews will really make a name for himself tonight. The nation will also be surprised at how well the Jackets play defense tonight as they are ranked 5th in total defense behind a great MLB Hayden Charles. I look for the Yellow Jackets to pull the upset tonight but it will be a great game. (Crowd cheers)

Lee: Nice pick Kirk. I really love the Tech offense. It runs like a well oiled machine but they are going up against what I think is the most underrated defense in college football. Clemson has two outstanding LBs by the names of Cannon and Griffin. These guys are tough and Georgia Tech is going find it difficult to run on Clemson. And Clemson's offense has looked fantastic and very balanced. QB Marcus Bates is very mobile and has a good arm. He's only thrown one interception and has 14 touchdown passes. That's not bad, and HB Joey Thomas is very good too. This is going to be close. (Crowd gets ancy) Calm down sweethearts. I'll make my pick...(Lee puts on the Tiger headgear as the crowd boos the pick)

Washington State (4-2)

Pullman, WA - The Cougars of Washington State have to be the most surprising team of the Pac-10. After upsetting Oregon at Autzen Stadium and previously upsetting Arizona State, the Cougs must be feeling confident. But now Wazzu would try and tackle another top 25 opponent in the Beavers who after falling to currently undefeated UCLA, was able to beat Cal pretty convincingly. There has been a lot of talk all week about this one in the Pacific Northwest as the game today will tell a lot about just how good both teams are. Even many of national pundits had put Oregon State on upset alert today. There was some good news for Oregon State as QB Justin Rust was able to start today as the shoulder has felt a lot better.

Washington State looked horrible on their opening possession. In fact, they looked so bad, it was hard to fathom how they could have beaten the Ducks just last week. It was clear that the Beavers were not taking the Cougars lightly as a slow moving drive was finished off with HB Roy Nolen crossing the goal line for a 2-yard touchdown to put OSU in front 7-0.

Wazzu continued to struggle on offense. Then OSU QB Justin Rust proved that the shoulder really was fine when he threw a high arching pass to WR Brian Herring in single coverage. Herring came down with it and walked into the end zone for a 31-yard touchdown reception to put OSU ahead 14-0.

WSU1.jpg

OSU WR Brian Herring comes down with the deep ball from Rust for a 31-yard touchdown reception.

The Cougars looked completely inferior to the Beavers' defense as they again went three and out. Next, OSU came out with a four receiver set and QB Justin Rust called a brilliant audible that led to HB Roy Nolen exploding through a gaping hole and housing a 55-yard touchdown scamper to make it a 21-0 lead for Oregon State going into the second quarter.

WSU2.jpg

OSU HB Roy Nolen with a gaping hole for an easy 55-yard touchdown scamper.

Finally, Washington State got on the scoreboard with a 49-yard field goal to make it 21-3 OSU. But the Beavers countered right back with another scoring drive ended with QB Justin Rust finding HB Tim Taylor in the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown reception to put OSU out in front 28-3.

Wazzu would get back in position to try another field goal on their next possession. This time it was from 53 yards away and it was well off the mark. OSU QB Justin Rust responded by hitting TE Adam Banks on an out route. Banks was able to run through a tackle and was not brought down until he had gained 51 yards. Next, Rust found WR Brian Herring over the middle where the the big play receiver fought forward through two Wazzu defenders until he had crossed the goal line for a 13-yard touchdown reception. With that touchdown, Herring had broken the school record for most career touchdown receptions with that being his 21 touchdown reception. The Beavers were now up big 35-3.

WSU4.jpg

OSU WR Brian Herring sets the school record for career touchdown receptions with his 21st touchdown.

Cougar fans finally had something to cheer for when QB Kyle Hamilton threw up a prayer which WR Clayton Ramirez leaped up to make the catch. Then Hamilton broke loose for a 63-yard touchdown as the OSU secondary made a rare mistake in coverage. But Washington State was still trailed 35-10 going into halftime.

WSU5.jpg

Wazzu WR Clayton Ramirez with a leaping catch and then breaking loose for a 63-yard touchdown reception.

Oregon State continued right where they left off to start the second half as QB Justin Rust found an open WR Bill Faaeteete over the middle for a 15-yard touchdown to make it 42-10 OSU.

WSU6.jpg

OSU WR Bill Faaeteete left wide open for a 15-yard touchdown over the middle.

Later, OSU QB Justin Rust would throw to HB Roy Nolen in the flat who had so much green in front of him with only one defender standing between him and the endzone. The lone Wazzu defender never stood a chance as Nolen spun past him for a 32-yard touchdown reception to make it 49-10 OSU as the third quarter came to an end. It also gave Rust his fifth toucdhown of the game. Not a bad way to come back from an injury.

WSU7.jpg

OSU HB Roy Nolen spins by the lone Wazzu defender for a 32-yard touchdown reception.

