I'm going to take the next couple of months to slowly build a gaming computer. Haven't built one since i was like 17 but my estimated date of completion is February 1st 2013... hopefully the world doesn't end before then. Obviously if you are building it in phases, you would want to start with the case, motherboard, RAM and PSU. You could easily bring over your existing hard drive (back up everything and reformat before installing/re-installing OS) and lots of good motherboards have built in HD graphics that would get you buy until you could get a beast card to put in as your primary.

You should at least get the CPU and motherboard together especially if you go the AMD route. I've read a couple of complaints recently where mobos for certain AMD sockets are getting hard to find.
AMD has been having some serious cash flow issues lately and they really don't know what direction to move into.
They hired a bank recently to go over their financials and try to point them where to go.

Mobo is a pretty important component. Its not just a matter of matching the mobo to the processor. If you don't pick well, you can end up limiting what your graphic card options are or whether you can OC at all. Before picking, do a bit of reading. Sites like Newegg do a decent job of helping you understand the tech. There are also some sites out there that provide suggested builds, and that can be real helpful too.
I like what I'm reading about the new Intel Ivy Bridge architecture. The i5 3570K processor looks sweet. Its supposedly a better version of the i5 2500K, which what I'm running. I think what Maynard has, too.
24" ASUS monitor is under $200, so its not like you need a ton of budget for that. Unless you want a 32" LCD TV....
i have the i7-2600k...i have not even come close to pushing this processor and i have not overclocked it or even though about overclocking. For 2k you are going above and beyond. i spent about 1500 and that includes a 27 inch monitor.
i still have my list of items which is shown in the spoiler - Total cost is $1800 with these prices shown as of july when i made this list....but i didnt pay that much. the cpu/mobo was a combo and i save 100 right there. I got the case for 100 and the monitor for 270. everything was from newegg so i got free shipping and paid no tax.
I suggest looking at a 30 day free shoprunner account so u dont have to pay shipping. and look for deals obviously. at the time, these itens were pretty much top of the line, and today there nothing i throw at it that it cant handle with ease.
