The Chavez experiment over as Thigpen called up

TAMPA, FL (AP) -- A day after having his average drop to a terrible .086, Raul Chavez was heading for another drop, this one to Triple-A Las Vegas.

The 36 year old catcher, called up in June to replace struggling backup Michael Barrett, had been hitting an extremely underwhelming .086 with only 3 hits in 35 at-bats while serving as a situational backup to starter Rod Barajas.

"It's no secret that Raul wasn't his greatest but we expect big things from Curtis." Jays G.M. J.P. Riccardi said.

The Curtis Riccardi speaks of is Thigpen, the Jays' brightest young catching prospect who has torn up Triple-A this season. He leads all Triple-A catchers (including O's superstud Matt Wieters) in hitting, home runs and RBIs with .304, 7 and 44 while playing 3 different positions. Thigpen is expected to gain the role Chavez lost and he says he is ready for it, "I'm what the third different backup to Barajas they've had this year?" Thigpen asked the media before boarding a plane to meet his new 'mates in Tampa, "I'll also be the last they'll have to call up."

Jays picking a bad time to slump

TAMPA, FL (AP) -- If every month could be July, it would make a lot of people pleased. Nice weather, kids are out of school and for the Toronto Blue Jays, July seems to be the month where everything goes right.

In July of this year, the smoking Jays had two seven game win streaks in the month to finish with a whooping 19-5 record, with four of those losses coming to the division rival New York Yankees, three on walk off hits.

Sadly, to the Jays chagrin, the calender turns over once every 30 or 31 days (or 28 if in a Leap Year) and now, in August, the Jays have matched their loss total for the enitre month of July in their first 9 games this month. All this after aquiring sluger Adrian Beltre from the hapless Seattle Mariners for spare parts. What once was a one game lead in the wildcard as dropped to a four game hole between the leading Yankees and the Jays. Speaking of the Yankees, the Bronx Bombers have dealt another three losses to the Jays this month as well.

July Jubilance to August Angst in one week.

This month is perhaps the most crucial for the Jays, as 20 of the teams 23 games this month are against division opponents including 10 against the hated Yankees. That hot streak they had in July would have been much better suited to a good run in August, known as the most pivotal month of the campaign.

"I think that we did have our surge a bit early for our liking this year but I think that the talent on this team is good enough to earn a Wildcard spot." Jays G.M. J.P. Riccardi said of the team's hopes.

To do that of course, would be to beat the hated Yankees, something they've had trouble doing this year. In 13 matchups with the Bombers, the Jays have won only four games while losing nine, including six at home. In addition to that, the Jays play the Yankees and division leading Red Sox a combined 27 more times, which does not bode well for a team trying to make a playoff.

Other wildcard contenders, such as the Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers have much easier roads then the Jays, partly because of the divisions they play in and partly due to the fact they've stayed relatively injury free all season.

The Jays, however, have lost regulars Jim Edmonds, John McDonald, Dustin McGowan and Shawn Marcum to injuries for the rest of the season which puts them at a disadvantage.

Will this disadvantage play a big role as September gets closer and closer? We'll have to wait and see.

Jays suffer another setback as Barajas injured

TAMPA, FL (AP) -- Rod Barajas went 4-4 with a home run and 3 RBIs in the Toronto Blue Jays' 7-4 victory over the Tampa Rays Saturday but it came with a price. Sliding into second for a double, Barajas came up lame, clutching his leg and had to be replaced by swift hitting prospect Curtis Thigpen, who while good, is no Rod Barajas.

The diagnosis was comparably grim. A MCL Sprain landed the All Star on the 15 day DL which will keep him out until mid September. He had been hitting .256 with 16 home runs and 61 RBIs while starting for the Jays this season.

"It sucks because Roddy is a terrific ball player but we have confidence in Curtis and Mike." Jays All Star centerfielder Vernon Wells who himself had been nursing an injury.

Barajas roster replacement is former Chicago Cub Michael Barrett, best known for getting into a well publicized fight with Cubs' ace Carlos Zambrano. Barrett, who started the season as Barajas' backup, had been sent down in June after playing underwhelmingly in the backup role, batting .242 with no home runs and 5 RBIs in his brief stint in the majors. However, Barrett is confident that this time will be different.

"I told you guys that if I got another chance I would not let the Jays down and look what happens two months later." A confident Barrett said in Tampa last night. He ahd been batting .261 with 2 home runs and 14 RBIs in Triple-A Las Vegas thru Sunday.

Thigpen is expected to start Sunday's series finale versus the Rays.