The final OSU touchdown by Nolen off of his highlight spin move was the signal to the Cougar fans that it was time for them to go as many headed to the parking lots. Mike Riley put in the bench players for the fourth quarter as it was officially a blowout. Washington State never stood a chance in this one as Oregon State cruised to a 49-10 dismantling of the Cougars. It is unbelievable that Oregon was shutout just last week by this same Cougar team.

Oregon State 49
QB Justin Rust: 16-19, 283 yds, 5 td
HB Roy Nolen: 22 car, 180 yds, 2 td, rec, 32 yds, rec td (Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Week)
WR Brian Herring: 3 rec, 70 yds, 2 td (Oregon State record for career touchdown receptions)
DE Brandon Webb: 2 tkl, tfl, sk

Washington State 10
QB Kyle Hamilton: 17-27, 176 yds, td
HB Johnny Mullins: 15 car, 83 yds
WR Clayton Ramirez: 3 rec, 85 yds, td
DE Johnny Jones: 3 tkl, 2 tfl, 2 sk, defl

Maybe. I've been trying different slider sets that I think have been working to make it as realistic as I can make it. I've never really been able to do much about the interceptions but there were none in the last game. I'm convinced that putting knockdowns to zero, decreases the chances of an interception from what I've tested. Washington State really is terrible though. They're rated a C- overall. I have no idea how the simulations allowed them to beat ASU and Oregon. Next up is 1-6 Standord who is rated a C overall so expect a similar outcome.

(1)Clemson Edges by (6)Georgia Tech 24-17 in Ugly Win
Clem-GT.jpg

Clemson WR Malik Bennett bursts for an 88-yard kick return for a touchdown that regained the lead for the Tigers to start the second half.

Atlanta, GA - Both offenses looked ugly in the first half. Clemson could only manage to score two field goals. And Georgia Tech's only score was when FS Stephen Randall intercepted one of Clemson QB Marcus Bates' three interceptions on the day for a pick-six to make it 7-6 Georgia Tech at halftime.

But Clemson WR Malik Bennett opened the second half with an 88-yard kick return for a touchdown. And the Tigers were able to convert the 2-point attempt to put Clemson on top 14-7. The Yellow Jackets would regain the lead when QB Josh Gibson hooked up with FB Leonard Spinner who leaped across the goal line on an 8-yard touchdown reception to put Tech back in the lead, up 17-14. But Clemson HB Joey Thomas would score on a 3-yard touchdwon scamper to put the Tigers back on top 21-17. A lead which Clemson would not give up, edging out the Yellow Jackets with a close 24-17 ACC win. There is a good chance that this could be a preview of the ACC Championship.

Clemson 24

Committed: Oregon State

Oregon State received their first commitment from four-star G Taurean Redd from Santa Clara, California. Rated the 64th best prospect by Rivals, Redd is a great pass blocker and has an abilty to make a key block in the running game. The Beavers seem to be making a commitment to getting stronger up front on the offensive line.

Chris: We are here in Happy Valley for an integral Big Ten game that will surely be a major factor in who will win this conference. The winner will likely be considered the favorite to be the representative of the Big Ten in the Rose Bowl. Really, it isn' that far out of the realm of possiblilty that either one of these teams could still be in the championship picture if some other teams at the top slip up. There are some other huge games today. We weren't even really sure where we were going to be until just a few days ago. In the SEC, undefeated LSU takes on Tennessee. And out west in the Pac-10, Oregon will look to show the country that the loss to Wazzu was a fluke as USC will be in Eugene today.

Chris: And that brings us to the Big Ten game we have here today. (crowd gets ancy) If Penn State can pull this one off today, the Nittany Lions will be in position to maybe win the Big Ten, but may need Wisconsin to lose another game. If Ohio State wins today, they will have smooth sailing until they face rival Michigan which could be an equally important game down the road. Enough of all that. Who are you guys going with today?

Kirk: Penn State comes into today with the second best defense in the nation and ranked first in defending the run. That's really great but they have not faced an explosive offense like the Buckeyes have. You don't need to tell me about Heisman frontrunner QB Marvin Coleman as he is having a sensational year, 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions. But I think true freshman WR Brian Butler and HB Mike Tellis will be the difference makers today. Those two can really fly and make big plays. That's why I have to go with the Buckeyes of course! (Crowd boos)

Lee: Kirk, PSU has an equally exciting offense with QB Evan McKinley, maybe one of the most underrated QBs in the nation, and remember this guy, WR Tommy Rawls. He's guaranteed to make a big play today. Ohio State also has playmakers of course, but a very shaky offensive line, but the Buckeyes have one of the best defenses in the nation. This will be a close, close ball game. So with these crazy fans...I'm going with...(Lee puts on the Nittany Lion headgear as the crowd cheers. Then he takes it off) Ehhh!!! Forget about it! Not so fast!!! (Lee puts on the Brutus headgear to a chorus of boos) Go Buckeyes!

