SAN FRANCISCO, CA-- J.J. Putz' terrible start to the season has been rewarded by the New York Mets with a trade to the San Francisco Giants.

The Mets, trying to avoid another late September collapse from their bullpen, sent the struggling right hander to the Giants (along with prospect Francisco Pena) for RP Bob Howry and LF Fred Lewis.

Putz had a 0-4 record with a 6.43 ERA in 21 apperances thru Thursday and reportedly got into a shoving match with Manager Jerry Manuel last month. He is expected to be used primarily as a setup man to Giants closer Brian Wilson while trying to keep the 34-34 Giants in the Wildcard race.

"It's dissapointing to be gone so soon but maybe a move back to the West Coast is what I needed to get back to my old self." The former Seattle Mariner said of the move back to the West Coast.

After the move, the Giants called up former St.Louis Cardinals slugger Josh Phelps to fill the hole Lewis left in Left Field. He is expected to be used as a utility player and platoon with prospect Emanuel Burriss.
