Is anybody else a bit uneasy with all of the positive attention Ray Lewis is getting?

Right. The Kobe thing was way more blown up than what actually occured. When the time came for the woman to really get her story together, she couldn't do it and it was effectively thrown out. Apples and oranges to Ray Lewis.

Even though Marvin Harrison is out of the league, he seems to be way more guilty than ever mentioned in the murder at his car shop.

Yeah, Harrison seems likely to have committed a murder. And yet, unless you're a hardcore football fan with a pretty decent memory, you never know/forgot about it almost immediately.

I'm more inclined to dislike the perception of Harrison, or especially Leonard Little. With Lewis, there's no hard evidence that he killed either or did anything other than cover up the murders, which is still deplorable. But I almost think the loose ends make his situation worse. Because people can say that he did murder someone, which is an assumption at best. Then you have little, who didn't get in a street fight with some questionable characters. He drunkenly sped through a red light and killed a woman, acting alone, we KNOW he did, and then years later he got another DUI. And seemingly not one person cared about this in the national media. Little is remembered as a few time Pro Bowl retired DE and not much else.

As much as I like you W2B, Lewis is almost ALWAYS tied to the murder case. It's a given, so there's not much use in bringing it up again in news about Lewis IMO. Little is the example of a guy involved in killing someone that everyone has just forgot about.

LOL at this contrived thread.

I doubt he did anything on a first hand level at that incident other then be in the wrong place at the wrong time. They bust plenty of Ray Carruth's, I doubt the legal system would mess this one up.

What ever Ray did, I'm sure he repented and redeemed himself and will be known as a great player and annoying constant talker

Again though, nobody is outwardly praising Little or Harrison for being great men. And if they were, I would take them to task the same if they ignored their respective issues that contradict the claim.

This isnt about comparing Lewis's transgressions to Little or Harrison or Kobe or anybody else. It's about the pass he's been given in the media the last couple of days, as they all gush about what a swell person he is. I dont know, I find it all a bit disconcerting, and worse, it's obvious pandering.

What I'm saying is the audience doesn't need to be reminded of what he did. Even after 12 or 13 years, everyone remembers. Then I guess you want it to be stressed or him talked about in the context of "decent guy now, involved in murder years ago though". But again, everyone remembers. It's linked to him forever. Then there is someone who ACTUALLY killed somebody, with hard evidence, that gets glossed over if not completely forgotten. Which one is the bigger injustice? I don't get what you want, to be pandered to about Lewis being involved in a murder every time someone talks about his career. It's ALREADY locked into 90% of the audience's consciousness about the guy! I don't think there's a need for you to see praise for Lewis and interject that "let's not forget the murder trial" that is arguably the biggest sports/court happening since OJ or Rae Carruth. It's overkill, no pun intended.

Here is what I want.

If you are going to praise him as a football player, for football things, fine. But if you are going to praise him for being some great human being, and a great man, then it's irresponsible to not also bring up the murders. To me it's insulting, disconcerting, and downright crass.

Look at Mike Tyson. He's now viewed as an "interesting" fellow, and not the vile human being he was in the late 80s-90s. He's also proof of the two things here in that A) You can change how people perceive you and B) They still rarely forget the major details. I'm sure that many, many people who are fans of the guy now can tell you about his rape case. That doesn't mean we have to be beat over the head with it years and years later. IMO, the bigger the news story, the less you have to recount it down the line. Same with OJ. It was so big that the mention of just their names (OJ/Lewis) illicits a lot of reactions still tied to their crimes, as I believe ralaw brought up. So yeah, I think there's a HEAVILY implied context there.

I completely disagree, I think in the case of ESPN & Fox & CBS there is no implied context whatsoever. And in my view you cant praise the man on a human level with any shred of credibility while also completely ignoring his past. I think there is obvious pandering to the NFL involved.

We will have to agree to disagree.

LOL at this. When OJ was acquitted of murder, the Hertz company still got rid of all his commercials. The NFL is currently making commercials featuring Ray Lewis.

People just aren't getting it. Oh well.

Another stupid thing about all of this is if Ray Lewis is who he seems (at least by my own observations), he probably wouldn't be bothered by that being brought up. It doesn't need to be the focal point of any peice about him. I think we all want to like Ray Lewis anyways so it's not like an NFL fan is going to boycott the Ravens over it.

Gregg Easterbrook is a haughty douchebag whose work I hesitate to promote, but he wrote on this exact topic today so I guess I will link to his work:

http://espn.go.com/espn/playbook/st...ld-transformation-more-important-field-legacy

Ray Lewis is injured and will not play again this season. Given that he will be 38 years old in 2013, his illustrious career might be over. The garish yellow jacket of Canton induction is in his future. How should Lewis be assessed?

The minor question is whether Lewis was tailing off this year. The answer is: Of course he was -- he was playing as an NFL linebacker at age 37. Sunday, Lewis whiffed badly on what looked to be a routine tackle at the line of scrimmage, allowing Felix Jones of Dallas a 22-yard touchdown run. In 2010, the Ravens' defense was fifth against the rush; in 2011, it was second; after Sunday, it was 26th. Father Time is catching up to others on the Baltimore front, too. But Lewis' decline is obvious. Traditionally teams run away from him; this season they've run at him. The reason is aging, a human condition that appears irreversible.