#15 Oregon State (6-1)

Corvallis, OR - After dismantling the surprisingly good Cougars of Washington State last week, the Beavers now take on the doormat of the Pac-10 in recent years, the Stanford Cardinal. But would Oregon State be looking ahead to the Trojans next week?

The OSU defense did not appear to be looking ahead as the Cardinal went three-and-out on their opening possession when OSU DT Lee King was able to get a sack on third down. On the opening offensive play for the Beavers, HB Roy Nolen got the handoff up the middle, and burst through a giant hole for an easy 64-yard touchdown run to quickly put Oregon State on top 7-0.

Things appeared from going bad to worse for the Cardinal when OSU OLB Carlos Matthews forced a fumble loose from Stan HB Jason Garrett which the Beavers recovered. However, after further review the play was reversed. Not long after, Garrett was able to break loose for a 41-yard gain. Then QB Jason Rodgers threw a rocket near the sideline of the end zone to TE Carlos Johnson, who came up with an unbelievable one-handed catch for a 20-yard touchdown in double coverage to tie the game up 7-7.

The Beavers suddenly looked like they had lost the confidence and momentum they had earlier as they were forced to punt. The Cardinal actually had a chance to take the lead but missed on a 43-yard field goal opportunity.

As the second quarter opened up, the Beavers got back in rhythm, and HB Roy Nolen was able to score on a 6-yard touchdown scamper to put OSU back in front 14-7. Then OSU SS Courtney Smith would pick off Stan QB Jason Rodgers, where Smith took off with only the QB Rodgers to beat. Smith easily got by Rodgers for a pick-six to suddenly put the Beavers up 21-7 just like that.

Stanford would not help their cause any when head coach Jim Harbaugh decided to go for it near midfield and failed to convert. Not long after, OSU HB Roy Nolen broke off another long run of 47-yards for another touchdown to make it 28-7 OSU.

But the Cardinal were not dead yet as HB Jason Garrett on a screen pass was able juke past OSU OLB Carlos Matthews, and then SS Courtney Smith was unable to make the tackle as Garrett would take it the distance for a 79-yard touchdown reception to tightent the Beavers lead to only 28-14.

OSU QB Justin Rust would get the Beavers in position to score a 39-yard field goal with :51 left to make it 31-14 OSU at halftime. Viewers also learned that WR Brian Herring would be out the remainder of the game with a bruised shoulder he suffered on the last kick return.

Oregon State looked to continue right where they left off as QB Justin Rust threw a laser over the middle to WR Marcus Sullivan who split through the defense for a 58-yard touchdown reception to make it 38-14 OSU.

Stanford was fighting an uphill battle now and Oregon State would score again when HB Roy Nolen was able to get to the outside after making a sweet move for a 15-yard touchdown run. The Beavers were now up big 45-14.

Nolen would actually score one more in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter to score a school record five touchdowns on the day with a 4-yard touchdown scamper, and be named NCAA offensive player of the week in a 52-21 blow out of the Stanford Cardinal. Next week sould be a much different outcome as the Beavers travel to Los Angeles to face the USC Trojans in what should be a pivotal Pac-10 game.

OSU-PSU.jpg

PSU HB Kris Jolly was a big reason for the success of the Nittany Lions with 175 yards, three touchdowns on the ground, and one touchdown reception.

State College, PA - One of the most surprising scores for a game of this magnitude in years. Though one would have never known how lop-sided the score would be at the end of the game at the start of it. The Lions started off well as PSU QB Evan McKinely floated a beautiful pass to WR Adam Fields for an early 17-yard touchdown. But then OSU HB Mike Tellis took the ensuing kick return 89 yards to the house for an early 7-7 tie in the opening minutes. It looked like it would be a shootout. It was, but only the Nittany Lions would be doing the shooting.

The problems for the Buckeyes started when leading Heisman favorite QB Marvin Coleman fumbled and PSU recovered. It would be the first of seven turnovers given up by Coleman which would ultimately be the Buckeyes' undoing. Coleman would throw a ridiculous six interceptions in the game. Despite the turnovers, the Nittany Lions dominated in the trenches on both sides of the field. OSU HB Mike Tellis found very little running room while PSU HB Kris Jolly was allowed to run wild for 175 yards and scoring a total of four touchdowns as Penn State clearly has become the team to beat in the Big Ten.

Ohio State 20
QB Marvin Coleman: 19-40, 210 yds, td, 6 int, fl
HB Mike Tellis: 23 car, 58 yds, td, 5 rec, 45 yds, 89-yd krtd
WR Chance Botts: 5 rec, 69 yds
FS Derrick Parker: 7 tkl, 3 tfl, sk, defl

Penn State 62

HB Kris Jolly: 30 car, 175 yds, 3 td, rec td
WR Tommy Rawls: 5 rec, 70 yds
MLB Drew Starks: 10 tkl, 2 tfl, sk, int, 2 defl
