Meltzer gives Cena/Punk 5-stars

So then I asked him about these DG matches with the crazy chained together spots, because there is no fucking way that some of that stuff can be improvised. He said stuff lke that has to be rehersed either before the show or in the back, plus he said he's pretty sure all of those DG guys know english.

I don't know what that has to do with anything, I just remembered it and thought I you guys would find it interesting.

It is more amazing than the other "sports" since these guys are legit taking their lives and putting them in the hands of guys who may not speak/understand the same language.

Such as when Jack Evans, Waltman, etc. went to Mexico and worked for a while. Obviously they have guys in management who can speak English but I doubt all the workers can.

Same when guys like Chris Hero work tours (or use to at least) in Japan.
 
The best match I ever seen was Kobashi vs Misawa, someone lent me a tape of Japanese stuff and I thought it was great

They beat the crap out of each other and nailed everything, not sure what year, but they looked close to there primes, maybe Kobashi a little older? Not sure if it would still look that good, but this was a good 8 to 10 years ago maybe when I seen it, I think Benoit was on it and he was masked, Pegasus Kid or something, and against Jericho, so I'm guessing it was old stuff

Don't know if it was the same event or just a compilation tape, could have been new japan or all japan

That was a comp tape for sure, because Misawa & Kobashi would have been in All Japan, while Benoit (as Pegasus) worked for New Japan. I'm guessing it was one of those old Bob Barnett comps that used to flaot around during that era.

The match you are talking about is probably one of these:

The second two are universal, undisputed 5-star matches and both easily won MOTY in every credible poll. The 10/31/98 match is considered by a lot of people to be the best match of all time.

The 1/20/97 match is not "offically" a 5-star match but just about everybody considers it one. Meltzer doesnt give it the official rating but strongly impled it was at that level. It doesnt matter, because pretty much everyone else on earth thinks its good enough.

All three have significant finishes that add to the greatness of the match. I'm going to post everything these guys did against each other that was 5-star in my next post if anyone is interested in watching it all in order spoiler free.

So I finally got around to Best in the World (really good BTW) and I agree, Edwards/Richards > Punk/Cena. Punk/Cena definitely had a better buildup and a better atmosphere, but the in-ring work of the American Wolves was absolutely stellar and there was genuine emotion behind it all. Edwards really stole the show in my opinion.

When Eddie had his leg caught in the rope shouted "DO IT!" to a hesitant Davey, that bit got to me a bit.

Then again, I'm a huge American Wolves fan, so I was more emotionally involved in their match than I was with Cena/Punk.

In-ring work...yes, for sure. There were some crazy sequences that had me on the edge of my seat and cringing.

The exterior stuff...story, crowd, etc. I'd give it to Punk-Cena. I just didn't feel the emotion in the match that should have been there with Eddie-Davey. There were flashes (like during the dragon screw leg whip into the rope), but not enough for me to really feel it. Probably the only knock I could possibly have on the match. I liked the story leading up to, just fell a little flat for me in-ring.

Davey Richards v. Eddie Edwards @ Best in the World 2011 -> 4 1/2 ~ 4 3/4...it was really good, just missed that higher level story telling in the ring. I loved the in-ring work. I loved the story leading up to it. They got the ending right.

CM Punk v. John Cena @ Money in the Bank 2011 -> 4 3/4 ~ 5...Its a high end WWE match that should be in the canon for a long time. The in-ring stuff not nearly as good as what ROH had to offer, but the story leading up was just as good and I felt the crowd and result put it over the top, for me. Maybe its because I'm not used to the WWE really delivering on a program and match like they did here that puts it over the top...all I know is that I really enjoyed it and knew I was watching something special as soon as Punk's music hit. Was just one of those things. One thing that brings this match down is the awful commentary, but I can't dock that from the actual match.

Just a note...I'm much more liberal with my grading than you are. I'm not a stickler giving out the fifth star. Also in this thread, the Joe-Kenta match is a 5 with ease. Love the subtle story telling and edge of your seat action. You don't even need commentary to know what is going on. Steamboat-Flair is an easy 5. I am convinced that Steamboat and Flair could get in a ring today and give you a 4. They just had ridiculous chemistry and back when they were in their primes, combining everything, they really could go in the ring. The DG six-man is more like a 4. Just a cap to how much I enjoy those types of matches. Purely preference though. Probably of the best of that genre of matches though if that means anything. If I'm watching flippy bastards do flippy shit, I'm more inclined to enjoy the early to mid 90's American "lightweight" and "cruiserweight" styles and even some American-influenced lucha styles if you want to know which type of work I prefer from a similar genre.