So how to assess Lewis? The positive are many: Super Bowl ring, two defensive Player of the Year awards, an amazing 12 Pro Bowl trips. Among the few middle linebackers of the modern era who do not come off the field on passing downs (Brian Urlacher and London Fletcher head the short list of others). Active in public service. And in an era of me-first job-hopping by players and coaches alike, Lewis has spent his entire 17-season career in the same place. He might be the last of a dying breed in terms of loyalty to team and city.

The negative: Lewis has a criminal record, from pleading guilty to a serious crime. He cannot be understood without this context, which in recent years has been strangely absent from sportscasting and sportswriting.

In 2000, Lewis and two other men were charged with murder in Fulton County, Ga. (Atlanta). The murder charge was dropped when Lewis pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and agreed to testify against the friends he had been with when the friends stabbed two men to death after a Super Bowl party. Lewis admitted lying to police, and based on his testimony, the best-case reading of his actions is that a huge, muscular NFL player stood by doing nothing while his companions killed a pair of men. The companions subsequently were acquitted on grounds of self-defense; it was suggested, though never proved, that the two men killed threatened Lewis' group with a gun. Society might never know for sure what happened that night. When a desperate fight occurs in the dark, even the people involved might never know for sure what happened.

Until the killings, Lewis had a reputation as a man to be feared. Since the killings, his reputation has changed: Now it is of a hard-nosed football player, but a kind person off the field. He talks to youth groups. He is tireless in having his photograph taken with strangers, something many NFL celebrities dislike. (I have observed Lawrence Taylor become angry when approached by kids for a photograph.) He is unfailingly accessible to the media, which many NFL players consider their enemy. He smiles and stops to help people.

That is -- Lewis, by appearances, is redeemed. No one can know what is in another person's heart. But since 2000, Lewis has seemed a changed man. And this is more important than his achievements as a football player.

The world is full of impressive athletes, and full of men who have done bad things and gotten away with it. There is a distinct shortage of those who have made themselves better people.

Assuming Lewis leaves the NFL, reporters and conventional audiences will want him to tell amusing anecdotes of his experiences his famous football players. He should tell awkward, unpleasant anecdotes about his own life. Lewis' experiences with himself are the essence to assessing him. The saying goes: What happens to a man matters less than what happens inside a man. In Lewis' case, it seems that what happened inside was good.

Leave it to the dolts on this site to completely miss the point of the OP.

Who said he can't "live"? I'm well aware he had his day in court, and i'm well aware he put it behind him and has kept his nose clean ever since. Never said otherwise. Not sure why people are thanking this total nonpoint of assorted cliches.
You dont have to say it, your OP says it. You feel "uneasy" because nobody is harping on the past and dragging his name through the mud. My point was..... deal with it. I know there were people murdered and we should sympathize with the family of the victims but again, you nor I was there. Besides that, they chose to settle out of court and let the shit die and you should too.

The legal process played out and he was cleared of any wrong doing, why should anyone listen to you or any media figurehead on your soapbox talking about some shit that was put to bed when he was set free? Double jeopardy is prohibited in this country, leave the man be. He doesnt owe you or anyone else shit.

^still completely missing the point

EDIT- also, you clearly don't understand the case if you think Lewis was cleared of any wrongdoing

I get what you are trying to say and Ill keep saying the same shit. Let him live. He was cleared of any wrong doing, if the NFL wants to promote him as the greatest human being that ever walked the earth then so be it. You obviously arent getting the point, we have a judicial system in place for a reason. Why do you give a shit?

Gregg Easterbrook is a haughty douchebag whose work I hesitate to promote, but he wrote on this exact topic today so I guess I will link to his work:

http://espn.go.com/espn/playbook/st...ld-transformation-more-important-field-legacy

Easterbrook is being fair with this piece. He put over Lewis for being a great player, and did not fall into the narrative of what a swell guy Lewis is until he examined the shady circumstances of those murders and Lewis's involvment. Because of that, I have no gripe with the final synopsis of concluding that Lewis may be a changed man. We have no reason to think otherwise. At least Easterbrook had the guts to write a fair piece, unlike most of his colleagues this week.

Why do keep saying "let him live"? What does that have to do with anything? When did I suggest otherwise?

And no, he was not cleared of any wrongdoing. Again, you don't even know what you're talking about, so no offense, but get lost until you can grasp the subject matter. Thanks.

Well you continue to allow this to effect your day then W2B. Is what its gonna be.

LOL at this. When OJ was acquitted of murder, the Hertz company still got rid of all his commercials. The NFL is currently making commercials featuring Ray Lewis.

People just aren't getting it. Oh well.

What I don't get is you comparing it to OJ commercials fret he got acquitted. It's been over a decade, and it's moral police the NFL we're talking about here. The NFL doesn't give 2/3rds of half a shit what Lewis did if he can make them a buck.

Are you to say that the public perceives Tyson in the Hangover the same way they perceived Tyson at rape trial? No, shit changes. That was my point, but LOL at that. You're right, I don't get that. Oh well.

Remember the guy at the ESPYs or whatever E-60 did a thing on him. He was a boxer who got wrongly convicted of murder and spent like 25 years in jail on a murder he didn't commit. Then they found evidence that he didn't do it, and he got another chance to box and be free and all that stuff. And it was a feel good story and Obama called him and De La Hoya got behind him. But he was a criminal before that. Nobody wanted to talk about that part, because he turned it all around. It's the nature of news to speak in the present.

At what point is bringing up Lewis and then the murder overkill to you? Honestly.
