Wells' loss in power mystifing to many

TORONTO, ON (AP) -- Vernon Wells is hitting.

It's 3 in the afternoon and the Toronto Blue Jays 'slugger' is nearly halfway done hitting the usual 1000 balls he hits every day before a game. Of those 1000, the slugger sends nearly half of them out of the park something he wishes he could continue in the real games.

Wells is in a cold slump right now, hitting .216 in his past 100 at bats with zero home runs and one RBI and is very close to relinquishing his spot in the order to Lyle Overbay or Mark Sobolewski, both hot hitters of late.

"It's real tough man especially after my start but I'm just going to persevere and hopefully I can get that stroke I know is there back." A wishful Wells said during batting practice before last night's game against the Red Sox, a game in which as usual he struggled, going 1-4.

In fact, Wells, normally a slow starter, burst out of the gates hitting .389 with 7 home runs and 24 RBIs in the month of April and was garnering MVP consideration before his considerable power drop in which he has matched his April home run total in 100 more games. In fact, even newly acquired slugger Adrian Beltre had been struggling before his two home run outburst against the Red Sox yesterday while bottom of the order sparkplugs Marco Scutaro and Aaron Hill had been thriving.

"I don't know what it is, maybe it's intimidating, but whenever we insert a new guy into that third or fourth spot in the order he magically stops hitting, we have so much confidence in Vernon that we aren't worried, it's just a cold spell that everyone goes through, you can't expect a guy like him to hit .400 realistically." Jays manager Cito Gaston said of the slugger.

After the sweep at the hands of the Sox, the Jays need Wells more than ever as the upcoming series against the Los Angeles Angels could ultimately determine if the Jays can make the playoffs as a wildcard but until then Vernon Wells will keep on hitting until he regains that stroke he so misses.

Cecil sent down as Burres back in Jays uniform

TORONTO, ON (AP) -- A day after having the worst performance of his young career, Brett Cecil is back where it all began after being sent down by Blue Jays management to Triple-A Las Vegas in favor of the more experienced Brian Burres.

Cecil had been 2-0 with a 4.44 ERA in 5 starts with the big club, which was a long enough apperance to count as his rookie season. He is expected to be the ace in Las Vegas' rotation as they desperately try to make the Triple-A playoffs.

"Obviously I'm dissapointed to be sent down but I'm still young and hopefully I can get back up here soon." An optimistic Cecil said yesterday at the post game press conference.

Burres, who had been called up earlier in the season, was sent down to Las Vegas in early July after suffering a bout of shoulder stiffness during a game against the Baltimore Orioles. Pitching in Las Vegas, Burres had accumilated a 7-3 record with a 2.20 ERA in Triple-A while keeping a 3-2 record with a 3.69 ERA during his short stint in the majors.

"I'm excited to be coming back up and hopefully I can help this team get back in the playoff hunt." The fomer Baltimore Orioles hurler said yesterday.

The Blue Jays complete a three game series today against the Los Angeles Angels when Joe Saunders takes on David Purcey. Burres is expected to make his first start back against the Oakland Athletics Monday.
