Recruiting News and Updates

Kent State
Seven Commit After Big Visit
The 2012 season has come to an end for Kent State. After a strong defensive performance by the Golden Flash in their final game; it gave the team a third straight win over Akron. By beating the rival Zips, it gave Kent four wins, and some momentum for an important off-season.

The team will be losing some valuable pieces, none more important than Tyshon Goode. Now Kent's career reception leader (at 253), replacing him might take more of a team effort at the receiver position. After the Akron game, seven players in total committed to Kent for next season. One might help to replace Goode, receiver Terrance Johnson.

Johnson comes from Lincoln Park, Michigan, a city south west of Detroit and close to the Michigan-Ohio border. Targeting Northern Ohio also meant stops into Michigan, and the team brought in a receiver that has the skill set of a potential #1 receiver.

Johnson-to-Johnson might be something Kent fans might have to get used to hearing in the near future. Dustin Johnson, not the golfer, but the Senior high school Quarterback from a suburb east of Pittsburgh. He has a strong arm and was between Akron and Kent. He had favored Kent, but after they beat Akron, it led him to commit to be a Golden Flash.

Johnson expects to step in as the team's back-up, and will compete with Cedric McCloud and Ryan Davis next year to be the team's back-up to the oft injured Chris Finley.

Also on the offensive end, the team added an athlete that could be a starting offensive lineman next season. Mike Scott has played defensive line as well, but has found most of his success at guard. In his senior year, he moved over to center and could be the team's answer to the graduating Josh Kline.

A big body and skilled pass blocker, Scott is one of the few freshman who committed this week that could start in 2013. Lamar Jones, a power back who took his official visit last week, could also challenge Dominique Thomas for playing time.

Three defensive players might not play early, but all bring some much needed depth. Safety Zach Doyle, who hails from nearby Marion, is a balanced defender that must improve on his zone coverage as a safety. Michael Alford has all the necessary tools, but has battled injuries and stamina issues in his high school career. Not the fastest player, Alford is a solid tackler and finds a way to get involved on every play.

Finally, the team got a commitment from Anthony Smith, a junior college player and the team's second commit from the state of Michigan. Playing football for Alma College, he will enroll early and thinks he can find a spot on the team next year. He just wants a chance to play at the FBS level.

Recruiting News and Updates

Kent State
3 Commit, 7 Scholarships Remain
Just before a dead period in terms of recruiting, Kent State was able to add three more commits to their growing 2013 Recruiting Class. It will be Gonzales' second class as full-time Head Coach. Going into the off-season, he will still have seven scholarships to give, to take the number to 25.

Currently, 18 are committed, with three players adding a week after multiple players committed following the Akron game. Most notably, the team added another defensive end Mike McCray. The brother of Marcus, a guard who will be a sophomore next season.

Coming out of the Cleveland area, McCray had a senior season good enough to land him at a FBS school. Originally interested in Youngstown State and not being given a scholarship from a FBS program; late in the season, Akron, Eastern Michigan, and Kent all offered scholarships.

Picking to play with his brother, he joined the same week as another potential lineman, Ryan Cox. Too small to play offensive line, he played both in high school. He has room to bulk up and may need to. He does have the skill set to play right away. A great run blocker, he could find a spot on an offensive line that is losing five starters.

Finally, the team added an all-purpose back in Sidney Campbell. Campbell is a true full back that is a phenomenal lead blocker and short yardage back. He could push Dominique Thomas and others for playing time. Mainly because his bruising style is different from many of the backs already on the roster.

The team still has needs at receiver and offensive line. They will also be targeting help at linebacker, and also looking for Freddy Cortez replacement at punter. While the have one listed on the roster, the team could still be in the market for more special team's help. They have seven more spots to fill and plan on using all of them to aid the team that will be losing 15 players and 12 starters to graduation.

1. Too many one-star players.

2. You seem to have the most realistic dynasty in terms of wins and losses I've ever seen. What are your sliders?

1. It would be great if I wasn't fighting for those one stars, I think I need to tone down the recruiting difficulty.

2. As for sliders, I am always tweaking, but I would start with this: http://www.operationsports.com/foru...cfrmic-s-all-american-post-patch-sliders.html

I use 7 minute quarters and then when I record when scoring plays happened, I just double the time of plays, to make it look realistic. I'm not by my PS3 or I would give you what I have exactly, right now, but like I said, that post is a good starting point.

DC Durkin Fired
After another disappointing season in Billy Gonzales' sophomore campaign as coach, the defense took another step back. Before D.J. Durkin became Defensive Coordinator in 2011, he had replaced Pete Rekstis and was taking over, annually, of the best defenses in the MAC. Not just in the MAC, but in '08 and '09, a defense that was statistically one of the Top 25 in the nation. It took a bit of a step back in '10, but it was the strength of the program.

