Jays set major league records for consecutive complete games

BOSTON, MA (AP) -- Making history is a funny thing. You can dream about doing it all your life and think about what you will do when that shining moment comes but when, or if, that day does come your struck with the commonality that, you just do not know how to celebrate this special occurance.

Such was the case of the Terrible Three of the Toronto Blue Jays also known as Brian Burres, Scott Richmond and Roy Halladay. After the latter completed the trifecta the formers had began, Halladay did what he always does after a game, win or loss.

"I just went into the clubhouse and stretched out, didn't want to get any elbow tightness." He smiled at reporters yesterday in Boston.

In fact, all three of the trio had underwhelming finales to a complete success on the mound versus the Tampa Rays. Burres went home and watching Die Hard 2, "Still my favorite movie," and Richmond went out for dinner with catchers Rod Barajas, Curtis Thigpen and Michael Barrett, "Just thanking them for everything."

The complete games marked the first time in major league history three had been thrown consecutively on three nights against the same team after Burres went nine in a 10-2 win on Monday, Richmond went the distance in a 2-1 victory Tuesday and the staff ace Halladay completed the trifecta Wednesday in a 2-0 win. Overall the trio left the Rays with a .190 batting average for the series and have lots of memories from it.

"Definetely the best Monday of my life," Burres said, "I still can remember every pitch I threw."

However, while it does feel good to set records like this the Jays know that they are unlikely to get pitching like this all season and their offense needs to turn on the juice if they want to elipse the Yankees for the AL Wildcard spot.

"Obviously we're happy about the success we had these past few days but now we need to turn the page and focus on the Sox." Manager Cito Gaston said.

Those Sox are the same Sox that lead the AL East and swept the Jays last week which would start a 6 game Jays losing streak. For the sake of their playoff hopes they cannot allow the same to happen this week.

Jays make tons of changes after loss to Sox

BOSTON, MA (AP) -- One day after one of the Toronto Blue Jays' toughest losses of the season changes from the top came with fury after the 8-7 walkoff loss the Jays suffered through last night.

In the biggest move of the season, the Jays sent down closer B.J. Ryan to Triple-A Las Vegas after his tenth blown save of the season last night, a game many believe will be his last as a Toronto Blue Jay. Taking Ryan's job is left handed reliever Scott Downs who lasted only 3 and two thirds innings last night versus the Boston Red Sox in his 5th start this season.

"I'm excited to be getting a chance at closer which is more natural to me than being part of the rotation and hopefully I can save out some ballgames for us." A confident Downs said yesterday.

Taking Downs' spot in the rotation is a familiar face as Orange, California native Casy Janssen was called up to take the role behind ace Roy Halladay. Janssen started the year as the fourth Jays starter but after 5 starts he had earned a 1-2 record coupled with a 7.66 ERA. Sent down to Triple-A Las Vegas, Janssen caught on fire going 7-0 with a 1.98 ERA and according to manager Cito Gaston was just too good to pass up.

"Honestly, we were looking at calling up Ricky Romero but when we saw Casey's numbers it was just too good to pass up." The manager said.

The Jays also called up 35 year old lefty Marty McCleary who had been the closer in Triple-A and had compiled a 1.04 ERA with 9 saves in Triple-A. He replaces T.J. Beam who suffered an injured sternum against the Sox.

The Jays play game two of a three game set Saturday in Boston.
