They gave up a 5th starter, 4th outfielder and a fringe prospect. Who cares? I'm sure it's less then what the A's want for Bailey.
Holy shit, so now we're going to resign Greinke and Marcum, tie up 75 million on six players? Yeah I bet that happens. I've said I support resigning Greinke more then any other offseason move possibly, but every day I get a little more worried that it won't happen. Melvin pissed the money away on that asinine contract to Ramirez.
I'd love to see where you're getting your numbers from on the Gonzalez/A-Ram/Gamel craptrio expected War. Gonzalez put up 1.1 WAR, and A-Ram put up 3.6. We're lucky if that holds steady, but the odds are they're up for regression. So at minimum you're expecting Mat Gamel, the guy who is putting up a .167 batting average in the Dominican leagues this winter to be worth 1.3 wins? Eric Hosmer was worth 1.6, and he shits all over Mat Gamel.
Wut? Wut? Wut? I'm sorry but you're clueless. Odorizzi is the best player in the deal, and the Brewers certainly miss him. He's better then Jungmann or anyone else in the system right now. You're delusional if you think he took a step back this year, he shit all over A+ ball and made the mid season all star team, and then held his own in AA ball, in his age 21 season! Don't get me wrong, I still support the Greinke deal, but don't act like the Brewers got him for a bag of shit, especially when you clearly aren't even familiar with the prospects.
Don't question my fanhood just because I don't blindly support every move by the team! I choose to recognize the limitations that the team playing in the smallest market in the MLB has. Melvin doesn't, sure he might use it as a scapegoat for Fielder leaving, but the rest of his moves don't back it up.
I'm confused, the Brewers have two Greinkes? Do we get to keep the one who pitched in May, or the one who pitched in August. If Braun is suspended for 50 games, that offense is going to blow, there's no way around it, and after 2012, it's a crap shoot, our top prospects are gone.
The Reds, on the other hand, have everyone under team control for multiple years, if they resign Votto past 2013, watch out! And they still have their top prospects, how is that not a better situation then what the Brewers were in last spring?
The Reds overpaid for Latos. Brewers got a former cy young award winner for a pretty good SP prospect, overrated SS prospect, a RP who is a crackhead and then Lorenzo Cain. Reds gave up Alonso who is easily a better player than whoever the Brewers traded.
Brewers can easily afford both Greinke and Marcum. After this season, Wolf's and K-Rod's contracts come off the books. Wolf is making I believe 10 million this season, and K-Rod is going to be making 13 million. That's 23 between those two players.
You can replace Morgan (about 3 mil) with Logan Schafer, who looks to be a pretty good player. Caleb Gindi can replace Corey Hart in a year or two as well. He has some potential to be a pretty good player as well.
Using Gamel's winterleague stats is utter bullshit. Just because a guy does terrible in winterleague doesnt mean shit. Narron is going to be working with him during ST in the spring, and he deserves every shot to be an everyday 1B.
Projected (FanGraphs)
Alex Gonzalez: .244 AVG, .277 OBP, .377 SLG, 13 HR, 49 RBI, 1.3 WAR
A-Ram: .287 AVG, .340 OBP, .469 SLG, 22 HR, 87 RBI, 3.0 WAR
Greinke is going to be better than last year as well. His 2nd half, he had a 2.59 ERA and went 9-3 after the AS break. It was obvious that he was pitching much better in the first half than what his #'s showed. FIP on the year was 2.98 and XFIP was 2.56.
Brewers can easily sustain a payroll of 100 million or so. 3 million fans 3 of the last 4 years, and Mark A has proven he would spend to put a good team on the field.
So, Goblin, what would you have done this season? Start 2 rookies in Green ad Gamel after you just won 96 games and was 2 wins away from the W.S.?
Really would like to hear your plan this off-season.
And btw, A-Ram is making 6/10/10 with a 4 mil buyout and 6 mil defered in 2018 or some shit like that.
How is that exactly overpaying?
