Richmond's success surprising some

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- A fact not widely known about the best starting pitcher on the Toronto Blue Jays this season, is this:

He isn't Roy Halladay.

Instead, Halladay has been elipsed by a quiet 29 year old from North Vancoucer, British Columbia who has gone 6-3 with a blistering 2.99 ERA this season, going deep into many of his starts.

Scott Richmond made his major league debut July 30 of last season when he went 5.1 innings and surrendered third runs against the eventual World Series runner up, Tampa Bay Rays. He would log six more starts last season finished 1-3 with a 4.48 ERA and went into Spring Training hoping for a Triple-A job.

"To tell the truth, I thought I didn't have a good shot at make the rotation so I figured I should just try my best to make the Triple-A team." Richmond said.

Luckily for Richmond, rotation regulars Dustin McGowan and Shawn Marcum each had Tommy John surgery in the offseason which will force each pitcher to miss the entire year. If it had not been for this strange occurance of two middle of the rotation starters having the same surgery, the same year, Richmond may still be toiling in Triple or maybe Double-A. Going into camp, his main competitors were Casey Janssen, Matt Clement, Brian Burres and rookie phenom Ricky Romero but says Jays manager Cito Gaston, the first time he threw, he was a lock for the team.

"Last year Rich had a little waver in his breaking balls and his fastballs were slow, I even told Brad [Arnsberg, Jays pitching coach] that I doubted he'd be a major league pitcher but he plain and simple came into Spring Training and blew us away."

Richmond has blown hitters away as well -- in addition to his 6-3 record he has 56 strikouts -- and Red Sox third basemen Mike Lowell recently called him the Jays' best pitcher. Not an ideal mention when you have a Cy Young winner such as Halladay on the team.

"You know, I just try to do my best everytime. It's not a competition for me, I'm just happy to be here." Richmond said after hearing of Lowell's comments.

After eight years of waiting and countless hours tuning his game, Scott Richmond is here and with the way he's playing now, it's probable he will be here for a very long time.
