Maize's Golden Flashes: A Kent State Dynasty

Maize

Kent_State_Logo2.jpg

I have decided to go through with another dynasty, this time, on the PS3. This will be my first 'next gen' dynasty, and my first in a while. Last year, I went with the Golden Domers, this year, I landed on the Golden Flashes.

I already have a lot of story lines ready to go. This is all about building a program that has one conference title, never made the MAC Championship game, and hasn't been to a bowl game since 1972 (same year as conference title).

As always, realism and writing is the key. I hope you all enjoy my dynasty, and if you have any questions/comments/concerns, feel free to post or PM me.

Dynasty Information
Platform: Playstation 3
Gameplay Level: All-American
Quarter Length: 7 Minutes
Sliders: Custom, always a work in progress.
Rosters: Block-O, GatorBait2006NC, & MZizzle's Rosters
Roster Size: 70 players, 55 active
Scheduling: Realism is the key. I will try to stick to Kent State's future schedule and also stick to how they usually schedule games.
Redshirts: I am allowed to redshirt true freshmen, transfers, and back-up skill position players.
Recruiting: Varsity Level.
In-Season Updates: Top 25 and Heisman watch will be updated every week. Team standings and individual statistics will be updated after the first four game, after the ninth game, then after the final game of the season.
In-Game: Choose one of the selected plays on First and Second Down. Then on third down, I am on my own. Try to create realistic statistics, so bring in back-ups if the game gets out of reach. Adjust sliders after every four games if needed.

"Cheapest Tickets in the Country"
Prior to the upcoming Kent State football season, the athletic department announced that it would be dropping ticket prices. New Athletic Director Joel Nielsen had a football background and wanted to "commit" more resources to the "success of the football program."

He started by making the Golden Flashes' home games more financially accessible. Dropping student and alumni season ticket prices to thirty dollars, hoping there will be more people at Dix Stadium on Saturdays this fall. Thirty dollar season tickets means five dollar home games for all fans. Making Kent State the least expensive season and single game ticket, of all 120 FBS Schools.

Getting more people to home games is just the beginning of Joel Nielsen's commitment to the football program. During his time at University of South Dakota, he secured the school a spot in the Great West Conference for football. His strategic approach to all athletics made him a perfect choice to replace Laing Kennedy as AD.

Kent State is known to have one of the most competent and comprehensive athletic programs in the country. Yet the football program hasn't found success on the field. A new Athletic Director is looking to change that, starting by getting fans excited about Kent State football.

Since 2008, the largest home game attendance has been just over 16,000. Leaving 9,000+ seats open for every home game over the past two seasons. Further more, attendance records show only two games with crowds over 19,000 since 2003. Dix Stadium has a maximum capacity of 25,000, but has barely seen 20,000 supporters the last seven years. Thus, it has never been sold out in its 40 year history.

Martin's Seat Hot At Start of Season Seven
Doug Martin became Head Coach of Kent State in 2004. Taking over for Head Coach Dean Pees, much was expected from the long time Assistant Coach. 2003 marked his first year with KSU, a year later he would become the Head Coach. Before that however, he had spent eleven seasons as an assistant coach at East Carolina.

An offensive minded coach, he has seen progression over the past six seasons. "It's a demanding process to build a true winning program," quoted Doug Martin when asked about his time at the helm of the Golden Flashes. "But I do expect people to want to see more on the field, but we are getting there."

Martin is the 19th Head Coach in Kent State's history. In six seasons, he has racked up a 24-46 record, and a 17-31 record in the MAC Conference. His best record came in 2006 when the team went 6-6, but did not make a bowl game. 2006 was one year removed from a 1-11 team, thus Martin was heralded for a five game turnaround from '05 to '06.

Since then, the team hasn't finished better than 4th in the MAC East Division. Last season looked promising, but injuries halted any major success. This season, the team returns a slew of starters and the pressure is on for a winning season.

Since 1980, the Kent State football program has had two winning seasons: 1987 (7-4) and 2001 (6-5). Many expect that Doug Martin might need a winning season to keep his job. While fans have been patient, a new Athletic Director and a new "vision" at the top could mean the end of Martin's time in Kent, Ohio.

After Martin's 6-6 season in 2006, then Athletic Director Laing Kennedy gave his Head Coach a contract extension through the 2010 season. That extension is over at the end of this season. No negotiation will be made until the end of the season.

2010 Kent State Football Preview
Last season, Kent State fought through injuries to scrap together a five win season. It started with losing their Senior playmaker, leader, and running back Eugene Jarvis. In his absence, the offense struggled, especially on the ground. The passing attack was led by a true Freshman who was "learning by doing."

Under Head Coach Doug Martin, the Kent State football team has gone through many changes. Including changing from a balanced offensive scheme, to a pass heavy, and now a spread offense. Coaches have come and gone, and yet the team he has assembled for 2010 seems to be his best yet.

Questions surround the offense, but the team will rely on a tough defense that is returning seven starters. If everyone can stay healthy, and the offense can find success and consistency - Doug Martin could be taking the Golden Flashes bowling.

