I posted in the Ravens projections thread about Flacco and the concerns I have with him- locking onto receivers, prove he can win in the playoffs and develop his leadership on the offense. In addition, I really think that both his future in Baltimore and that of Cam Cameron are intertwined.

In addition, I bought the Sporting News pro football magazine to read while on vacation last week, and here is what Mike Preston from the Baltimore Sun had to say about Flacco.

But there are still a lot of questions surrounding Flacco. He struggles with touch on long passes. His delivery is sometimes slow and methodical. He still locks too much on a receiver and there remain concerns about consistency and whether he can make big league throws over the middle in tight windows. And, most importantly, can he develop leadership?

On the flip side, the Atlanta Falcons article read the following:

The knock on Ryan is that he can't throw the long ball.........the Falcons would like to build on their no-huddle attack. Mularkey only unleashed Ryan once last year - against Baltimore - to run the attack for the full game. By adding some speed at running back and wide receiver, the Falcons are hoping Ryan is ready to handle a more open attack.

There seem to be a whole lot more negatives with Flacco than they do for Ryan. That's what I see as an objective viewer, not having allegiance to either team. The problems with Flacco are mostly mechanical and if I recall, were concerns coming out of college. With those issues, that plays into his consistency issues and why he hasn't taken a larger role in leading the offense.

Thats not to mean that he won't be a great quarterback in the league. But Baltimore really needs him to step up this season and be "the guy." They have the weapons to help him out for sure.

Ya i feel like Ryan is a more polished QB than Flacco. Flacco being more athletic and having a bigger arm makes for more exciting plays, but if i needed to pick one of them to make 1 throw, it'd be Ryan.

You're a fuckin idiot if you think winning in the playoffs doesn't matter when the other guy has proven jack shit in the playoffs.

The perceptions of these guys are fascinating. Thomas posted that he has concerns about Flacco "proving he can win in the playoffs" and he's 4-3. No such comments are made about Ryan and he's 0-2.

Ryan could probably lose in the playoffs again this year, but as long as he throws for 4000 yards and 30 TD's people will still be on his nuts. Meanwhile Flacco could have another good year statistically, win a playoff game, but if he loses to the Steelers again, Baltimore fans are going to hate him.

I like Flacco better. I think he is in a tougher position in a way compared to Ryan. He faces tougher defenses with less surrounding talent, and it seems like the Ravens usually pass in passing situations only. Flacco might not be asked to lead his team like Ryan, but he's expected to make plays in tough situations. I think Flacco is the better playmaker, whereas Ryan is more consistent. Ryan is better than Flacco when everything is going well, but Flacco faces adversity better, IMO.

And the Ravens D doesn't have anything to do with Flacco carving up Kansas City in the playoffs last year.

His QB rating was 45 points higher than Ryan's average rating from his two playoff appearances. 45 points higher...

Pretty accurate assessment. I think Ryan is probably the better of the two as a "coach on the field" type of QB who can lead his team, command the huddle, and make the correct read/audible at the right time, but physically it's hard to deny Flacco's size and arm strength.