More specifically, the team was great against stopping the run. Since D.J. Durkin has taken over, he was quick to change the defensive philosophy. Going from a tough defense based on scheme and strength; to a defense that was individually based on speed and finesse.

Durkin was a successful positions coach under Urban Meyer and many considered Durkin a potential Head Coach, in the mold of his mentor Meyer. Coming into Kent, Durkin tore apart a base 4-3 defense that used a "buck" player: a hybrid defensive end, used for the pass rush.

The team struggled mightily in 2011 and was even worse in 2012. Durkin was given the reigns of the defense by Billy Gonzales, as both of them had worked in Florida under Urban Meyer. Noticing the defense had went from one of the best in the MAC to the worst (statistically), Durkin made some late season changes that did see some improvements.

Even with those small improvements, Coach Gonzales announced that D.J. Durkin would not return to head the defense in 2013. Gonzales said that Durkin caused too much "in fighting" and wanted more of a role in making team decisions including recruiting.

Coach Gonzales said the team would take a new direction and wanted to get back to the tough, physical style that made Kent feared and one of the best. He also wants a coach that will return to the 4-3 and not use multiple schemes. Durkin was once thought to be a rising coach that could be a Head Coach in the near future.

After struggling with his first stint of calling defensive plays, Durkin held himself responsible for not "understanding (what it takes) to be successful at Kent." Now the program will search for a replacement, in Gonzales' critical third year as Head Coach.

2012 Season Wrap-Up

The Mid-American Conference had a successful 2012 season, with seven teams being bowl eligible. While the conference only has three bowl affiliations, they had the chance to get teams in with at-large bowl bids. With more programs bowl eligible than there were bowl spots, the MAC did not receive a single at-large bowl bid.

Central Michigan won the MAC outright after representing the West division in the MAC Championship game at near-by Ford Field, in Detroit, Michigan. They played and defeated Temple, who had beaten Ohio in the regular season to represent the East division. After losing the game, Temple had a losing record and were not the team from the East division to be guaranteed a bowl game.

A controversial rule and decision, the Owls ended the season with a 6-7 record, and were one of five MAC schools to end the season with six wins. Ohio ended up being the only school from the East to make a bowl game; losing to Navy in the Eaglebank Bowl. The eight win Bobcats were held back from a chance to three-peat as MAC Champions by Temple, but still represented the MAC East in the post-season.

MAC Final Standings
1. Central Michigan - 12-2 (9-0)
2. Ohio - 8-5 (5-3)
3. Western Michigan - 6-7 (5-3)

MAC Champion: Central Michigan - 12-2 (9-0)
National Champion: Texas - 14-0 (9-0)
Heisman Winner: Garrett Gilbert, QB, Texas

So I updated everything on the front pages. The all-time record and winning percentage is updated, and Tyshon Goode is added to the record book.

Also, I think someone mentioned that they were worried I might get fired after the season. I actually got a two-year extension, I was surprised. Billy Gonzales is 9-15, with a 3-1 record versus rivals (Bowling Green and Akron). We are 0-3 against the Top 25, and 7-9 in conference. Good enough to stay two more years at Kent.

Kent Hires Haynes
With the 2012 college football season over, Texas being crowned National Champion, the focus now turns to the off-season. For Kent State, they wanted to fill the one coaching vacancy that came after the firing of D.J. Durkin. After two dismal years defensively, the team needed to make a change and wanted to get back to what had made them one of the best defenses in the country under Pete Rekstis.

Durkin had already landed on his feet, becoming the linebackers coach at Vanderbilt. Kent had interviewed numerous candidates but decided on their coach just days after the BCS National Championship.

The team announced that Paul Haynes, Ohio State's Secondary Coach, would become the next Defensive Coordinator for the Golden Flash. Haynes is a native of Ohio, a Kent State grad, and a coach that brings 16 years of coaching experience to Kent.

Working in the NFL, Big Ten (Ohio State and Michigan State) and once as Secondary Coach for Kent in the past (1999-2000), he returns to the team he walked on to in the fall of 1987. Playing under Glen Mason, Mason gave him an opportunity to play as a freshman. Where he led the team in interceptions during a 7-4 season. That was the team's last seven win season.

The year later, Dick Crum took over as Head Coach and Haynes would play on a 5-6 team, that a season later would go 0-11. Haynes has seen the best and worst of Kent football and wants to be a part of the resurrection of the program. After a knee injury in 1989, he was given a medical redshirt and graduated after the 1991 season. A 1-10 campaign under Pete Cordelli.

In five seasons, he played under three Head Coaches and saw only one winning season. He will install a base 4-3 defense that will use a nickel corner often, but will not use multiple schemes like Durkin did. Less of a finesse defense, it will be more of an attacking, aggressive unit. He understands the tough history and it molded him into a tough coach that never forgot his roots.

