LOS ANGELES, CA (AP) -- Manny Ramirez was having a dream season.

Hitting .370 with 40 home runs and 120 RBIs with his Dodgers comfortably in first place, things were good in Mannywood. That is until a stolen base turned the Dodgers' prospects upside down.

Having already lost stars Rafael Furcal and Clayton Kershaw to injuries last week, the Dodgers were in a strange position which got even stranger when, sliding into second base, Manny came up lame clutching his hip.

Mannywood was silent.

The prognosis was an inflamed hip which will keep the superstar out of the lineup until Mid-September, a time which the Dodgers had hoped to have clinched the division by then.

"It's tough but we believe in the other guys back there and we think this won't effect us too much." Dodgers manager Joe Torre said of the injury.

All of L.A. hopes so.

Harper declares for 2010 MLB Draft

SEATTLE, WA (AP) -- Amid a grim season in which they are overwhelmingly the worst team in baseball, there is hope on the horizon for the Seattle Mariners by the name of Bryce Harper.

The 16 year old from Las Vegas was subject to a Sports Illustrated cover earlier this year with the heading 'The Chosen One'. Indeed, many major league scouts leave Harper's games drooling at the catcher's potential.

"The kid can throw guys out from his knees, throw nearly 100 and hit 550 plus home runs," One major league scout said, "I wouldn't be surprised if he came up with the cure to cancer."

In fact, Harper is so good that his parents want him to forgoe his final two years of high school and attend a junior college in order to be eligible for the 2010 MLB Draft, one in which he will be the overwhelming pick for whoever ends up with the number one pick (Seattle had seven more losses than the next worst team at week's end).

Harper will attend Valdalso Community College in Valdaso, California but surprisingly will not be on the baseball team there.

"With Bryce finishing high school after his sophomore year we think it's best if he focuses more on his studies in the year he's going to be there." Harper's mother Mary said about the decision.

The 6'4", 205 pound Harper has been labeled baseball's LeBron, a reference to NBA superstar LeBron James and the hype that followed him out of high school. In a 2008 game, Harper was rumored to have hit a 600 foot shot while being just 15 at the time. He has also hit as high as 99 on the gun with his fastball and when playing catcher, regularly throws runners out from his knees.

"He is a scouts dream, a tall kid that can do everything, I honestly think he could be a part time starting pitcher in the NL while batting in the lineup on days he's not pitching, the team that gets him will contend almost immediately." The scout said.

With the fortunes the Mariners have had this season, they are hoping Harper lands square in their laps.