Offense
Returning Starters: 8
Strengths: The team will be led at the skill positions by players they can rely on to step up. Eugene Jarvis is back for his sixth season, chasing records and an NFL dream. Tyshon Goode showed tremendous potential as a freshman last season, and now becomes the team's top option. Jonathan Simpson is a pass-catching tight end that could challenge to be the team's leader in receptions.
Weaknesses: Experience, specifically on the offensive line. For the offense to break through in '10, the O-Line might have to come together quickly. Three starters are back, but only one (Chris Anzevino) started every game last season. The pass protection seems adequate, but the run blocking must improve.
Keep An Eye On: Spencer Keith. Last season, the coaching staff was high on the freshman Keith's ability. Yet, Giorgio Morgan was the Quarterback in waiting following Julian Edelman's departure. After Morgan's opening week injury, Keith took the reigns and never let go. Morgan made appearances, but Keith showed poise, an understanding of the offense, and a better arm. A year of experience could make him a rising star in the MAC Conference.
-
Defense
Returning Starters: 7
Strengths: Playmakers at every level. Up front, the team is led by a pair of tackles, including returning starter Quinton Rainey. Rainey is an all-around force, and now gets a chance to play next to Ishma'ail Kitchen. At linebacker, Cobrani Mixon led the Flashes in tackles last season. He is a ball hawk and leader for a strong unit. Then in the secondary, Brian Lainhart is making a case of being the team's best defender. Although it will be tough to snag 7 interceptions again.
Weaknesses: The rush defense improved in '09, but the team now has to replace two players on the defensive line. "Buck" player Monte Simmons might have to stop disappearing on rushing plays. Depth is also an issue as the team cannot afford any injuries to key starters.
Keep An Eye On: Dorian Wood. A senior who finally gets a chance to start, Wood wants to lead the team in tackles. Former Michigan transfer Cobrani Mixon has something to say about the team's leader in tackles, so the two have a bet going on their season's total. Wood is ferocious and competitive, and could be the fuel and new starter the team needs.
-
Report Card: Offense - C- // Defense - C // Special Teams - B-
-
Schedule: The Flashes' season opens easy (FCS Opponent), but gets tough in a hurry. Three straight road games include trips to Boston College and Happy Valley. Then they open conference play against an improved Miami University squad. Following the first four, is a home game against rival Akron, and two more tough road games in the state of Ohio (Toledo, Bowling Green). The season ends with four of the last five at home. But they host MAC-favorites Temple and close the season with Ohio. Momentum is important, but Kent State must take their lumps and focus on one game at a time. A bowl game is not out of the question, but they must have a winning conference record to do so.
-
Overview: It is season seven for Doug Martin as Head Coach, and it could be 'un'lucky number seven. A new Athletic Director is watching closely and success is expected from a team that returns 17 starters. A MAC East title is not out of the question, but the offense must play to its strengths and include a more balanced approach. Staying healthy, aggressive, and competitive is the name of the game. That is if Doug Martin wants to keep his job, and the football program plans on making its' first bowl game since 1972.

So I originally posted this on Operation Sports, but I was glad to see this back, and I quickly wanted to transfer everything over. Everything is posted before my first game, which was against Murray State. Since Murray State isn't in the game, it is against FCS-East. I will update on the games I have played soon, probably tonight.

Let me know if you have any questions or want more information on anything. As always, I can give you info on a team, player, game, etc. - Just let me know.

I just wanted to update everyone on the first two games I have played. My opening game was against Murray State, and I held off a late scoring barrage to win 27-24. Although the final score was 3 points apart, I had the lead the entire game. Murray State just scored 21 unanswered in the 4th Quarter. After that game, I played at Boston College. After being tied 14-14 early in the second quarter, we quickly gave up on playing defense. David Shinskie shredded my secondary for 5 touchdown passes. The final score was 45-14, moving my record to 1-1.

If you want to read more on my first two games, you can go here

The reason I am not posting the first two games is because I am going back to the original layout for game recaps. So I want to start with Penn State.

Here is the rest of my schedule:

Recruiting News and Updates

Kent State
Surprise Sunshine State JUCO to Visit
Just two weeks after Kent State received their first verbal commitment, they enter a bye week with more good news. The team could use good news after an abysmal effort against Penn State. The Nittany Lions simply shut down the Kent State attack, including holding Quarterback Spencer Kieth to 80 yards off 7 completions.

The team might get some help at the Quarterback position, at least some potential competition for Keith. Chris Finley has listed Kent State as one of the five teams in the running for his services next season. Finley, a Sophomore at South Florida Community College, will have two years of eligibility and will look to play right away next season.

Originally, it seemed top BCS programs would be where the three-star Port Charlotte native would land (Alabama, Nebraska, or Florida). Now, he has added Florida Atlantic and strangely Kent State to his list. Kent State was the first team to offer him a scholarship and Finley seems to have good rapport with the coaching staff.

Finley brings two years of experience and a great skill set to the table. A strong arm, he is a pocket passer that has found success running a spread offense in High School and college. Before he makes his decision, he will visit Kent, Ohio when the team hosts rival Akron.

While Kent State seems an unlikely choice, the team has gained ground over Alabama, Florida and Nebraska. It seems playing time and the chance to start are more important than being a supportive back-up at a prestigious program.
