Minor League season draws to a close as Fisher Cats celebrate playoff berth

MANCHESTER, NH (AP) -- It's not easy being a minor league baseball manager but according to Gary Cathcart he has the best job in the world.

"What's better than watching a bunch of future major league stars playing the sport you love?" The 37 year old New Hampshire Fisher Cats manager said after his team clinched a playoff berth after a 13-7 win over the Binghamton Mets, the team they will play in the first round of the Eastern League playoffs starting Thursday.

Indeed, on the way to finishing a franchise best 80-62 and tops in the Eastern League, Cathcart helped develop future major leaguers including Mark Sobolewski, Russ Adams and Brett Cecil to name a few rookies who broke through the ranks this year with the big club. Among the players on his team, five are among the top seven prospects in the Jays system with the only two not in New Hampshire are Travis Snider, with the Jays, and Cecil, most likely being sent down to help the Fisher Cats in the playoffs.

"I'd love to move up the ranks a bit and make it [to the majors] but I'm perfectly happy in Manchester helping a bunch of young guys develop and hopefully make our playoffs." Cathcart says.

Of course Cathcart's team did make the playoffs and will be up against the Mets, the affiliate of the major league Mets in a five game series starting Thursday in Manchester.

"The guys are definetely excited for it to start and we definetely want to win it," Game one starter Brad Mills said when asked about the teams series with the Mets, "We'd like to win the entire league if we can, but we'd need to contribute a lot of hard work and dedication."

On the other hand the Jays' Triple-A affiliate Las Vegas 51's finished their season 72-72 and done for the season after a dysfunctional final month in which Brian Jeroloman was dismissed from the team and manager Mike Basso publicly submitted his resignation with three games left in the year.

"It was obviously tough at the end their but we'll just have to build this organization back up next season and produce a winner." 51's General Manager Don Logan said at the team's season ending dinner.

Faced with an ever changing roster in which his stars were either injured or in Toronto and which had five catchers, Basso told Logan in front of television cameras that he would not be back the next season in a profanity laced tirade that made Sportscenter.

However, the 51's did a terrific job of handling the Jays' top prospects, primarily Snider who went into a state of depression after being sent down from the Jays in early May and proceeded to hit .332 with 15 home runs and 56 RBIs for the 51's.

"If I can say one thing about Mike it's that he cared about all of us in the locker room there no matter how much of a hardass he acted like in the media." Snider said from Toronto.

Cathcart is a prime candidate to take over Basso's job but for now he's only worried about one thing, taking his Fisher Cats to Double-A World Series.

Rosters expand as minor league seasons draw to a close

​

TORONTO, ON (AP) -- As the minor league season winds down, talented young players continue to undergoe their training regiments like they were still playing.

The reason?

On September the 8th, the day the minor league seasons end, teams call up players on their 40 man rosters to help contribute to their playoff push, or if the team is floundering, to give the young player some much needed experience.

"I think that this was a great idea by MLB. For team's that are in a tight playoff race like us they can't afford to send down a veteran to call up a kid but with this rule we can call our kids up to get some valuable experience watching the big leaguers." Toronto Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston said after his team's 5-3 win over the Minnesota Twins Monday.

The Jays have their own playoff race going on, with them being 5 and a half games out of the American League Wildcard spot, but with the expanded rosters they got to call up prospects Travis Snider, Wayne Lydon and Fabio Castro who can gain valuable experience watching the Jays go through the September struggles.

"I got called up in this situation [last year] and I learned some things from that that I will look to put to use now that I'm here again." Snider said after landing at Toronto's Pearson airport.

Along with the aformentioned threesome, the Jays also called up Joe Inglett, Marty McCleary, Justin Jackson and Jason Frasor, all who have been on the major league roster at some point this season. In fact, for McCleary and Frasor it was a short stint in Triple-A as they were sent down from Toronto on Saturday night in favor of Brian Tallet and Shawn Camp.

"It's great to be back [in Toronto]," Frasor said happily, "I think that being sent down really was a slap in the face for me and I hope I will do much better for the Jays in my second stint here."

Other teams around the majors called up young talent and future stars including the Jays' division rival Baltimore Orioles who called up wunderkind catching prospect Matt Wieters for some experience. Speaking of wunderkinds, two National League Central teams called up their respective top prospects as the Pittsburgh Pirates called up third baseman Pedro Alvarez and the St.Louis Cardinals called up center fielder Colby Rasmus.

"I'm excited for the chance and hopefully I can contribute to the team." Rasmus said in a statement.

Raburn sustains horrific injury as Edmonds leaves DL

TORONTO, ON (AP) -- Blue Jays fans all remember Jim Edmonds.

Mr. "sweet stroke" himself had signed with the struggling Toronto Blue Jays in early May and proceeded to absolutely blow Jays fans away with his power and grace with which he wielded the bat.

When everything was going great, with the Jays winning ball games by wide margins and the former Cub and Cardinal clubbing home runs, Edmonds' knee gave out on a steal attempt in a game against Baltimore. That one player that the Jays could depend on for a timely home run was gone, carried away on a stretcher by the grounds crew with narry a thumbs up for the crowd.

"I thought I was done quite honestly, I felt so terrible with myself, it wasn't just the knee, it was me." Edmonds explains quietly in the Jays' clubhouse after the team's 12-5 loss to the Minnesota Twins.

Before his injury Edmonds was batting .327 with 14 long balls and 35 RBIs in a season that people were calling the rebirth of one baseball's last, clean stars. He brought a mood to the Toronto clubhouse that was unmatched.

"He tutors the young guys, even the older guys like me go to him for help." Jays star slugger Vernon Wells says of Edmonds.

Now Edmonds is back and he has a purpose, but it isn't what you'd think.

"The young guy that just got injured, Raburn, I want to make sure he's feeling alright and I want to be there for him, I know what it's like to suffer a long term injury." Edmonds says of the 29 year old Jays utility player Ryan Raburn who tore his achilles tendon sliding into second base in last night's game and is estimated to be out for six plus months. Raburn had been batting .370 with 3 homers and 17 RBIs, eerily familiar to Edmonds' numbers at the time of his injury.

"We hope Ryan is fine but with guys like Jimmy in the clubhouse we know he'll be as comfortable as possible in rehab." Manager Cito Gaston says.

Edmonds is expected to be inserted as a situational designated hitter and is expected to start Wednesday in game three of the series with the Twins.

Another player expected to see some action this week is catcher J.P. Arencibia who along with pitcher Luis Perez was called up Tuesday from Triple-A Las Vegas for some conditioning in the majors. He is expected to compete for the backup catchers spot in Spring Training next season with incumbants Curtis Thigpen and Michael Barrett. Perez, on the other hand, comes off an impressive season in Triple-A and replaces David Purcey in the Jays rotation. After a string of bad starts, Gaston decided to move Purcey to the bullpen for the rest of the year. Perez is expected to make his first start next week against the Detroit Tigers.

"We're excited to see how the kids do as well as how Purcey does in the bullpen." Gaston said.
