Recruiting News and Updates

Kent State
Visits Add Intrigue to Rivalry Game
Coming off of a win and looking forward to playing their main rival, Akron; Kent State is feeling they are "gaining momentum (with recruiting)." It started with South Florida Community College Quarterback Chris Finley showing enough interest in the Flash to schedule an official visit. He will be joined by two other players making their official visits. Along with rumors of other players taking unofficial visits to Kent, Ohio during the "Battle for the Wagon Wheel."

Along with Finley is a potential target, Will Jones. A receiver from close-by Lima, Ohio, he fits the mold of a receiver. At 6'1" and growing, he has ideal size and ability to go up and get receptions that others simply cannot. He physically has all the tools, but also drops too many catch-able balls. His decision looks to be between Bowling Green and Kent State.

Also visiting this week is a player outside of Kent State's usual "pipeline." Leo Sims is an offensive lineman from Buford, Georgia. Mainly an interior lineman, he is playing center during his senior season. Although he could play any position on the line, and has at the varsity level.

A bit of a surprise, it seemed Duke was the favorite to get a commit from Sims. Yet Sims is still out taking official visits and wanted to visit one of the three MAC schools he has been in contact with. Also this week, the team learned that hard-hitting corner Brian Stanley will take his official visit when Kent hosts Ball State. Those are two of the three teams Brian is interested in, although Kent seems to be the favorite.

Whoa! Shit. You have 3 injuries? Dang that sucks. Looks great Maize

Yeah I'm going to post a story soon about the injuries. But I lost my starting center and probably best offensive lineman. Statistically, he was playing poor but he is rated the highest. Three plays after Anzevino is hurt, his back-up Kline goes down.

Kitchen is a tough loss, but Rainey was getting more PT and it gives me a chance to play with true frosh Terrell Johnson.

Recruiting Story, Toledo Game, and injury article posted later tonight.

Recruiting News and Updates

Kent State
Flash Add Four, After Only Two Visit
Kent State was hosting Akron, the team's biggest rival in the annual game for the "Wagon Wheel" trophy. The team was also hosting three players on official visits, and multiple others that were visiting the campus. It was the team's first home game after a tough stretch of three road games.

The game was all about defense, as Kent State stayed aggressive and held the Zips to only 3 points. The stunning victory was enough to keep the Wagon Wheel in Kent, Ohio for another season. Next season, the game will be played in Akron and the Golden Flashes added recruits that might just see playing time against the Zips next year.

Chris Finley, a junior college product, is the highest rated recruit Kent State has landed thus far. Of the five players who have committed, Finley is the only three-star player. A Quarterback, he plans on battling Spencer Keith for the starting spot next season. Finley was originally a target of big programs, but he wanted a chance to start and liked that Kent State was the first school to offer him a scholarship.

Along with Finley, wide receiver Will Jones also took his official visit to Kent State. Jones is a raw, two-star talent that has a high ceiling. He wanted to play close to home, and Kent State's location and campus sold the Lima native.

Both Finley and Jones had taken official visits and had been offered a scholarship to play at Kent State for well over a month. Chris Jackson, however, had just shown up on Kent State's radar. Jackson is in the middle of an impressive Senior season in which he has grown into a FBS recruit. Originally looking at close-by Youngstown State, the two-star corner may be one of the best secondary players in the state of Ohio for the 2011 Recruiting Class.

Jackson had conversations with Head Coach Doug Martin, and after being offered a scholarship, he immediately verbally committed to Kent. The big (6'3") and physical corner was a basketball player and just recently took to football. He comes from a strong high school program in Springdale, and could be a star for Kent State in the future.

Finally, outside linebacker Cody Arnold took a trip with family and friends to the Akron game. During the game, he decided that Kent State was the right school for him and his family. He later called position coach Jim Fleming to tell him that he did not need an official visit, he had settled on Kent State.

Great news for the Golden Flashes who added four commitments to their 2011 Recruiting Class. They hope to secure one of the best recruiting classes in the MAC. And after this week, are well on their way.

Injuries Hit as Team Heads for Home
A difficult schedule for Kent State included five of the team's five seven games being played away from Dix Stadium. Five road games leaves the end of the schedule a bit easier for the Golden Flashes. Not making things easier is the injuries that have piled up for the team's last four games.

Starting with the team's only road victory so far, against Miami University. In that game, the team won by a slim, single touchdown margin. But also lost three key players. In the third quarter, center Chris Anzevino was pushed back by Miami's defensive line and landed on his leg. He would lay motionless, holding his leg before being carted off the field. A broken fibula, he was not expected to play the rest of the season.

The team seemed to lose their best offensive lineman, although Anzevino had struggled a bit (allowed 3 sacks). Three plays later, new Center Josh Kline was taking his first snaps of the season. It would be his last of the season as well: after his was pushed aside and broke his collarbone. A small hairline break, Kline will not play for the rest of the season.

Kent State only had two centers on their depth chart, and were left scrambling to find a replacement. Brian Waters, the team's back-up left tackle, will fill in for the team's final six games. One of the three BWs starting on Kent State's offensive line (Brian Winters, Bryan Wagner, Brian Waters).

Also the defense has lost two starters, one being arguably the team's best defensive player. Cobrani Mixon, team captain, impact player and a former All-MAC linebacker, was injured in the Toledo game. He left under his own will, and originally team doctors thought Mixon had dislocated his shoulder.

Good news for the Flashes, Mixon simply strained his shoulder muscle and would only need to sit out two games. He will be cleared to play against Temple but could, end up waiting until Army visits. Replacing Mixon is Senior Howard Bowens, who is excited for a chance to finally start.

All of the team's injuries will be a test of depth, especially with three of the injuries being season ending. Ishama'ail Kitchen also went down in the Miami game, but many expected less playing time with the emergence of Terrell Johnson and strong play of Quinton Rainey.

Now the team will travel to play a winless Bowling Green team that is looking to break through. Kent State is still eying a bowl birth, and will be looking to win three of six to do so.

I think I might start paying attention to this... I had a dynasty with KSU once upon a time.

Thanks Fox, I would appreciate if you followed and let me know how it is looking. I really like to turn a program around and Kent State is a good candidate. No bowl since '72 is crazy, especially with all the parity in the MAC.

Recruiting News and Updates

Kent State
McCray Commits, 2 to Visit
Kent State was returning home after a devastating road loss to Bowling Green. Giving the Eagles their first win of the season was tough to stomach, as the team continues to eye a postseason birth. Head Coach Doug Martin was ready to return home to focus more on his team's recruiting efforts.

The Golden Flashes did add a commitment from an offensive lineman, the first to commit to the 2011 class. Marcus McCray, a hometown interior lineman, gave a full commitment to play for Kent State next season.

Listed as a guard, McCray could play center and potentially right tackle. He has the ideal size and could make an instant impact for Kent State. He has played at the varsity level for Piqua High School for two full seasons. McCray's biggest obstacle will be working on his pass blocking, something crucial to a team that runs a spread offense like Kent State.

The team also returns home to host Ball State and two recruits. One of which, Brian Stanley, had scheduled his official visits weeks ago. He has been between MAC schools in his decision and is now down to three: Kent State, Toledo, and Akron. Wanting to stay in the state of Ohio, he could play safety and is a hard hitter that could be a special teams star in the near future.

The other recruit, Dwayne James, is a tight end who wants to be the one to replace Jonathan Simpson. He has given Kent a "soft" verbal commitment, but is waiting for after his official visit to finalize his commitment. An athletic player, he lacks ideal speed, but was mainly used in high school as a blocking tight end.
