Barrett's slow start earns him trip to Triple-A

TORONTO, ON (AP) -- Michael Barrett went into Spring Training this year expecting to be a Las Vegas 51 on Opening Day. Instead, after a terrific spring in which he batted .335 with 5 home runs and 17 RBIs, Barrett made the big club. Now, three months later, he's going to the place he thought he'd be going.

The Blue Jays announced on Thursday night that they had sent down the former Chicago Cub and San Diego Padre to their Triple-A affiliate after a terrible first two and a half months for the slugger. The seven year pro batted .242 with no homers and only 5 RBIs while serving as Rod Barajas' backup.

"I wasn't myself and I totally understand this move, I just hope I can get another chance down the road." Barrett said at Pearson Airport in Toronto.

To replace the hole filled by Barrett, the Jays called up slick hitting 35 year old catcher Raul Chavez, a former Pittsburgh Pirate. In 67 games with the 51's Chavez hit .287 with 3 home runs and 30 RBIs while sharing the starting job with prospect Curtis Thigpen. He was brought in during the offseason to mentor the plethora of young catching prospects the Jays have at their dispossal.

"Raul is a great guy and a terrific baseball player and he'll be a great addition to the Jays." Thigpen said of his mentor.

The Blue Jays play game two of a three game series versus the Philadelphia Phillies Saturday, when Jesse Litsch takes the hill against Jamie Moyer.

PHILADELPHIA, PA-- After winning the World Series last year, the Phillies have started 2009 off cold. They are six games back off the division leading Mets in the NL East and on Tuesday, lost one of their best players for the rest of the season when star second basemen Chase Utley broke his leg diving for a ball during a game versus the Boston Red Sox.

Utley had been hitting .257 with 7 home runs and 41 RBIs for the Champs and will not be back until late Spetember. Utley's replacements will be 37 year old utility man Eric Bruntlett and the player who was called up to fill his spot, 26 year old Brad Harman.

"Losing Chase is definetely tough since he's one of our main guys here but hopefully Brad and Eric can step up and perform in his stead." Manager Charlie Manuel said of the loss.