Haynes Hire Hatches History Lesson
Haynes, a bit of a statistician, compiled facts about the University's football team to show to Seniors upon being named Defensive Coordinator. A bit of motivation, to defy history and understand the difficult, losing past of Kent State.

The team's last non-losing season was in 2006, under Head Coach Doug Martin. The team went 6-6, after winning five straight games. The team had three conference losses, and finished third in the East Division. Since then, the team has had six straight losing seasons.

Moreover the team's last winning season was 2001. The team featured James Harrison and a team that led the MAC in sacks. A 6-5 record included three conference losses and a 4th place finish in the East Division.

Haynes then talked about the last bowl game Kent played in, the 1972 Tangerine Bowl. During that season, the team went 6-5-1 after starting the season 1-3-1. The run at the end of the season was enough to win the conference title and earn a bowl birth. Since only one team from the MAC was guaranteed a bowl game at this time.

The following season, under Head Coach Don James, who had just led the team to a bowl game, the team had it's best season, going 9-2. The team featured Jack Lambert and Gary Pinkel at linebacker, but the team would not win the MAC, losing their only conference game to the conference champ, Akron.

James would move on seasons later as Head Coach and Kent was never able to put together much success. Since 1980, the team has had two winning seasons. Outside of the 6-5 season in '01 was Glen Mason's 1987 team that went 7-4. In that year, like many others, too many conference losses meant no bowl appearance or conference title.

The team has had more defeated seasons since 1980 (4) than winning ones (2). 1982, '89, '93, and '98 were all 0-11 seasons. Haynes takes over with the team at a crossroads. The offense has improved while the defense looks deplorable. If the team wants to defy history, Haynes might have to toughen up a team and try to will his players to want to break the 40 year bowl drought.

Recruiting News and Updates

Kent State
2013 National Signing Day
Following a disappointing 4-8 season, Kent State was looking for a strong off-season to get a better result in Billy Gonzales' third season as Head Coach. The defense will see a drastic change, with new Defensive Coordinator Paul Haynes taking over a defense that has been abysmal in the last two seasons.

Haynes, an alumni as well, wants to be part of the turnaround at Kent State. A big part of that is strong recruiting and the coaching staff is trying to create a local pipeline from schools in Northern Ohio, Western Pennsylvania and Southern Michigan.

The latest recruiting class does that, with 15 of the 21 recruits signing a Letter of Intent from the state of Ohio. Four are from Michigan, yet only one (Quarterback Dustin Johnson) from the state of Pennsylvania.

A class that only features one three-star recruit, it has been called the "weakest" recruiting class in Gonzales' tenure. The coaching staff still talks about the difficulties of selling Kent State and all agree that winning would help.

21 players in all signed, led by three-star kicker Chad Brown. Brown is expected to replace Freddy Cortez, and many expect the freshman placekicker to replace him well. A big leg and a background as a punter as well, Brown comes from Missouri, and was a target of many Big XII programs. He picked the first team to offer him a scholarship, and the one that guaranteed him early playing time.

Joining Brown, the coaching staff has hinted that many true freshman could start right away in 2013. The team lost all five starters on the offensive line to graduation. Matt Barrow, a one-star left tackle from local Zaneville High School, is versatile and a strong pass-blocker. He could push to start at either tackle or guard this upcoming season.

Same can be said for Mike Scott, who projects to be an interior offensive lineman at Kent. Scott is big (6'4" 324) and will need to work on his footwork, although his background playing as a defensive lineman could help on the offensive side.

The big buzz around Kent's class is the future connection of Dustin Johnson to Terrance Johnson. Dustin, a two-star signal-caller from Pennsylvania. A prototypical pocket passer, he has good poise and a strong arm, but might need to work on his mobility to find success in the spread offense Kent uses. Terrance comes from southeast Michigan, where he was a three year varsity starter at football and basketball. He is gifted physically and could start right away; while Dustin will push to be Finley's back-up in '13.

Going into the off-season, Kent had 18 players that had committed in the season. They were able to add only three more players in the off-season. The highest rated being two-star safety Henry Burton. Burton could play corner or safety and could push for playing, at least on special teams this season. Kent also added two one-star players: shifty and a possibly defensive player, Brian Covington played running back at high school and wants to play on offense at Kent State as well. The other, outside linebacker Bruce Muhammad gives the team needed depth and a tackling machine and ball hawk that might night have the physicality to play right away.

A balanced class, it consists of 12 defensive players, 8 offensive and one special teams player. Still defensive heavy, as Paul Haynes will get to work with a unit that will feature mostly underclassmen. While the class could have immediate starters and impact players, it is still considered a poor recruiting class by conference and national standards.

While the team still struggles on the recruiting front, most of the issues are losing players to local schools like Bowling Green and Akron. Al of that could change if the team can break from its historical woes and finally put together a winning season.
